Yep. The 718 project manager explicitly mentioned in an interview that widening the gap between the "entry level and rear engined cars" was one of the main goals of the 718's engine development.
How very sad, but I can see the marketing sense. Makes the 981 GT4s and Spyders seem like even more special cars than they already are. That said, either of those could remain 6-cyl or NA in future cycles...hmmm, there's a major flaw in that theory though.
you say that 99% of buyers couldn't care less what's under the bonnet, but then you say that the F4 has been introduced to make those who want 'a real porsche' get the 911. if we don't care what engine we have, how do we know the 718 isn't a real Porsche?
i lament the loss of the F6 in terms of sound but i'm not that fussed with the power delivery. and no i couldn't care less what my neighbours think. i'm getting the 718 because i simply like a beautifully styled and well built car and i've been working hard the last few years so i could get the car i wanted.
and to those that insist with the 'badge leaser' branding, some people simply appreciate good design - is that so hard to accept? i'd wager many people work very hard, make a lot of sacrifices, and have to wait a long time to have a car like the Boxster/Caymen so why try to belittle them with your name calling?

Hi Jason, I hope you don't consider my post offensive above, trust me that is not intentional. I was simply using terminology I had picked up earlier in the thread (regarding the leasers...). Anyone looking to spend the money involved in buying a 718 has done incredibly well and of course should be incredibly proud of that achievement There are a million and one reason why someone will buy or choose not to buy a 718. There is no question of it being a good design, but there are questions as to why the design has changed to be what it is today and what effect that has on the overall driving experience.you say that 99% of buyers couldn't care less what's under the bonnet, but then you say that the F4 has been introduced to make those who want 'a real porsche' get the 911. if we don't care what engine we have, how do we know the 718 isn't a real Porsche?

I'm about to drive yet but keep seeing new 718 at local London OPC. Still did not seduce me that much
Total personal opinion but I still see no point of spending 45-50k on this model really. My options so far;
1- 993
2- 997.1 or 997.2 (and keep a few grands for a possible engine failure in the future)
3- Tesla Roadster (rare, used)
all these 3 options sound much more exciting than a flat4 2.0 Turbo honestly. Again, loads of articles there, mentioning how they have struggled to develop thermal capacity of the new engine 2.0 F4, so I really would not risk 50k on the 718 yet (I might be completely wrong)
PS: If the base price, was lets say 30-35k, it would be a completely different scenario!

my post wasn't directed at you specifically, but the pigeon holing is getting a bit tiring now. not everyone who doesn't want a Boxster/Cayman specifically and solely for the engine is loaded, has 50k laying around and can't wait to blow it on the first car that they see with a badge on it.i'm sure there are people like that, but i reckon they're even rarer than you 'driving enthusiasts'
back on topic, those that have ordered a 718, what rims did you go with, and what colours (body and wheels) have you gone for. anyone ordered a Cayman yet?
They had two 718 Cayman's at PEC yesterday. A static one (in pics above) and another one (also Miami Blue) that was wheeled out from where it was hiding for an hour of video/photography work around the track while we had lunch. Look out for the video on the Porsche YouTube channel soon we were told.
None of the 718s at PEC had the PSE (as it's not officially available yet) but apparently the 'video' Cayman did have it. Wasn't told this until after it had been hidden away again! Didn't hear it as we were busy having lunch!

The 718 styling tweaks suit the Cayman more than the Boxster
Like I said in my earlier write-up, I do feel that they've softened the angular aggression of the car. Particularly, it no longer looks (to me) as if it was intended to look this way from the start, with various addenda and over-wrought detailing muddying the original design for the sake of it. I can accept that the Cayman looks better than the Boxster, but they both look worse than their predecessors, particualrly bereft of the LED lights that attempt to impart a 'techno' look to the front. Grey with Boxster S wheels.i'm sure there are people like that, but i reckon they're even rarer than you 'driving enthusiasts'

as it is i'm going for the grey too, but am still in time to change and i wonder if Agate grey is gonna be a bit too popular? then again there aren't that many colours that appeal to me other than the white but that's in a similar situation to the grey. i have been seriously considering Miami Blue but i'm pretty sure i'd get tired of it once the novelty wears off.
i've gone for the Carrera Sports wheels (same as in the photos above) but in gloss black. was considering the Carrera S but again, they've been so popular with the 981 and i just fancied something different. not a fan of the Turbo wheels on the Cayman but those RS Spyder wheels on that blue 911 in the pics seem great but aren't available on the Cayman.
will make a final decision on the wheels once they call me in to see them in person.
