So that time has come, a little quicker than I'd of liked for some new tyres for my cayman s

Have Michelin pilot sports N2's on at the moment. But nearly 8000 miles into ownership the rears have just alarmingly hit 2.3mm

So just looking on recommendations. The car is basically used for a-b journeys. Never tracked and hardly any fast road use. Blasphemy I'm sure.

Tyres do need to be N rated thou. Due to warranty.
Do I stick with the pilot sports or change to Bridgestone's contis or even good years? Ideally just looking for a more hardwaring tyre. Especially for the rear. Fronts are on 4.6 and 4.9 so plenty of life.

Thanks.

I used to have a Cayman. As I remember it the Michelins were better, much quieter...

Out of those, I would have thought the Michelins last the longest - which version of Pilot Sport? I assume 2?

I don't mean the version of N-rating.

Oh I'm not sure on version, I've not noticed anything other than pilot sport on their. Will have to check later.
As the prices are only small differences, illProbably just stick to the tried and tested.

Sounds like normal rear tyre wear to me and can't see you doing much better with other tyres. In fact, in my experience the pilot sport 2 last longer than most other tyres.

If you try something else are you thinking of just changing the rears and keeping the pilot sport 2s on the front? If so, I personally wouldn't.

987 or 981?
Tyre sizes?

See if the new PS4s are available in your sizes...

See: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/What-is-happe...

and: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Michelin-Pilo...

Otherwise Goodyear F1 A2 are good and should last well (based on just 1mm wear on my TTS over 10k miles!).

I like the PS2. Wears well for me, currently done 7,000 on the rears and have circa 6mm of tread left. I have had my first tyre bulge of 20 years but I think that's more to do with a 235/35 profile on the front than anything to do with the specific tyre brand.

I've got Pirelli P Zeros on my Boxster that are coming to an end. I've found them pretty good to be honest and the rears have lasted about 12000 miles. For those that have run them and other tyres, how do they compare? Would I find a big difference if I swapped them all over to the Michelins for instance?

Depends what you are looking for. The P Zero's are among the hardest wearing but also one of the noisiest. They also give less grip than Michelins or Goodyears.

Yes, to maintain Porsche warranty you have to have the same make, type and N rating of tyres all round. So you really don't have an option of anything but replacing your rears with some more PS2 N2s

I'd like a bit more grip to be honest as I do relatively few miles per year. Appears to be out of my hands anyhow. Super Sports not available in 265/35 20" with a N0 rating according to the Michelin site, so I guess it'll be a new set of P Zeros frown

How about PS2's. Better than P Zeros imo.

Nope, not available at all as a 20" tyre in the required width / profile, should have stuck to 19", much more choice there it seems

Choice appears to Pirelli P Zero, Michelin Sport Cup 2, Goodyear F1 Eagle Asymmetric 2 or Dunlop SP Sport Maxx Race according to Blackcircles.com although I suspect that Cup and Race are too compromised for day to day driving and weather conditions

I just went from PZero to Super Sports and they are an obvious improvement. Really didn't rate the Pzero - if you can't fit PSS I would go PS2.

Given that choice I would go for the Goodyears for day to day use.

My 996 had P Zeroes when I bought it, has been on PS2's for over 5yrs now, wish I could get 6k+ miles out of them though!

Fronts need replacing before MoT next month but rears are fine so I'll be sticking with PS2's, no hardship smile

I've been trying to order some MPSS for my CGTS and I am being told the rears (265 35 R20 Y 92) are around a 12 week wait at present. frown

I tried the same but no availability like you have found. Going to switch to a manufacturer who doesn't seem to create these self inflicted issues.

I had the same problem with Michelin PSS and got them from MyTyres. Two from Germany and two came from France. Took about a week.
