Well guys thanks to all your help I put a deposit down today to lock down a build slot. Sounds like the PC are having a demo car with PSE so I can check it out before I finalise spec. Will share my thoughts. If a no go then will upgrade lights because the ones on the mlite are superb.

Re price discount I managed was a tank of fuel, and a full experience day (rather than half day!). PC wouldnt even round down my monthly payments by a few quid! Plus I've been told I'll get a few Porsche goodies...whatever that means. Interestingly I tried autobid who reckon they could save just under £1500 through a factory order, from a dealer. I wasn't convinced, plus I'm doing PX so that's important given I won't get the car for 10/11 months.
Part ex wise do they give you a price for what they reckon it will be in 10/11 months time?
Too many variables to give me a price now. I.e. Demand in the dealer network, tyre wear, mileage, etc.
Ollie I have just got back after 2 hours in 718 Cayman S with PSE. One word -awesome. It will definitely be on my option list!

I'm next on the list to firm up my CS order so am interested in any discounts that you guys have agreed with OPC - is it down to the options value (I'm looking at over £15k at present) or something else? Finance for instance?
Not really sure what was the deciding factor in me getting a discount. Last July when I placed my order (before any of us had heard/driven a 718 Cayman) the overriding consensus of internet warriors was the new Cayman was going to be sh*te. Only an idiot would buy a 4 Cylinder Porsche, etc, etc. I genuinely believe this put a lot of people off. To say the car was due to be launched only a few months later I believe I was surprisingly the first on the list at my OPC. Maybe they thought Cayman's wouldn't sell and needed to give me a nudge to order one???

About the time I ordered another PHer mentioned his OPC (fortunately a sister dealership to my OPC) immediately offered a discount when he enquired about a new Cayman. I mentioned this to my OPC who matched it without hesitation.

There is a weird end to the tale. When I collected my car my sales dude said that someone else had quoted me and my discount (I'd posted about it on here last year) when ordering their Cayman. As a result he'd got in serious trouble for giving me a discount in the first place. confused

Ps I did have finance and about £10k of options on a base Cayman.

Hi Neil, I note you have a 718 Cayman. I am genuinely interested in what you think of it? Picking up a 718 CS for the day on Saturday. Finding it difficult to find reviews of the 2L model. In the market for a Cayman (S) and still undecided on 718/ 981 base model or S model. Tending towards 981 S at present but still open minded.

Not sure I can add much to what's already been said. I came from a base 981 Boxster to the base 718 Cayman. I personally think the 718 is much faster (soooooo much more torque), more comfortable, and has slightly sharper handling. PCM is leagues ahead and the interior seems to be a little better quality. The only thing that lets it down is the sound. The 981 sounded exotic/expensive, with a beautiful engine sound and exhaust sound. The 718 has the most boring/ordinary engine sound but the exhaust sound is pretty good and with PSE it's great. It sounds much better from the outside! Of course, sound is all about personal taste. Many on here wouldn't go near a 718 just because of how it sounds compared to a 981.

The other difference is the turbo. Again, many on here get their beards in a twist about lag and throttle response. Yes, the 981 sounded amazing revving it up to the redline, but how often do we do that? For me, not very often, the Porsche is my daily. If your Porsche is a weekend toy, then a 981 might be the way forward. The massive torque improvement in the 781 is more beneficial to me.

As for Base v S. My choice was made purely on budget. I could afford a 2.0 with some nice options or a poverty spec S. The 2.0 is still a seriously quick car so I chose the former. A 2.0 718 is as quick as a 981 S.

Get a test drive in them all. If your OPC knows your serious about spending some cash they will happily let you test them all.

Next step. Ignore everyone else's opinion and buy the one you like best!

Let me know if there's anything I've missed you'd like to know. thumbup

While I'm still waiting for my car to arrive I was thinking about how to protect the paint job. My local detailing shop offers a rather expensive wax treatment. They take the car in for two days and supposedly it protects the paint job for years and is recommended for all new cars. The other option is a clear bra but don't they turn yellow over time?

