My 2001 Ford Galaxy 1.9 tdi which I recently bought was lacking power, the speedo was not working, fuel gauge fluctuating and the Glow plug light flashing. On checking the fuse box I saw that fuse 34 engine management was removed. I replaced this fuse and the car started running well with speedo working, fuel gauge working normally and no glow plug light flashing. However after a mile or so it lost power and when I went to turn ignition off, the engine carried on running even with key removed. I pulled out the 34 fuse and the engine stopped, replaced it and restarted, with the same story, good power for a while then low power and engine not turning off until fuse removed. A friend connected up a portable error code meter but nothing was shown. Has anyone any ideas what this could be caused by? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have no intimate experience of your particular engine but there is only one reason a diesel engine continues to run.

The engine is still getting fuel from somewhere.

This could be due to a fuel pump remaining energised after switch off on some diesel engines.

There are also horror stories out there of engine oil getting into the combustion chamber & allowing ignition of the mixture of this & air.

Whether this is through over-filling/ring/valve seal failure I am not sure precisely.

I even heard a second/third-hand story of someone changing an engine but it didn't come with a dipstick, the one they used was wrong & it ran on like this, whether it is true or not, I wouldn't like to speculate.

Water/corrosion in the fuse box?
I don't know about Galaxys, but Corsa Cs which have a problem with water getting into the fuse box have similar symptoms. Connections are broken in one circuit and it starts drawing power/earthing through another.
If you catch it soon enough, it's just a case of drying out and cleaning all connections and earths then sealing against future water ingress. If your car was running previously with no fuse to the engine management system, it must have been getting power from somewhere so there must have been a short somewhere.

If he ever comes back, I know with 99% certainty what is causing it but I need the question answered first wink

Thanks for the replies and sorry not got back sooner. The problems have now been sorted, two seperate issues. A previous owner had wired something direct from ignition switch and when this wire was disconnected the ignition worked fine, re switching engine off. All electrics are working ok so don't know what this was supplying. The power and limp mode issue was caused by a split in the pipe from boost control valve to turbo.

Even though he's got it sorted now, I'd like to know what your solution was, I'm intrigued by the hint of mystery.

I had one in with exactly the same issues.

No fault codes etc etc and would just keep running with the key out.

After a lot of head scratching I started over and realised that one of the rear doors didnt lock and the electric window didnt work.

It turned out the wires in the door loom had rubbed through and somehow where feeding back power to the ignition circuit blowing that fuse and keeping the ignition live even with the key out !
