LEG slightly off topic but do you happen to recall what product your golden drive stone is & where it was sourced. From at all please?
The driveway gravel? I don't unfortunately, the builders sourced it and laid it on the drives and my lane. I need to find out though as I could do with topping the lane up. Soon as I do I'll let you know. Sorry.

The stone looks as if it might be Cotswold Stone which I have used in my driveway. It really is very good as it is quite soft and beds down very quickly and evenly so that you don't get that dreadful "gravel creep" when you neeed to keep re levelling it. It is quite bright when new but quickly weathers down to a lovely golden colour.

Cheers guys, got to say to me doesn't look like cotswold gravel more like a golden harder stone. Cotswold tends to dust up really badly & turn to dust over a period of time from my under standing.

Cotswold gravel sounds better when you drive over it. Newer alternative stone is smaller and makes a more lumpy agricultural sound which I find really, really upsetting.

Ahh but a Spyder, one is enough eh. :-)

Thanks. I think I'm improving, relaxing a bit more in front of camera.

Keeps me out of trouble now I'm a dosser. ;-)

I have yes, the wheels were getting a bit tatty so I had them done in black bronze.

Jury is still out on whether it works. The car might need a sill stripe in a matching colour.

I'm just having my GL wheels refinished in gloss black with a diamond cut front at Direct Finish in York.

They're 21 inch, should look superb on the GL which is silver.

As per my earlier posts in this thread I've been out filming a back to back comparison/review of these two today. I'll be editing the video together tomorrow and uploading it.

And no, I didn't think the 718 sounded crap, as you'll see in the video.

I had that exact one for over a week, and the reason it doesn't sound crap is because there isn't any noise. I found it virtually silent, or I was just used to the 981. Anyhow, was mega happy to pickup my 981 GTS and give the 718 back. Enjoy the Burmester sound system, best thing about that car smile

I still think the 981 looks better than the 718, but the 718 is a grower in that department.

I don't own and wont be buying a 718 because as I said in the film, it doesn't offer enough of a change from the 981 except in terms of speed and I have much faster cars than my Boxster already, so the fact that it is quicker than my 981 isn't a selling point for me personally. So, I have no vested interest in what the 718 is like at all. Indeed as a 981 owner one would imagine I might prefer to slate it.

Does it sound different? Absolutely. Is it silent? Absolutely not, just watch the film if you don't believe me. Skip to the last couple of minutes if you can't be bothered to watch it all. Do you have to press on to get that sound? Yup, tootling around at sub 3500 rpm does mean the car will be quiet (and this is possibly what you refer to as silent) but press on and it makes plenty of noise albeit a different one.

Undeniably it is different, whether you like that sound or not is simply a personal thing. I prefer a 981 but that doesn't mean the 718 is bad, it's just different. I found it quite mechanical in terms of sound.

Then again, if you look at My Garage in my profile you'll see I have eclectic and varied tastes in cars and enjoy some that are worlds apart from the others I own.

On the subject of sound, and at risk of self promotion (who? me? Never ;-) ) here is a video comparing some of my Italian cars to some of my German cars. A certain German car doesn't sound great at all on this video but believe me, it's a feckin epic car.

I think the point that is being missed is not the exhaust note although alone, it's the smoothness and whine of the flat six and it's overall feel

So what? Are you trying to get approval? To build an army? Move on please. It has been mentioned so many times that this whole 6 vs 4 discussion is becoming boring. Porsche 718's have a 4 pot. It's happened. You cant change it. Nobody can change it. Move on.

People are coming to the 718 thread because they are interested in the 718. If your not, start a new "Fans of the 6" thread and let owners and prospective owners of the 718 discuss something more interesting.
