I've got a 718S on test drive for the weekend this weekend and own a 981S so I'll be doing a back to back comparison video on Saturday, probably upload it Saturday night/Sunday. It'll be on:

https://www.facebook.com/Richsgarages/?ref=aymt_ho...

and

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYoSsUdU0UY5J5E0j...

Obviously having both cars side by side lets me compare things there and then. Sound is an obvious one but anything else people would like to see compared specifically on video?

I knocked a crown out yesterday in the gym (don't ask), hopefully they'll fix it today but otherwise you'll have to forgive the gappy smile in the video! ;-)
Hi

If you have the audio equipment, it would be good to get an accurate recording of the 718 with and without the sports exhaust (assuming it has one specced, which is admittedly unlikely given the demo cars that I've seen), including the sound changes between normal and sport etc modes. I've not really found anything on YouTube that demonstrates the difference PSE makes. At a standstill and under load would be great.

Cheers

Try and get the crown fixed otherwise how can we tell if the whistling noise is coming from your mouth or the turbo?

I use GoPros and a decent 4K cam. I'll do my best to get that for you.

What's you requirement? I mean, are you getting rid of the 981S anyway, so you'll be biased toward the 718S?
Or have you blagged a 718S to rubbish it, so you'll be biased toward the 981S?

To be impartial, I would think the tester has to own neither, nor have any interest in owning either.
First I should point out I have many cars from a Ford Model A to an F12 so what a lot of people on PH think of as 'better' doesn't wash with me. I like to own cars because they provide a different experience. For example, I've been asked many times why I own the Boxster when I have a 458 Spider and the answer is, it's a manual and only has 315bhp so you have to work it to get the best from it. Amongst other things.

So I won't be pre judging the 718 as I know it will be different and different is good. Obviously any review is biased based on the reviewers preferences, it's impossible to avoid that. Some guys like fat lasses, I don't. To them a fat lass is good, to me she isn't. Same fat lass, different result.

I'm bored. I've been through my collection and worked out what I'm prepared to change and my Boxster is one of the cars that came up on my shortlist. Obvious first thing to look at is its replacement. If I like it, I'll buy one. If I don't, I won't.

But, even if my opinions aren't of use at least I can provide a video that allows the viewer to hear and see them side by side if nothing else.

I can highly recommend a 981 Spyder - can't comment on the 718 smile

Harris said in not so many words, 'if you're in a GT4 and a 718 comes up behind you, don't bother trying to shake it off'...

Easy performance that sounds crap and is pretty emotionless. Rubbish...

I was simply suggesting that in the Brexit negotiations, the German car manufacturers may not be so keen to 'teach us a lesson' (it has been suggested that the EU want to do this). I am sure they will be working closely with the German government to ensure that selling to UK continues to be on good terms.

Quite. I think Brexit has been a huge and unpleasant reminder of how utterly ignorant even intelligent people can be.

The complete inability of 90% of people to "war game" a negotiation is astonishing.

"They'll give us everything we want coz we are ace" seems to be the prevailing theory.

Back on topic, the 718 is dog st. Someone needs to say it. If you take a car that has one of the best engines in the world and replace it with an engine that is basically the same as that in a Golf, you cannot expect anything but derision.

Variable turbine geometry turbocharger, but more specifically the direct injection design. According to Markus Baumann there was a lot of cross-talk between the 919 Hybrid engine team and their colleagues working on the new turbocharged flat-six and flat-fours.

I noticed even my wife's new BMW X1 2.0 diesel has this!...

0-62 in 7.6secs - not bad for a diesel auto brick on wheels!

Cheers! I was just around there so thought I recognised it but the snow made me think Scotland.

Ha, indeed it is!

Back on topic, I personally quite liked the 718....but do admit, I get a slight stomach ache everytime I think of chopping in my 981 next April for one!

April will be when my warranty runs out.....do I extend for another year or make the change....hmmmmm!!!

Far far cheaper to extend the warranty and if you're happy with your 981.... I know what I would do but then I wouldn't ever consider a 718 on account of its new engine.

I would think prices of the last 981 stuff will remain very strong and starts to outstrip the 718's.

Its another one of those air cooled v water cooled moments. 981 all the way i say and so do most other enthusiasts by the sounds of it.

Hello Fokker,

Yes, I had a 718 Boxster 2.0 4T on a 24 hour test drive a few months ago.

I liked quite a bit about the 718 and wasn't overly shocked by the noise. Though initially I felt the 2.0 was a lot quicker than my car, but when I got back in my 2.7, I soon realised it was just that the performance was easier to extract from the turbo - you have to work at the 2.7.

The end of the day, for the most part a 718 is just a facelift 981.....but like CH says, the 2.7 engine is so much more interesting....makes the car feel exotic and special.

I've owned my 2.7 from brand new and truly love it - it's the longest I've ever kept a car. I could do with a change.....but..........don't like Jags....would soon be bored of an M2 .......hmmmmm

Biggest car mistake I ever made was parting with our much loved 2006 Boxster S. Bought it new, collected it from Zuffenhausen and drove it all over Europe. After four years and a moment of complete stupidity I traded it in for a new Cayman S PDK. My wife was actually in tears when we walked away from it for the last time.

Sounds like you are equally attached to your 2.7 and if I was you I would think long and hard before parting with it.
Our current Boxster GTS is undoubtedly a far superior car in every way but is not part of the family in the same way as that lovely cobalt blue Boxster S was!
