  • Switch badly positioned
  • Mechanism slow to release - this is more noticeable with manual than auto
  • Brake can never be set "just on", it's fully on or fully off.
I absolutely hate the damn thing. Wouldn't be so bad if there was a Hold feature like on Mercs. (A double press of the brake pedal applies the parking brake lightly.)

I prefer using the stick, incidentally the 718 in manual works the opposite way to the GTS..

You dont need to release it, it does it it's self.

From the handbook:

Automatic electric parking brake release when driver's intention to drive off is detected.

If the engine is running, the driver's door is closed and the driver's seat belt is fastened, it is still possible to drive off normally even though the parking brake is on.

The electric parking brake detects the driver's intention to drive off and releases automatically. The warning light on the instrument panel goes out.

I drove a manual 2.0 and pdk 2.5 today. No issues with the clutch pedal at all. both are great, it's difficult decision between the two.

My 981 does have a "hill hold" feature. This applies the parking brake automatically when the gradient is steep enough. "HOLD" appears in the L/H dial. To release, just drive off.

I imagine this is the same in the 718 too? Otherwise, on less steep gradients, set the parking brake and once again just drive off.

I prefer this to my E-Class "HOLD" system, as the firm brake pedal press to apply "HOLD" was a pain to get right.

Yes, so does mine. But you can't engage it on demand and you can't trust it to spot a hill. As such I consider it useless.

Nonetheless there's a LOT that's good about 981! biggrin

Arguably the car's worst feature. At least with PDK if you LFB you can avoid the need to use it much of the time. Would drive me mad with a manual.

Seems pretty predictable In mine. Also just bashing the stick to the left without actually engaging reverse will remove it.

Edit: just noticed you were talking about PDK.

Talking of pedals... (poor link!)...

I was pleased to find the 981 had a little right footrest for when using cruise.

So many manufacturers offer cruise, but nowhere to rest your right foot so it has to either hover over the pedal or be pulled back to sit flat on the floor.

My previous TTS and wife's A3 both had r/h footrests. She just bought an X1 - no footrest. Can't recall a BMW which did.