What do you recommend?

I'm going for Nanolex SI3d preceded by a machine polish. I feel i can always see the plastic coatings, particularly if it's just the front

Yep do a search for the various detailing threads here.

I've booked in a 'new car detail' for my 718CS when it arrives. Paint-correction and application of superior wax and protective products with machine-polishing to protect the paintwork and the wheels is well worth the money in my view.

Thanks Neil, It helps put things in perspective. I pickup a Cayman S tomorrow for 24 hrs. I am sure I will love it but I will also get the OPC to give me a drive in a 2.0L car either Boxster or Cayman. That should hopefully help me clarify exactly what I want. Like you it will be a trade off between options and power as I want to restrict my budget.

Ace! Thanks for letting me know. It's still on my spec, and waiting to hear one, but from what I'm hearing it's a must have!

Black sportex seats are in a carmine red 718 at Colchester and Hatfield as at a few weeks ago . Please check if they still have the cars to view
Colchester might have a GB with sportex as well
I got 1000 off at my OPC back in October .... Cash sale
They have that up as an approved used car now with pictures online. Glad I didn't travel to view it. I really don't like the look of the black sportex seats!

I'm going to the PEC next week, checked whether the car I'll be driving has PSE and it does. I'll put some feedback up afterwards.

Which dealers are you using - offering the option to 'borrow' a 718 demo car?

My local centre didn't seem keen on that idea at all ! I'm in Herts.
(I don't crash them regularly either...)

I am using Glasgow OPC. I have been a customer of 10 years and bought 6 cars from them. They offered me the car I did not ask.

By the way an update. I have a car on 24 hr loan picked it up this morning. It turned out to be a 718 Boxster S as they have had to keep the Cayman S on site for demo purposes. Its the only one they have at present. I've been out in it for the last 4 hours or so. Must admit I have gone in with an open mind genuinely looking to enjoy the car. So far I have been disappointed. Not in the same league as my previous 981 Spyder or even the car I had before that 981 Boxster S. I was seriously considering buying one, Its looking very unlikely now.
I agree with what has been said before on this forum and by some of the motoring press. Technically its better / faster. It looks good both outside and in and the tech has been updated but the 4 pot turbo definitely changes the character of the car. I don't have the usual smile on my face. I am at home watching the rugby rather than out messing about. I now see why the are so many 718 Boxsters on the dealer network. Perhaps the Cayman will be different.

Reading for me, never bought a car from them. Had a test in the non S, asked for a longer drive in the S and have it for a day in a few weekends time.

Lockdown was last week, build completion scheduled for April 28th. Might just beat 10 months from deposit paid to car delivered. Final spec:

718 Cayman base model
Carrara white metallic
Standard Cayman 18" wheels
Standard seats and black interior
Park assist front and rear
Electrically folding mirrors
Rear wiper
Manual box
PASM and PTV
Wheel centres with Porsche crest
Cruise control
Sport steering wheel
Climate control
Heated seats
Smoking package
Carbon interior
Nav module
Connect +
Digital radio

Nav and connect were late decisions, and ended up bumping a few things I fancied but didn't really need off the spec.

OPC Bolton have been fine about lending me demo cars to try, but have had to book well in advance as there were big queues of people wanting to see/hear the new engine. Understandable given how "marmite" going turbo 4 has turned out to be. wink

We have not yet had the conversation - but I would be very surprised. At the time I ordered demand massively outstripped available supply, and we were just post Brexit, so no-one had any way of knowing what 2017 prices were going to be like. It didn't look good.

If they manage to hold the price I ordered at I'll consider myself very lucky. If there are increases I'll want to talk about sharing the burden with them.

Ok understandable.
Coast2coast quote about £1500 off which works out about £1k off the Porsche configuration tool price as I guess that's missing about £500 of OTR cost.
