[quote=amgmcqueen]How do you guys overlook the fact these have a 4 pot that sounds dreadful?
I feel like going out on a limb here by saying that I have always enjoyed the sound of a WRX. I went to a few Rally's and fell in love with the aggressive and distinctive sound it made. Now that Porsche has made a more refined version, a version that is now the fastest 4 banger ever produced (unless you count the impractical KTM X-Bow), whats not to appreciate? I just sold a 1969 SS Camaro that sounded delicious but drove like st. Therefore I understand the equation "Engine sound = performance" is pure fantasy.
This is my first Porsche so it's a genuine question, why do Porsche owners revel in dissing other Porsche's? There seems to be genuine joy palpable with some posts denigrating the 718. Go to the BMW, Mercedes and I dare say Subaru forums and you will not see this level of abuse against the very cars people have come on here to discuss. What is the motivation? To make people feel bad about their choice to buy a 718? In the false belief this will bring up the resale of their F6? Even in the somewhat negative reviews (i.e Chris Harris and Evo) the consensus is that this a tremendous car and an incredible handling, torquey and fun car - and still the best mid-engine sports car this side of a 488.
Personally, I will use my car to get to and from work and a nice spirited drive every other weekend and a track day here and there. Personally I don't care what other people feel about the "sound" of my car as long as I enjoy it. Its just becoming very boring when these comments keep getting bounced around.

What you see as dissing I see as an expression of shere disappointment at what Porsche have done to the Boxster.I feel like going out on a limb here by saying that I have always enjoyed the sound of a WRX. Maybe it's all been done to death. Let's get over it. And this IS the 718 +ve vibes thread...(Sure, I shan't be buying one because I want six cylinders, but there's no denying the 718s are terrific cars.)

This is my first Porsche too and I have the exact same feelings. It's absolutely bizarre.Personally, I will use my car to get to and from work and a nice spirited drive every other weekend and a track day here and there. Absolutely no substance behind it but part of me pictures a load of grumpy 60+ year old men set in their ways droning on about how things were better back in the day. Or maybe people feel the need to show the world they are a 'proper petrol head' (or something) by chastising anyone who hints at liking a car with four cylinders and a turbo.
It really is ridiculous and Porsche owners are the only people I've seen do it.

Lots of people loved the unique NASP flat six and are upset at losing it to a ubiquitous turbo'd four
Is it really that hard to understand?
No and it's fair enough - what's also easy to understand is that lots of people prefer the NA6 but can live with the I4T in what is a great car either way - those people are no more or no less enthusiastic about cars/driving than the others. Is it really that hard to understand?

+1 My first Porsche, too. I was aware of the grating negativity thrown at any new Porsche before I came here - headlamps the wrong shape, not air-cooled, too big, etc, etc.... There's always something new to whine about and I becomes tired decidedly quickly. Oh, and residuals. Could be the same "bah, humbug" attitude of "...mine MUST be better than yours, so I look down my nose at you and will NOT wave back!"
Or... we're all just so rich we have nothing to do but anally discuss and argue everything Porsche do.

Indeed and one wonders what the actual reason is for all that moaning/negativity.Some even lament Porsche dropping the orange indicator lenses back 15 years ago, yes really.

Just got an email from Porsche Centre East London.
They have a 16(16) 718 CAYMAN S, Agate Grey Metallic/Black, 7,450 miles, £57,900 in their stock. In case anyone Interested?
Saw this earlier. Big mileage surely a press or PEC car? They have a 16(16) 718 CAYMAN S, Agate Grey Metallic/Black, 7,450 miles, £57,900 in their stock. In case anyone Interested?
Let a flat six "dinosaur" like me say something nice about the 718. I quote from this week's Autocar regarding 718 Cayman S and it's group test to find Britain's best drivers car :-
".....what could also do with a more characterful engine? It's the 718 Cayman S, according to Saunders, who is also recording lap times in all the cars. The 718's turbo four "gives much more instant torque and grunt then the 911", he says "and could keep up with anything else here thanks to that handling". And that, in a nutshell is the Cayman denuded. Everything that makes it a superb road car also makes it a wonderful track car : it's fluid steering, tight body movements and perfect balance. It's so good that it could do with another 50 bhp to fully exploit its chassis but as Saunders says, it's "laptimes underlines its dynamic brilliance. It felt perfectly geared for Anglesey and had cornering composure to spare. Never missed an apex and never clipped a cats eye. For the money - it's incredible".
The other cars in the test were a BMW M2, BMW M4 GTS, Honda NSX, Aston Martin. Vantage GT8, McLaren 570S, McLaren 675 LT Spider, Porsche 911R, Jaguar F Type SVR, Ferrari 488 GTB, and Ford Focus RS.

There is history here though and I don't think it applies to other manufacturers. There might be some owners with 'smugititis' who covet their F6 but they are in the minority, what we are seeing is a genuine level of horror with whats happened and some of this comes back to the long held suspicion that the senior management team in Porsche don't really like the Cayman/Boxster range in the sense that it always seemed to be hamstrung against the 911 in some way. This finally stopped with the 981 GTS, in this car they created a reason not to buy a 911.
Its as if Porsche produced a car that was almost too good against the 911 on the spec. sheet. Porsche it seems, needs to create a solid reason again to buy a 911 over its little sibling and here it is.
If BMW announced an M3 CSL with a 4 pot engine or a C63 AMG with a 4 pot engine and kept the M5 and E63 at their current specification there would be pitch-forks and pyres in exactly the same fashion.
And no offence to Subaru owners but the cars they have produced have never hit the heights of the Boxster or Cayman in a consistent fashion and so 'fiddling with the formula' is not much of a problem for Subaru as the cars only had 4 cylinders to begin with.
In addition to all the above there is an undercurrent of discontent against Porsche regarding what happened to the GT3, GT4 and GT3 RS launches and this has removed some of the good-will towards Porsche as a company that some people had.
I hope that helps answer your question.

Sobered up now and reverting to "F6 dinosaur" mode that engine would prevent me ever buying one. Don't know now what I would buy if I ever had to replace my all noise but no - go BGTS but it certainly wouldn't be a 718 sadly for all its undoubted improvements elsewhere over 981.Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
