I should have added to clarify for you the £1m figures for long term average earners who bought in the 70s I could see easily happening in London and surrounding areas! but not where I live YET!

In the road I gave as an example, typical professions would have been dustman, postman, domestic cleaner, maybe a couple of black cab drivers at the higher end. A lot of the same people were still living there up until recently and have now (sensibly) cashed in.
and many of those end up buying where I live and pushing our house prices higher and buy a merc.and or range rover with the spare cash!
now that we have gone full circle can we stay on topic or does cmoose want the last word;)

all your figures are laughable and it's an amusing read talking , £700k £800k figures, even £500k

So people think this is the ave person !!

back in the real world where my house is below the Average UK house price of £282k !!

But I still own my GT4 out right it's very doable.

now get back to outlandish dream figures of £800k net worth ave people lol

Go on right move for the South East it's madness here!
Prove I ain't talking ball this an average house in average street not in London and the first I come across although 4 bed it still would have been what an average earner would have bought in the 70s,80s and even early 90s
A 3 bed semi in same street is circa £450k
And here is your £282k average http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...
These are not London prices
Sorry to everyone else for carrying on but I don't like to be accused of ball!

And I will be keen to hear what you think smile

I don't believe you can ever say never(to anything). I was not a Porsche fan. The 911 the engine's in the wrong place and insulted the engineer in me and the 986/7 Boxster was just ugly. Then one evening I watched James May review the Boxster Spyder and I thought 'Now there is a car I really like. Shame I'll never be able to afford one, on my ave. salary' smile

A few years later and by the magic of PCP, Man Maths and eating just Beans on Toast I was driving away from a OPC in a two year old Guards Red Spyder. Three years later and I now have a 981 Spyder and can't think of any other car I would rather have.

My point is: from Porsche cynic to lover because of one version of a model of car. I was sold on the philosophy of the Spyder not the specification or the flat six so I'm not going to say that Porsche wont bring out a version of the 718 that will blow me away.

Sorry to go all off topic I don't normally but I do like to defend myself when people who don't know me accuse me of being a liar when i say am average joe and that I make up property prices where i live which would have been cheap accomodation in the past that many the average worker in this area would have bought and perhaps still live in!

Jolly good.

Be great to hear your thoughts.

Perhaps start a new topic and kindly request the usual suspects not to bore us for the 100th time about how they don't like flat 4 turbos....it really is getting rather silly now.

This is what I was trying to get across before it all went Pete tong I think you will see new porsche buyers coming to the 718 perhaps coming from a turbo hatch or like and if the press start spouting as quick as gt4 around the ring then there will be some who will buy into that which makes me wonder did porsche bring the gt4/ spyder out so on paper the 718 didn't look like a backwards step which does make me also wonder that the next gt4/spyder will be turbo before the hybrids!

Eh? What's the GT4 got to do with the 718? Different generation of Cayman. Completely different proposition, too.

The gt4 was/ is the fastest Cayman/ boxster which is held in high regard hence a lot of demand and media interest then porsche produce a standard model in the same platform but with a much smaller engine capeable of similar performance .
Good marketing by porsche?

I think a lot of us came to Porsche via a similar route. I had that 911 turbo athena poster as a kid but didnt really get it. The car is all wrong and a bit silly.

And then you drive one and you still think its totally alien and stupid. Its all very quaint and outdated.

And then you drive one a little bit more and.....HANG ON A MINUTE!

And then nothing else will do.

Certainly good marketing to make the 718 S very fast. I still don't see what that has to do with the decision to bring out the GT4.

Ever since the arrival of the Cayman in 2005 it was held back witha smaller engine to the 911 , I for one hoped withthe arrival of the caymanR this would be addressed but sadly it was more Gts than R, then at the end of 981 production the gt4 arrives with a 911 engine at last to rave press reviews and a frenzied demand why did it take 11 years and why then!
Gt cars help sell lesser more available models even when they don't have the same engine and more so when the lesser more available model is as quick!

OP thanks for the honest review. Personally I think the 981 Boxster S is one of the best all round sports car out there, with the GTS spec being near perfect. For me the character of the engine, along with the exhaust noise is absolutely key to the relative enjoyment of the car , thus I wouldn't buy a 981 without PSE.

From the videos, reviews and OP's own review, personally I wouldn't go near a 718 purely down to the engine and the "fart in a shoebox" soundtrack.

I'm sure Porsche will still sell tons of 718's , but for the true sports car enthusiast I can see some either sticking to the older models, or trying out Jag F Types for a slightly more GT style car, or if they want a faster , more hardcore sports car, the Lotus Exige 350 , both of which still have wonderful 6 cylinder options.

Be interesting to see how prices hold on the 981 GTS models moving forward, as that's where my money would be if I wanted a Coxster.

The thing people miss about the noise issue is that the real pull of the Cayman and Boxster is the induction noise. They sound far better than a 911 in that respect. You simply lose all of that if you go turbo and are left with farty exhaust sounds at best.

The 4 cylinder isn't going to attract buyers Imo. Re hot hatch drivers- with a few extras it's an expensive car.
To the average driver who fancies a Porsche it probably won't put them off too much. If I had a hot hatch, the opposite would apply, a 6 cylinder would make me stretch up, now I'd think why bother? Just get an mx5 if I wanted a roadster.

They built a prototype of the original Cayman with the then GT3 engine in it, there have been pictures of it in the various behind the scenes article/vids of Porsche "secret warehouse"
