I've just stripped down a type 9 box from a Sierra, after getting it very cheap (yeah I know, but still...)
not the uprated box, the one with roller bearings on layshaft.

It's a bit strange - apparently it ran fine, but had a 'clunk' when engaging and disengaging clutch, and car was scrapped.
Now I know why.....

Gears looks good inside, but dirty, and has a big glob of stuff stuck to the magnet (metal filings ?).
Layshaft and rollers are really *trashed*. Layshaft has a big undercut area on top, and rollers are all pitted.
But no obvious wear on anything else - sychro rings look fine....and layshaft gearset not worn even where rollers bear on it.

I knew type 9 is hard on layshaft, but this is amazing, everything else is fine.....

Has anyone else had this ??

Thanks. They do mention layshaft wear.

I'm still surprised gbox doesn't seem to have serious wear anywhere else - magnet did an excellent job of capturing the filings,
So new layshaft and long rollers (and new brgs) should restore gbox to health.
