So spent the afternoon at Porsche Chiswick. Let myself get schmoozed by the perfectly pleasant salesman. Took a spin in a bright frickin yellow 718 Boxster S. And signed on the dotted line for a 718 Cayman S.
I was also in Chiswick this afternoon looking at GT Silver before I commit to my current order for Agate Grey.

Saw the yellow one out the front. It is VERY yellow.

What did you think of the gt silver? I like agate in most lights but in some it seems to have a slight brown element. Not sure if that's just me or it really does have some brown elements.

They only had GT Silver on a 911. Unfortunately I didn't have my Rhodium Silver Cayman so I couldn't make a direct comparison but it didn't wow me. Probably stick with Agate but my deadline day is in approximately two weeks. Something about deadline day before the Germans b*gger off on holidays.

Things I may add/alter are PASM, not yet convinced it's worth it, Sport Chrono likewise, and I want to change the brakes from red to yellow, which suit sapphire blue better.

Should be shipped toward the end of November, so quite a wait.
Happy camper here though.

Oh, and I took a quick snap of the yellow 718 Boxster S on me phone, which I'll post up here in a bit. It turned heads cruising round West London, and a bunch of little schoolkids all stared and shouted WHOA as we burbled by. Not a subtle car! smile

Try PASM with 20's and you'll sign on the dotted line for it.
Does it come with climate and auto wipers as standard now?
Delete DAB. I have it and what does it do???
Does BOSE still site two speaker behind the seats, so they're muffled?
Don't forget cruise... oh, it's a manual - weekend fun car?

GT Silver is classic, Agate dull, dull, dull. Rhodium still wows me...

+1 to PASM. If its a DD Id say yes to climate and auto wipers - and I'd add a rear wiper, though some don't like the aesthetics. I'd forget Bose unless the standard (the old SPP) is naff - Bose is no great shakes and I certainly can't see £800 in it. I'd personally give cruise a miss - if you want the car to do the driving for you Adaptive Cruise looks a better bet (but pricey).

I do less than 5k miles a year, so the car is an indulgence rather than a necessity, certainly. I have an M235i at the moment, and I've only done just over 6k in the 18 months I've had it from new.

The M235i has the ZF 8-speed auto, and is the first auto I've had. Though I always select manual and flappy-paddle my way through the gears, I truly miss the ability to separate the power from the drive with a clutch. I guess I feel more engaged with a manual, more in control, and in a low-slung, mid-engined dedicated sports car like the 718, I felt manual was the only way to go for me.

Not sure on the Bose, I just assumed it would be a markedly better option than whatever comes as standard? Tbh I don't listen to the stereo often when I'm driving - much more likely to have stereo off and windows down so I can listen to the engine note. Perhaps the Bose isn't the right way to go.

No??

Jesus I just assumed such things were standard on all cars. Porsche really give you frickin nothing. Absolutely need auto wipers - will spec that.

Climate just gives you dual-zone right?

Sorry what's DD?

Yeh decided against the rear wiper for aesthetic reasons.

Everyone is saying go with PASM huh. Really is worth the £971??

Sorry guys, another question, I'm new to Porsche so really know next to nothing about the spec and config options.

The Sport Chrono option, which gives you the mode switch by the steering wheel; if you don't spec this, where is the mode switch?

DD - Daily Driver

Re climate, yep dual zone with temps, otherwise its manual up and down.

Manual vs PDK is a personal preference, but if you're concerned about residuals it does impact, but the PDK box is so good, I loved my manual Cayman S (987 gen 2) but I would always buy PDK the changes are so fast and you can run it in manual mode.

Re PASM, thats another thing I would spec, especially if you're going with 20s, the roads in this country are crap and it makes a massive difference.

Re Chrono, it gives you the dial on the steering wheel. One thing I am not clear on is whether you still get the "sport" button regardless?

On the 981, you'd get a sport button regardless of whether you specced Chrono or not, Chrono would give you a additional "Sport Plus" button.

Climate gives you climate as opposed to manual aircon. Dual zone isn't really the issue.

DD - sorry, daily driver (as opposed to weekend fun car only).

