Been trolling through the net to find build numbers for the 981 Caymans.
Can't find much, if anything on how many were contructed and dates.
I have the 2.7 myself but would love to know figures for all the 981 Cayman cars. Mine is a 2014...... Rumour is they built the last ones in late 2014???

Many thanks

Gadgit.

Yes, I've been interested when looking at production to see that Porsche sell very nearly as many Boxster/Cayman as they do if the "iconic 911.

The real eye-opener is to see they build twice as many SUVs as sportscars.

Back to Boxster/Cayman and the best breakdown I found is,

2010
Boxster 7,225
Cayman 5,340

2011
Boxster 7,170
Cayman 5,583

2012
Boxster 9,253
Cayman 2,572

2013
Boxster 15,229
Cayman 10,475

You can easily see the impact of 981 new model launches in 2012/2013, sales having previously tailed off severely in the post 2007 financial crisis. Sales had peaked around 30,000 in 2006.

I wonder what is the highest mileage Cayman gen1 at the moment? They have been aging really fantastic imho, judging by the numbers they are also quite rare. One of my ex neighbours had a black 2.7 2007, he still has that, almost 10 years now gotta ask him the clock! biggrin

Thanks for that everyone.
What about the VIN numbers, would there be any clues in there to indicate when it was built and any relevance to cayman build number....

This is a bit frustrating as rarities are obviously related to numbers built.

There is a Rumour that the final 981s were built at the end of 2014 ???
Keep trying chaps, someone must be able to find out...

130k is quite impressive. My 2006 3.4S one owner car is on 91k now and still seems to be running very nicely on its original engine. I did 20k a year in it as a daily for a couple of years when it was about 4-5 years old, but for the last 4 or so years I've been doing about 6-7k per annum as I alternate it with another car every 3 or 4 weeks.

Hopefully I will keep it until it reaches 100k..

Don't think those numbers are right somehow especially the manual ? I cannot access "veh0160" at present to check but are you sure you are reading it correctly?

That seems about right for the 'S' and matches VEH0160. For the base model it's around 2000 PDK and 575 manual. Adding in the GTS figures of 410 and 135 that gives total 981 models as around:

PDK ~ 3500
Manual ~ 900
Total ~ 4300

Am I reading that right - there are only 4,300 981 Caymans in the UK??? (And my car is one of only 135!!!)

That's what VEH0160 (the DVLA registration figures document) says, yes.

Just to confirm, these are UK only figures.

That's nice to hear. I like being relatively exclusive!

That's 2/135 accounted for.

Given that the PEC have one do we discount that on the grounds it will be totally ragged and possibly even binned before long? Or is that not road registered?

The PEC one is either in the OPC system or will be soon. They get sold as used cars.

That's a pretty rare care by call accounts, then! (Knew they were UK only - I don't care about all those crazy furriners and their Porschas. wink ha ha)

Not that rare compared to others e.g. Manual Black Edition 2.7 Cayman 981 = 8 cars
