I have a GT4 that I did have advertised on Autotrader and still have advertised on Pistonheads as I am / was going to sell as also have a 911 Supersport being restored and its due back next month after 15 months of work...

Problem being, the more I drive my GT4 and don't thing of selling it the more I am enjoying it.

Query is - there seems to be a lot of GT4 owners changing to 991 GTS's and I quite like the thought of 4 seats (and they look like a 90% of the driver involvement of a GT4?!?) - I have 3 kids and means in theory I would be able to use the car more as could take the 2 older kids to various activities whilst the current Mrs MUR44Y looks after the newborn... at present I can't do that.

I could in theory use the Supersport when it comes back but would I be better selling both and having 1 car - a 991 GTS?

Has anyone made the move and regretting it or is it a natural change to be making?

I currently only use the car twice a week to run my oldest (7) to football and rugby and its epic but hardly being fully utilised!

Also, potentially doing a track day in the car - do I need to bother changing tyre pressures or is standard set up a-ok to go out and do 3 or 4 laps?

Thanks re both queries!!!

Hi mate,

I have a 991 GTS but did look at getting the GT4 before and chose the GTS purely on the slightly better practically.

Had it now 6 weeks and really enjoying it. Can't compare as I don't have a GT4. 2 different cars I guess.

One benefit you have is that he residuals on the GT4 allow you to enter the higher priced GTS so seems like a good option to me.

Good luck with the search!

In my view, aside from the questionable practicality of two tiny rear seats and more comfort, it offers nothing that would have me switch from a GT4. Everyone has their own reasons for changing of course, but I suspect that quite a few that have sold their GT4's (for whatever reasons) will live to regret it. Ultimately though, we can offer thoughts, but only you can make that decision. Ask yourself this, if there wasn't the possibility of a premium on selling the GT4, would you bother.

Hi Mu44ay.

I had a 997GTS manual and changed to a GT4 and have now recently changed to a 991GTS PDK. Has taken some getting used to but I am enjoying the PDK and the practical side of the 911. I use my car every day and did around 6k miles in the GT4 and for me that probably wasn't the best use of the car (daily driver mixture of short journeys and motorway use). TBH it wasn't terribly enjoyable if you had to travel for a long distance on the motorway and I was watching the less enjoyable miles rack up these trips. GTS is far better for this type of journey. Cross country and overall drama the GT4 has it, but the GTS is 90% of the way there. If you can have 2 cars then the GT4 is great, if you need your Porsche to be your main car then 911 GTS all the way.

Which car is better is for personal opinions, I regretted it for a few days, but tbh life is short and there are a lot of cars out there to try so I will find another one to keep me happy if I miss the GT4 long term. My daughter (16) fits in the tiny rear seats for reasonable journeys so it does mean the car gets used more than the GT4 for family duties so thats a big tick. With regards to the premium issue, I bought mine second hand for overs and did not recover the amount I paid and I bothered with the change. GT4 is a really really good car, but not a 'great' car imo. GTS is a really great 911 package.

Instead of selling the Supersport to help fund the 991 GTS we ha about a 997 GTS ? At least £25k cheaper (ignore Heegonn prices). I use mine weekends for ferrying kids around...it's a great car. Took mine to the PEC yesterday, perfectly a at home on track.

Thanks for quick feedback...

Finding it a tricky decision as my GT4 does everything you would want for quick blast / short trips, and every time I open the garage it looks immense. Double take when I walk away etc... but I would probably do that for a 991 GTS also as they look great.

I don't use the GT4 every day as I have a LR Defender I use for work, but equally I only have a single garage so not really an option to keep two weekend cars. The 991 GTS would get more use as could take 2 eldest (age 7 and 5) so they would fit in the rear of the 991 but worried id miss the 'specialness' the GT4 gives me.

