Do I sell my 981 Spyder???
Discussion
Two things I will say having gone GTS to spyder that fly in the face of a few stereotypical views.
First the steering in the 997 isnt as solid as the spyder by that i mean in normal pasm its often less than direct, its that excessive rubber compliance feeling. Yes the spyder isnt quite as communicative as a gts in hard but the turbo rack has closed the gap right down.
Next and this is the big one. A manual 997 Aisin box is not a good change when cold and suffers the 1st gear selection and 2nd gear crunch. It needs an oil heater, incidentally the spyder has one, once warm its fine with nice ratios but the first 10 miles of commute drove me nuts. Often lauded as an all time great box but it just isnt , this comment mostly refers to the 997.1 getrag box which although weaker is a sweeter change. If I bought another GTS it would be PDK even though Im a manual man.
The spyder ratios arent as good as the 997 as often commented but the shift is superior overall.
The GTS is the better choice as an everyday drive but the spyder superior for high days imo.

Hi there G. Sounds like you've answered your own question - you've tried , I'd walk away if I was you - I however love mine and would never want to be without it - we're all different - good luck with your sale
Richard - good evening. Yes the continuing debate in my head ! The major plus is its rarity Seen very very few in my outings. Not even 5 since I have had mine.
Funnily enough my potential sale via a dealer was £5000 premium ... now dropping due to varying factors
So that deal is off and currently I don't have time to think about advertising etc. So come Saturday I'm going out. Roof down. Engine howling
Might fall in love !!!

Maybe , but remember the old adage that you never find love if you try to hard to find it. I'd just accept that maybe, for you it wasn't to be , you'll get out financially neutral at worst and live to fight another day. - that's a good result .Seen very very few in my outings. Not even 5 since I have had mine.

The rarity factor is secondary , I'd go with your heart on this one - keep well
Had my spyder now for 6 months and still get blown away every time i take it out.looking at the new gt3 though and already on note of interest wating list.can see car being launched at geneva next march, if pound/euro exchange rate remains an issue in to next year though can see a couple of points emerging. Firstly the cost of new gt3 or any new porsche may start to go up,and not by a small amount either, but the uk is a big market for porsche with over 12,000 vehicles sold each year.so will be be interesting to see whot emerges price wise.Secondly it may harden prices on spyders as a better used buy, keeping prices strong especially with boxster 718's lacking a bit on the emotional level. So will be selling spyder at some point soon even though gt3 deliveries not starting until late next year. This brexit has certainly brought uncertainty in to the market.

Taking the Spyder, what it loses out in eps v hydraulic to the GTS it more than enough makes up for in noise....sounds far better than the GTS, GT4 and GT3 (including RS btw). I would put the Spyder up there with the 458 on great sound.....this is what people are now chasing hence the dissappointments with the 4 pot Caysters.
Also on power to weight the Spyder has more advantage...especially if the GTS is PDK like mine. Torque at 420 nm is identical on both but at higher rpm in the Spyder.
lol "involving" and you think sound (forced on the 981)_which is very subjective outweighs steering feel and the x51 engine (you can add a very cheap cross over pipe to the GTS)Also on power to weight the Spyder has more advantage...especially if the GTS is PDK like mine. Torque at 420 nm is identical on both but at higher rpm in the Spyder.
I about fell of my chair reading that, along with the power to weight advantage joke.
seems PH is going for fake overrun and looks these days, sad times :-(

Is that why you went for the GT4?
No, I went for the GT4 as I was after the next top of the line Cayman because I loved my R and always buy the best model in the line up.one had to buy blind on the GT4 1.5 years in advance ! but with overs it was not an issue to order it.
as you know I sold my green R (stupid move) , bought a GT4 and have bought another R since.
My GT4 is for sale, yet another over hyped car imo all though it's a great car I feel like the OP about it and how he does with his Spyder.
My R and 987.2 Spyder are way way more fun and that word you use "involving" so the GT4 don't get used bar posing at events in !
The GT4 is a better car in every way bar enjoyment !, I am not a collector, I like driving cars which feel fun below 100 mph, it's that simple.
GT4 is a far far better track car than my cars, but I have also gone off track days and the costs involved with them, rather put the £1k (a real track day cost in these new cars) towards a euro hoon with mates.

Okay....IF you can do maths....work this out then come back to the table and admit you are wrong!
997 GTS din weight 1450kg 408bhp . 981 Spyder din weight 1315kg 375bhp.
they will be the same, hence why it's funny and nothing to do with wrong maths lol , you need 100bhp more to see the difference in the real world, so bar paper stupid figures which you quote ! as I take it your spyder has NO AC and NO radio to quote these figures, the two cars would go up the road just about side by side, lol
but for laughs take a look at some real data, to ease your mind and it does the maths for every one interested.

http://fastestlaps.com/models/porsche-boxster-spyd...
the 981 is slower :-) because at the end of the day the 981 is the detuned GTS lump and the 997 GTS has the real deal x51 408Bhp engine.
but as I say side by side you will see nothing in it hence to choose a car saying there is a power to weight advantage made me fall off my chair laughing !
but if you choose the 981 Spyder due to on paper power to weight again sad times esp as Porsche conned every one this time quoting the Spyder weight sans AC and Radio.

Seriously, I think we all get the picture of how you view these new cars against some of the older ones, and I respect your views.
From my side I've had a 987.2 Spyder which I think is a great car, but I find the new one more 'fun' to drive. It sounds better, is faster, handles better IMO, and generally I just have a bigger smile on my face in it.
The power to weight ratios, gearing, torque/power graphs etc etc don't really seem to affect my fun in the scheme of things.
Are my findings and views on this any less true or valid than yours ??
PS _ I'm in the keep it camp

That's a great image Andrew and a fine collection of cars - something for every mood and occasion, really very lovely indeed - enjoy in rude health
+1 - stunning and love seeing all those colours together!I am not surprised the Spyder holds its own in that collection either. They really are such fun cars and just get better and better as the miles go on....