PASM is night and day different from the standard suspension - the ride in Normal mode is far better (particularly if you go for 20" wheels), and Sport is still perfectly useable. Personally I'd stick with 19" wheels - even in PASM Sport the ride is better than the normal car on 20". I think £1000 is better spent on PASM rather than £1500 on 20" wheels. But obviously it depends on how important the look of 20" wheels is to you.

Yep so long as there is the Sport button option without speccing Sport Chrono, then I won't spec it.

Okay. I'm persuaded.

The test drive I had around West London (fairly dreadful roads) in the 718 Boxster S had PASM, and it seemed fine.

Definitely double check, wouldn't surprise me if Porsche have got rid of the "sport" button to encourage people to take Chrono.

Here is my specification with lockdown 8 weeks away:

Base price 718 Cayman S 982131 £ 48,834.00
Price for Equipment £ 11,316.00
Total Price* £ 60,150.00

Exterior Colour White 0Q £ 0.00
Like the Sapphire Blue but white is free and hides road rash pretty well.

Interior Colour Black / Bordeaux Red two-tone leather interior BM £ 1,680.00
Have no issue with the standard interior but having sat in a few with leather
it really felt like I was in an expensive car. It just makes the cockpit that
little bit special. Some gtechniq L1 should enhance its longevity.

Exterior Model designation '718' 718 £ 0.00
Just 3 digits to clean rather than a whole sentence across the rump!

Bi-Xenon headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) 603 £ 591.00
Standard Xenons are probably adequate but these are brighter and I am optically challenged.

ParkAssist (front and rear) with reversing camera 638 £ 1,044.00
I find the camera really useful on the current steed as I am crap at reversing.

Electrically folding exterior mirrors including courtesy lighting 748 £ 203.00
Just to remind me whether I have locked the car or not!

Transmission / Chassis Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) 250 £ 1,922.00
Porsche engineering at its best.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) 475 £ 971.00
Lowers the car for better aesthetics on 19 inch wheels and will save a fortune in chiropractor bills smile

Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) incl. mechanically locking rear differential 220 £ 890.00
Dubious about its applicability to driving on public roads but I just need to have an LSD on a sports car.

Sport Chrono Package including mode switch QR5 £ 1,416.00
PDK and SC are a match made in Stuttgart

Wheels 19-inch Cayman S wheels 398 £ 0.00
Like the new Cayman S 5-spokers and the ride should be perfect in conjunction with PASM. Oh, they
are free too!

Interior
Automatically dimming mirrors with integrated rain sensor P13 £ 332.00
Not sure I will keep this in the build. Have been practising this week using manual inputs
to both wipers and rear-view mirror and seem to have got the knack. Mind
you, leaning out the window to cover the wing mirrors with cloths is a bit dicey!
Also did not spec cruise control as I am not a fan.

GT sport steering wheel 858 £ 186.00
Like it. Compact and bijou like my wallet will be shortly.

Heated multifunction steering wheel 489 £ 315.00
Buttons to press..what's not to like? Don't really need it heated though.

Sports seats (2-way, electric) P08 £ 0.00
Found these very supportive and free again! I did try the sports seats plus but my shoulders are too broad
for the snug bolsters.

Two-zone automatic climate control 573 £ 518.00
Two-zone worthless but climate control rather useful - set and forget.

Seat heating 342 £ 284.00
This one is for the better half. Personally I don't wear skirts...well not outdoors.

Smoking package 583 £ 36.00
Covers up the centre console change cup with a little flap.

Interior Leather
Steering column casing in leather Exclusive XNS £ 222.00
No point having leather if you are staring at a lump of plastic in front of you.

Audio / Comm
Digital radio QV3 £ 284.00
Need to tune into Radio 5 Live for TMS. Hoping the Sound Package Plus is
adequate at 150W and 8 speakers to hear Blowers and Aggers chuckling away.

Connect IU2 £ 422.00
The only option I have specified with one eye on resale. I do have an iPhone so
it may come in handy once CarPlay matures. Currently it does support Apple Maps for navigation
purposes (maps displayed on PCM screen) if a future owner wishes to use them.

Well that's it at the moment. Still time to change my mind........

Nice Spec. Would probably drop the wheel size an inch and add Carplay but otherwise almost what I would choose personally. My own opinion on Chrono is it is mostly a pricey gimmick and I found the normal suspension bo be a nice mix. The slip diff could well be worth it with that much torque on tap IMHO.