I guess the 991 GTS would give 90% of that feeling plus add some practicality and with slight overs on the GT4 at present i can move from a £75k list car to a £95k list car for not a lot I imagine.. but there is a niggle Id miss the GT4..... decisions decisions!!!

not a bad idea! had a look at a 997 GTS a few months ago, great looking car... just the 991 is growing on me as been looking online more and more... Supersport likely to be kept until Spring and sell then once all final bits are complete, although lands with me in 2/3/4 weeks. Never restored a car before and its taking a while although should be sharp when all done

If you have a LR Defender and the GT4 is a weekend car then I would definitely keep it. 991GTS looks lovely, but GT4 looks immense and is very special to look at.
Like I said earlier I think I ruined mine by making it a daily driver, for weekend fun you will really struggle to replace the GT4 and I don't think they will be dropping price fast and no faster than the GTS.

If you're not regularly attending track days I'd make the swap. I'd rather have the full fat NA flat six experience in a 911 than the detuned version in a Cayman for road use only.

+1 Tricky one & everyone on here will have a different opinion. I moved from a number of 911s - last one being a 997 C2S to a new 981 Spyder. Loving the Spyder - probably the best Porker I have owned. Love the mid engine balance etc. But there is something iconic about the 911 & sometimes I feel I am missing that. But it isn't enough for me to move back to a 911 at present time. IMO stick with GT4 & use the LR for ferrying the children.

Shiverman hit the nail on the head... If for every day then the GTS makes more sense it you have kids. If its just a weekend toy, you can't beat the GT4.

The GTS is great but its bigger and heavier which equals a bit less fun when you're on it.
GT4 is also a manual gearbox which is hard to find in a GTS.

I think in your situation I would stick with the GT4. Depending on your spec, you might struggle to get more than 90k for the GT4 in real terms so you might have to end up putting in some cash to get yourself into a GTS.

If I had a GT4, you'd never get it off me, regardless of whether it was my only car and I had 4 kids or if I was skint and single.

Character, focus, looks and that undefinable 'specialness'
GT4 has it all of it, in spades...and more besides
991 has it, but lets be honest, whilst not a common car, the shape is seen often enough. GTS spec/stickers just means it's a 911 with bits....not limited.

Having the garage/collection you do, why compromise? get a snotter if you must, for taxi duties.

my 2p for you.

For a daily the gts,for fun the gt4 .

But as is often the case with these threads ,both are brilliant and you can't make a mistake keeping the gt4,or changing to the gts.

Thanks re both queries!!!
Not sure how much track experience you have, but leave the tyre pressures where they are if you are unsure. You'll need to let some air out if you start to cook them after a few laps, but familiarity with the car's setup is a really nice thing to have if you haven't been out on a track before. Do a few laps, see if they get hot. Check pressures, and let air out to no less than standard while hot. If you do end up letting air out, give it a few laps before pushing on too much in the corners, especially if you have a long gap between sessions.

As for the original question... You know you want to keep it, so keep it! (Not sure the value will continue upwards, but if you regret the 991 how will you get another GT4 you love as much?)

I thought about it and then thought, GT4 is a special car, GTS is just a nice car. (all be it a very very nice car at the top of its game)

If I were to change the GT4 to another porker, it would be GT3 or Turbo S, it feels a bit backward to go to a GTS as the GT4 does that job better bar the 2 tiny rear seats.

if you only want one car and use it every day then GTS, but I cannot see you waking up on a Sunday and saying to yourself "lets take the GTS for a blat" esp as it's PDK people choose as I would also.

I agree... Those that haven't driven a GTS won't know how evocative it sounds. The engine is the best thing about it, and theres no flat sport in the torque curve at 4800 revs wink
The GT4 is loud for sure but unlike my old Cayman R, there is no howl in the cabin to speak of.

The GTS has such an amazing howl and together with the sports exhaust thats a lot louder than the 997 variant and closer to that of the GT4, hence why lots modify their 997's.

I strongly suggest you drive a 991 GTS in sport mode and then you'll know which way to go.

Thanks for continual thoughts. Spending far too long looking at 991 GTS and spec's and also at my own GT4 and others... Problem is I love the GT4, took it out last night to take boy to football practice and its so so good for a quick blat...

Will go drive a GTS at the weekend I think at local Porsche dealer and am taking my car north tonight to maybe take on track and do 3 - 4 laps!! Thanks for info on tyre pressures, won't be pushing it too hard so should all be ok!!
