I dealt with Samantha Taylor at Pirelli ( samantha.taylor@pirelli.com ). Spoke over the phone to start with and sent some photos. She was really excellent at corresponding via email and arranging an engineer visit. The tyres were off the car by then as I'd already lost confidence in them (they prefer the tyres ON the car). The rear P-Zeros were worn out at this point (22k) so I'd changed all four to GY F1 A2. The Pirelli engineer examined the fronts at my house, agreed the compound was suspect and that the tyres were half worn. I expected to be offered half their new value but he understood why I'd switched to GY and without any prompt offered to pay the full price of the GYs if I could let him have a receipt for them, which I did.

3-4 weeks later a cheque arrived for the full GY cost.

When you get such great customer service it does encourage you to keep an eye on their products for the future, but I'm firmly off the P-Zero N0 model.
Sounds like great customer service, I bought my car almost 4 weeks ago, highlighted the tyres and got a bit more money knocked off it which I put to two new tyres. However I chose N0 pzeros again, my brother has them on his 3 yr old Cayman with no issues so I suppose not every tyre is affected but I will take note of this thread if any future issues crop up.

I had covered 7000 miles in my Cayman and had the very same problem, cracking in the grooves and on the edges, Porsche service picked this up on the 1st service. Said I needed a full set at £ censored
Tyres needed replacing so I too contacted pirelli who sorted me out with full set of free tyres!
It was explained to me that about 2 - 3 years ago they removed a compound from the manufacturing process and as a result made the tyres more brittle. Happily they have resolved the manufacturing problems, fingers crossed.
Great customer service tho!!! even tho it should have been Porsche chasing this!!!

I spoke to Porsche Reading tyre guy and he said that as you mention, the compound of the N0 is different to the new N1's.

Before buying the car I went with the seller to his local OPC, Porsche Reading, to ask the "tyre guy" about the edge cracking (hadn't noticed the groove cracking then). The tyre guy looked at the fronts and said it was normal, due to the camber angle, and "they all do that sir".

I found the Pirelli tyres very easy to break traction on a 981 Cayman and changed them after 4K miles to Bridgestones which were much better and wore well. I now have Michelin Supersport which are really very good in all conditions on road or track.

So of the 4 tyres that seem suitable for the rear on a 981 Boxster, and 'Porsche approved', namely:

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 265/35 ZR20 95Y - N0
Pirelli Pzero 265/35 ZR20 95Y - N1
Bridgestone Potenza S001 265/35 ZR20 95Y - N0
Michelin Pilot Sport CUP 2 265/35 ZR20 95Y - N0

1. does anyone have a view on ones to avoid (I have heard of people using the Goodyear and Michelin here) ?
2. has anyone put a NON Pzero on the rear, leaving pzero's on the front (as my rear's need replacing but not the fronts)

When was this? I saw him about 3 weeks ago, Colin I think his name is. Quite a straight talking guy I will agree!

He admitted to me that they had had issues with a lot of the Pirelli P Zero's cracking in the grooves and that many customers had been offered free replacements.

I had Pzero on my S and have F1s on the GTS.

Can't comment on the others, but I'd take the F1 every day of the week of those two.

The only traction issues I've had with Pirellis (N0 or N1) have been on loose surfaces where they are both dreadful. To be fair I don't indulge in traffic light grand prix, but I never lose traction without serious provocation. (981S)
