Well guys thanks to all your help I put a deposit down today to lock down a build slot. Sounds like the PC are having a demo car with PSE so I can check it out before I finalise spec. Will share my thoughts. If a no go then will upgrade lights because the ones on the mlite are superb.

Re price discount I managed was a tank of fuel, and a full experience day (rather than half day!). PC wouldnt even round down my monthly payments by a few quid! Plus I've been told I'll get a few Porsche goodies...whatever that means. Interestingly I tried autobid who reckon they could save just under £1500 through a factory order, from a dealer. I wasn't convinced, plus I'm doing PX so that's important given I won't get the car for 10/11 months.
Congrats. cool

10/11 months ... so you're likely to be behind the wheel this year? Pretty good then from what I hear - all the factory re-tooling etc that's taking place. I had heard rumours that no Caysters ordered in 2017 would be delivered in the same year.

So now for the long wait ... smile

This PDLS conversation has caused me a problem - currently got standard Xenon on order - order placed September, build end of Feb, delivery end of March latest but very close to VED changes...

I want to take the car to Europe probably once a year - bumper off to change the lights to LHD is something they really could do with communicating in the sales material - not the cornering stuff which is great, but in my mind not worth £550 hence not spec'ed.

So, contacted OPC this pm to ask about making changes (adding PDLS) - they have been saying for a while, "do not amend your spec if you want to keep that build slot etc" so did a lockdown of sorts about a month ago. Their advice is to not change it to be more confident of avoiding the VED increase - given they must take a slice of that £550 this struck a chord.

Now I'm in a right dilemma, if the build is delayed and VED strikes that is going to be a seriously expensive set of lights; the other side of me thinks it's OPC covering themselves and I should just go for it as seriously, they can't be running low on PDLS units at the factory - surely that is the sort of thing they have a reasonable surplus on.

FWIW for me pros of the PDLS are - 4 point LED DRLs look great, a bit brighter, great on rural roads (I'll make use of that TBH) and the once a year euro switch ease. Cons are I don't like chrome, refuse to pay £135 to have them body colour matched and lines are cleaner without them.

Any views on those who don't have the PDLS - any regrets not speccing (too dim?) and anyone had experience of changing the spec right at the lockdown date and experiencing a delay as a result (on a standard type option)?

A few points ...

What is this about changing lights to LHD for trips to Europe? What does PDLS do in this regard that standard xenons don't?

What do you mean about 'don't like chrome' if you do upgrade to PDLS? The light cluster is all plastic whether standard or PDLS no? What £135 body match option? Am not aware of any of this, it's not in the configurator nor brochure ... nor have I seen any body-colouring in any light cluster nor surround on any new Porsche?

In terms of late spec change pushing back build date, it's not just a case of supply of PDLS units, it's the system changes required to factory queue in-system specification that may push the build date back, depending on where your order is.

You say you have had a lock-down 'of sorts'. Well is that your final factory lockdown or not? The final factory lockdown is the order that goes to the factory, and it's usually changes made to spec past this point which will push the build date back. With a late March delivery I would expect your final factory lockdown to be happening right about now.

My advice would be to go into the OPC and have a full and frank conversation. Explain your dilemma and firstly find out from them if indeed the final spec has indeed gone to factory yet. If not, there shouldn't realistically be a delay to build. If final spec has gone to factory - try to find out if a late change now will in actual fact push the delivery date beyond 1st April (VED change). They should be picking up the phone to Porsche Germany to find this out to the best of their ability.

Good luck.

Regarding changing a factory order, I'd heed the OPC's advice. I know from experience (and my own OPC's advice) that for new models or limited runs where demand is high, changes could move an order back by months not by days or weeks in production planning. This is especially true of PTS or GT run cars.

Regarding PDLS, I live in the countryside and having dynamic cornering is great but it's the level of illumination which I find more important given how dark it is. I personally wouldn't say the premium is worth it given your situation but I have always spec'd my cars with PDLS and having not spec'd certain options of that sort in the past, it has niggled me.

My understanding from various forums is that PDLS has an option in PCM which switches over - the standard Xenons are not self levelling/motorised and this option is not available, the change is made using a torque wrench on a bolt in the light cluster to set it to "touring" mode and (apparently) it's bumper off to do this.

Sorry, not clear enough in my post - I'm talking about the headlight washers - they are chrome, this is OCD on my part TBH, with added rage due to the ludicrous price to paint them. AFAIK the light cluster looks pretty similar.

My OPC are being vague on the process, reading between the lines I think this is a Porsche GB thing they instruct most to do - they have openly said that the order system is such that the safest path is to finalise the order early (well in advance of final dates) - in their experience this achieves the best end result in terms of delivery coming in early or on time. It's a regional OPC with a relatively low allocation (e.g. only my car and the demonstrator have slots in Jan/Feb on base 718, and only 2x 718S until April) so I suspect from a cashflow perspective, they are quite well tuned to making sure that things happen when they are supposed to.

Most of my driving in the dark is commuter traffic through country lanes, so it's rare to fire up full beam anyway. It's my first Porsche, and I hope its not my last, in which case I guess my spec sheet will be more focussed as my experience develops.

I think I am going to follow the OPC advice - they have been absolutely first class through the whole process (I have been in dialog since April 16, but delayed the order to this Spring). In terms of Europe, I'll see what the throw of the standard Xenons is like, if it's anything like my outgoing BMW 330d or the wife's Golf GTI, the light line on dipped is completely flat anyway and I won't be adjusting anything. If it's more of a traditional setup with notable bias to the nearside I'll limit the time driving at night over there...

