I get the feeling that regardless of the changes some people will hate the new design.

If you haven't had a test drive yet you may not be aware of another change which will no doubt deserve a thread, or maybe even a whole forum, of its own.

On the 981 there's an "A/C Off" button which lights red when pressed to show A/C is off, so by default the A/C is on.

On the 781 there's an "A/C" button so by default it's off and you have to press it to light red and switch the A/C on.

This confused me at first because I jumped to the conclusion that I'd never switched on the A/C in my 981.

Surely this is the biggest deal breaker?

funny indeed. has to be some subconscious going on in one of us here smile

the 718 is definitely edgier... look at all the horizontal lines everywhere where the 981 (especially in the rear lights) is rounded.

when i went to test drive the 718 i had it put beside the 981 so i could compare the two directly. needless to say i'm really looking forward to seeing the Cayman in the metal. i've no doubt it's goign to look even better than it does in the images that are online.

i was talking mainly about the back of the car, not so much the front. and it's not just in the rear clusters, the lines are everywhere. lines to me = edges whereas curves = ... curves.

i base my judgement on looking at the real thing side by side with the 981. even at the front the creases are sharper too but here the changes are much more subtle.

ok well we'll just have to disagree on that one. to me the rear of the 981 is more feminine and the the 718 sorted this out and now looks more masculine and aggressive.

987 looks better than both of them, anyway. Well, the Cayman does. The 987 Boxster is ugly.

I look forward to your insight into a basic 996......they are maturing into quite an attractive proposition.

I like the new styling and I like the old styling.

Wish I had the balls to get it in that blue but I'll probably play safe with Agate Grey.

Shows you how subjective it is.

If, like me, you couldn't give a stuff about newness, modern cars make increasingly little sense. More expensive, more complex, less enjoyable to drive, etc etc. I would take a 997 over a 991 at the same money, but the market gives me the better car for half as many pounds (or less).

The problem will come when we start to run out of the older cars and they become prohibitively expensive.

Weird, as I thought my 987 gen 1 Boxster looked loads nicer than my 987 gen 2 Cayman.

And my 981 Cayman looks better than both of them.......but then, I may change my opinion as the years go on....I tend to do that!!!

I agree. 996's are starting to grow on me....I wasn't a fan a few years ago.

I know what you mean. I found the 996 ugly until recently, but I am now starting to think it looks great! Maybe it now looks small enough relative to other cars to have a bit of the classic vibe. The 991 even makes my 997 look smaller than it did before there were so many of the newer car around adjusting my expectations.

Thats pretty much the air cooled market.

Indeed. If I didn't need the safety of a more modern car, I could see myself driving a much older 911 (notwithstanding the prices).

Wasn't aimed at you, point is you have to be a total knob to go on a car discussion forum and dictate to people what level of enthusiasts they are based on the engine in their car! Go home and comb your beard!
You are clearly confusing me with someone else. If you actually read what I have written you will find I am arguing that simplistic judgements on enthusiasm based upon turbo/not turbo 4/6 cylinders are misplaced. I speak as someone who has owned 2 Subarus. So which non-enthusiast are you aiming your comments?

definitely subjective, which is i guess why we have forums. if we all had the same opinions we wouldn't need them, and life would be pretty dull no doubt.

regarding newness, it's not just about the car being new for new's sake. it's the added piece of mind that you get with the full 3 year warranty, knowing also that nobody has thrashed the car to within an inch of its life (especially where sports cars are concerned) and so on.

also, all things considered, over a full 3 year ownership, the cost of a 2 or 3 year old warrantied 981 wasn't far off the cost of the 718, so for me is was a no brainer, especially as i'm a big fan of the new styling. strangely though, after not liking the 987 at all, ever, i am now starting to see the appeal smile
