You do & frankly its ridiculous & tiresome, interesting discussion going on here & yet again you are having an internet argument with someone, I've never met you & you might be a nice chap, but lordy I don't think you realise what a chump your PH persona comes across as, maybe just try not arguing with someone on here for a bit over nothing, you might even enjoy it.

Nothing like being childish and abusive when it comes to setting an example.

Hang on. I don't mean to be a**l but isn't that what you do? You can't be indignant and accuse people of doing this if you too are doing the same?

Seconded! eek

Anyway, back to the 718. I think the Boxster version looks nice in the metal, the pictures of the Cayman version less so. Not driven any variant yet but certainly not looking to replace my 987.1 or 981 with a turbo 4, however fast it goes or however nicely it may drive, while my two are still viable driving propositions.

This is even more boring than a turbo 4 pot with maximum torque from 1500 revs.

Why doesn't everybody go and try the 718 and come back with points based on the experience.

Most of you are Porsche fans and loyal to the brand

If anyone can get a 4 pot right it has got to be Porsche?

I agree with your last point - but in relation to your first point, I suspect that most of us on PH with 987s or 981s aren't particularly stirred by the current 718s, chiefly because of its engine.

I'll report back as to whether or not I'm "stirred" when I've driven one. The dealership have invited me to have a go and I'm looking forward to it. In the meantime I'm struggling on with my 981 S despite,

  • too much torque here,
  • not enough torque there,
  • over-served brakes,
  • dumb electric steering,
  • too fast in second gear,
  • tyres too grippy,
and all manner of other problems. Surely Porsche will have heard the wisdom of "PH enthusiasts" and rectified these fundamental issues?

I've had the 981 more than three years and IMO it's still a great drive! driving

Posting with some trepidation given the bloodbath on here.

I've had a manual 981s for nigh on 3 years and I absolutely love it, having had a 987s.1 and a 997s.1 and for me it's way better than both.

Back to 2013 - my purchase of 981 came down to looks and noise. Performance on the 987s was always adequate but I craved the noise of the 997 with sports exhaust and 997 cab looked a bit better than 987, more manly for lack of a better word.

(I got almost as much hairdresser abuse for the 987 Boxster as I did for my TT cab)

The new 981, though, looked absolutely wonderful and it sounded wonderful. Sold to the gentleman who clearly has no need of a hairdresser.

I haven't driven a 718 but I've read enough opinions and heard enough videos to know it sounds ....merely.....ok.

While the 718 probably moves the game on slightly dynamically and quite a bit performance wise I don't really need either of those - and although it looks more or less the same it sounds worse. (Being only "ok")

Im coming to the end of my finance package and weighing up the option to trade in the 981s for a 718s (and take a truly massive haircut in the process) and based on my reasons for buying the 981 I'm finding its a no brainer

I'm going to find the 25k for the balloon payment and buy the 981 outright.

Boxster GTS - good luck finding one!!

Hens teeth and very expensive.

Same issue - massive haircut on trade in.

My S has PSE, PASM, sports chrono, classic 20 wheels pretty much all best GTS options except third radiator and funky clear lights and badges.

That's really the key point - sure the 718 is overall a good car, but it is very much worse than the 981 in a very important way and not materially better in any ways. It is simply a worse package overall, assuming that you like throttle response, engine noise and an engine that rewards revs (i.e. a sports car engine and not a diesel motorway hack engine).

I bought my 981 Caymans for the looks, the interior but most definitely the noise. I've come from a TTS, it's a fast car but speed alone has never been the whole story for me. In it's own way the TTS is a lovely car but, from the moment I left it behind and drove away in my Cayman... I have not missed the TT for one moment. Whatever noise that F6 is making over my shoulder... whether I'm in stop start traffic, ambling along at 30 or pressing on, the TT never in anyway sounded anywhere near as good. I love that when I open the taps the drama level intensifies along with the whole involvement with the proceedings.
My mate is picking up a Cayman R from Tonbridge Porsche tomorrow... I had a look at the 718 S they have in the showroom. To my surprise it looks great in the metal. Having seen the pics I didn't expect to like it but... turbo just doesn't having any attraction for me at all. Yes it's faster, more mid range wallop which will appeal to a lot of people but I'd miss the drama of the 6. I'm not going to get into why would you not want the F6 etc.. each to their own.
I've only had the car 3 weeks but I really I feel have more than enough power, speed and performance... why would I want more? Like others here, I'll be holding onto my 981 for as long as I can get in and out of it.

I bought my 981 Boxster in Dec. No intention of changing any time soon, so for me, I have no desire to go and test drive the 718. I would rather spend the time driving the one I have, which is more than powerful, fast, agile etc etc for me thank you very much.

I don't think cmoose id being deliberately confrontational, more a case of he is passionate about a certain type of car or specific aspect of a car/system and has intricate knowledge and substantial experience to backup his viewpoint. Whilst others here chose a car or option, based on a completely set of requirements. These two views can be diametrically opposed to one another and it can be difficult to express these viewpoints, via a keyboard, without ending up in the usual PH arguments. Cmoose is a nice guy and in person doesn't, in anyway shape or form, come across in the way some of you have suggested here.

This kind of thread was always going to go one way because some are likely to spend £50large on their new pride and joy (4 banger hehe ), and others will tell them they are nuts for doing so due to x, y or z; a bit like a Manual vs PDK thread.

Peace guys hippy

Without wanting to fuel the fire, it does seem that Cmoose is always in the thick of the bust ups. Maybe as you say he's just passionate about his subject matter