Thanks both for your help - much appreciated.

I can't get excited about headlights. The standard headlights without the ugly protruding washer look okay to me. I spec'd my old Scirocco GT without xenons and if I went by forum opinion I was going to crash sooner rather than later due to the poor halogens. There was nothing wrong with them. The same went for my previous BMW. I'll admit the headlights were poor but nothing some upgraded bulbs for 80 quid didn't fix. I now have LEDs in my Audi and thought, at last I have the top of the range lights, no more lighting options but alas no, Audi want nearly a grand to make the indicators flash differently and the headlights to move around... I didn't bother.

If you go by forum opinion Porsche make awful cars in standard form. The standard suspension is terrible so you must spec PASM or you will end up with a spinal injury. If you don't spec leather, BOSE or nav you'll never sell it. The standard lights are woeful and you will hit a badger and die in a fireball if you don't spec PDLS. If you don't spec climate you'll be constantly fiddling with the air con. No one wants manual. Your other half won't speak to you if you don't spec the interior lighting package. Sport chrono turns you into a racing driver and without it, the car will be sluggish. The interior plastics are cheap (they're not) and you will feel inferior without full leather...... I think I've covered them all.

My experiences:

981 Halogens are as good as my wife's 2016 BMW X1 LEDs.

(BTW, her X1 has cornering lights. Not swivelling headlights, but an extra light to the side of the headlamp which illuminates on cornering. Simples!)

PDLS Plus may be one to stay away from. I had self-dipping headlamps on my 2010 E-Class but found that when negotiating a local twisty turny B road they would dip when they encountered reflective bend markers. So you whizz along with full beam on, come to a tricky corner where you need best illumination, and the lights would dip! Soon switched that function off. Stupid.

PDLS and PDLS plus info here: http://www.porsche.com/international/models/718/71...

Also, four spot DRLs are interesting the first time you see them but shout "Porsche" which may be a bad thing as well as good if a hater then tries to impede your progress.

Yeah OPC told delivery in most dealerships is 2018, luckily my local is a flagship dealer so I secured one of their last November slots. They told me part of the factory is being rebuilt hence the delays. Good though coincides, with me turning 40, hence the mid life crisis

I am in the same position re speccing PDLS lights before lockdown in early March . This was due to someone querying the standard bi-xenons and why they did not have washers i.e they are not powerful enough to legally require them . I have come to the conclusion if you like driving quickly at night and are used to the best headlights then you should choose to upgrade to PDLS . I agree with the previous post complaining about the cost of colour matching the washers , an absolute liberty . As for driving on the Continent I put some stick on adaptors , bought on the ferry for a fiver , on my existing car's directional xenons which seemed to do the trick but did not bother on the next trip and nobody seemed to mind. I too will have an unsaleable base 718 manual in yellow with standard interior , no PASM , no navigation and no PSE . It will have a carbon gear knob , however , which I am sure you will agree makes all the difference come sale day .

When it comes to gear knob top trumps, carbon wins every time.

The subject of pdls etc has been discussed on planet-9.

Not heard (pardon the pun) of these guys before but looks like a relatively affordable alternative to PSE if you are happy to go aftermarket.

Update on the midnight blue, two-tone sport tex interior we were talking about with the Nick Murray videos.

He has a new vid where he picked up the car from the dealer. I have to say, the colour looks awesome as does the interior. It would look fantastic on a Cayman with those Carrera Sport Classic 20in wheels.

I presume you've seen the Autogefuehl Cayman S review ... the GB with the Blue & Crayon looks great. I am still considering the GB, but I'm not very daring on interior colour so probably end up with the black Sport-Tex.

I prefer the PDSL xenon lights (brighter and you get the four point DRLs) so I think that is a good choice, probably many others wouldn't agree though ... seat heating is one of those things that I've ditched, each to their own, I have it in two other cars which get used daily and I hardly ever use it. I think with material seats as well I'm still not sure it is essential.

BTW, when did you place your order? Have you had lock-down confirmed? My OPC is saying they have a provisional build date in April (ordered in December) but no lock-down date as yet. This could mean lots of things ... I'm guessing that this is completely provisional and will end up getting pushed back. I have heard many people on here and other forums now saying that OPCs are saying no 718s until 2018.

Hi Roberto,

I went for the midnight blue and it does look awesome.

The metallic paint really does sparkle in direct sunlight, however, it doesn't come out in the pictures I've taken.

That is beautiful. I'm currently a Carbon Black BMW which is a blackey-blue colour. Sometimes it looks black, in another lkgiht a dark blue, purple. Which is the kind of colour yours looks like. I've seen some people say it's a boring colour, no way.....it's the business.

Fortunately everyone I've shown the colour, wheels and interior to has really liked them, which gives me more confidence in going this route. A safer option for me would have been the black and crayon two tone interior. Personally, I'm not keen on black interiors, especially in a small two seater, which limits the options for me with the GB exterior. My intital choice was Agate with the black/red two tone interior, but just felt in the end I'd go for something a bit different as I've got black/red in my BMW.

I didn't really think much about the lights until I learnt the standard ones weren't "proper" xenons on this thread and lacked the four point DRLs. I had been told all models had the four point DRLs as they wanted to standardise that across all models. i think I'll appreciate the brighter lights and additional functions of the PDSL a lot more than a noisier exhaust.

I ordered in October. I've a couple of weeks to lock the spec.
