OK, I see your point biggrinhehe

For me, a flat 4 turbo in the Boxster/Cayman is a massive step back. They have taken a huge part of the appeal of the platform away for me.

As a side note, I have not heard anyone (journo or forum member) who says that the flat 4 turbo is an improvement over the flat 6 from an emotional perspective.

Well if you're talking from a sound perspective, yes agreed. I've read just a few reviews where the journos have quite liked the sound of the F4T (PH's own Dan Trent being one of them), but I haven't read a single one yet who actually preferred it over the previous NA6. The sound at the top end of the rev range of the 981 is indeed very appealing. I didn't find the 718 S I drove to have as exciting a sound, personally, either at lower or higher revs.

In terms of delivery though, again from an emotional, subjective point of view, journos aren't so one-sided, and I don't think forum members have been either. I myself prefer the slower to quicker non-linear delivery which accompanies a turbo-charger over the straightforward linear delivery of N/A. I find it more thrilling.

Well I prefer it hence I traded in my Cayman 981 for a Boxster 718. I like the 718 more. That's an emotional response, right.

Whether this is due to the roof or nicer leather I don't know. I like the sound of the 718.

I prefer the way the 718 drives. I instantly preferred it after 1 mile of the test drive.

I'm new to Porsche and not steeped in history. I know if I went through an acclimatisation course I'd rip out the water cooling and try and weld some lead to the front bumper but for now I'm just an imposter buying a luxury good.

I'm sure the 718 is better, in the same way a 991 is better than a 997. It is better in the measurable ways; in ways that the majority of buyers will prefer.

I tried finding a manual 991 online over the weekend. Out of the hundreds for sale, how many were manual? 4.

We have to accept that PH does not represent the masses whatsoever. All this moaning about electric steering and turbocharging is a complete non-issue to the vast majority. Frankly, we should be happy that Porsche have listened to the minority in building cars like the GT4, rather than moan that they don't make enough!

I just hope that Porsche realise , as with any sports car manufacturer, your image is based on hard earned reputation. If Porsche continues to move towards the mainstream, after a while you have to start questioning what Porsche stands for, and therefore why you're paying extra.

You'd be looking at July 2017 earliest st OPC East London. I haven't had time to canvas all the dealerships in the world, but I'd assume Porsche have some awareness of their global sales figures hence their sales figures. Feel free to take it up with them if you disagree ??

My local OPC has sold all the Cayman's and Boxster's it has allocated to it this year....
https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=porsche+718&commit=Search

ony 8 cars in total per UK dealer registered how many of these are demos 4 per dealer so 4 cars sold per dealer so far !

OPC not having one to sell does not mean they are selling like hot cakes.

try and get a Macan Turbo, my OPC said they are only getting 3 this year !

I have no axe to grind...I was just reporting the facts as I saw them on the OPC's computer!

If they've only had 8 to sell this year then I suppose it's not a suprise they were sold out. There also seem to be quite a few people on here who've taken delivery though....

Are the Wheel and supsension set ups relatively the same between your Cayman and Boxster ? If not what were and are they?

i've just come back from driving a 981s - I have deposit on a 718s. After driving two 718's in the last month, I had to try the 981 again and I've decided that I definitely prefer the 981.
The sound it makes get my pulse racing, the 718 doesn't - it's a simple as that for me. Now got to have a chat about getting my deposit back so I can move into a different car.

Cayman 20" no PASM

Booster 19" with PASM

The ride comfort is a big factor although the Cayman on 18" winter wheels was great. I've learnt my lesson and I'm unlikely to spec the largest wheel size again.

My CGTS on 20" wheels with PASM rides superbly. I think it's the suspension choice affecting the ride quality more than the larger wheels...

The fact that all allocations for this year have been bought and none are now available to buy means your assertion that "no one is buying 718 Caymans" is patently false.
as I said allocations vs selling like hot cakes is pointless comment. ok people are buying them 4 it seems per dealer ! in the last 5 months.

+1 for the CGTS also. I can't believe that I'm driving down the average UK road on 20" wheels and "rubber band" tyres. It's very impressive.

Just spoke to the sales guy at the OPC about something else so I asked him what availability was like. On the Boxster currently would be looking at April build for a 2.0 and Feb for a 2.5s...slight caveat is that is based/estimated on this years allocation of build slots as they still don't have 2017's. I told him a bloke I work with was interested in one he wasn't jumping down the phone to get the order because he's got a load of unsold cars!

Feb build is nothing, prob cannot even get a Golf that quick these days.

A better question would be to ask how many have you sold :-)

OPC has 26 718 Boxsters listed for sale atm on the web site btw !

..and 106 981 Boxsters which I find amazing given the high demand for the residual-busting 6-cylinder wonder car.

A better question would probably have been "have you got any new/unregistered cars you can sell me". I'll admit Feb by Porsche standards is not a very long lead time.

More interestingly (perhaps) is that they've just been told to expect increased volumes of "sports cars" i.e Boxster/Cayman/911 for 2017.

yes because they have really made the same number of 718s and 981s as of today.... great comparison...

How long have they been making them, and how many are there in existence?

106 base/S/GTS/Spyders over a four year period is very different to 26 718 or 718S models which have only been around for a few months.

I'd be VERY surprised if anyone decided they liked the 718 better after driving one back to back against a 981 smile

After all the 981 is a better car :P

I certainly wouldn't even consider a new Cayman now. Properly ruined in my eyes and I can't understand why any petrol head would buy one personally.

I did exactly that. The 718 is a better car in my opinion smile
