I wouldn't worry too much. The sort of retards that are likely to shout abuse at you or damage your car because you have a private plate will already have taken offense at the car being a Porsche.
Lol, I agree. smile

My Ms has the initials JAG, so gets the odd look driving about in her Audi.

I'm having this exact debate at the minute. I have a number of plates on retention, but would be going with my first ever (for mildly sentimental reasons, I think) which is 'A6 XXX' (with XXX being letters and not 'X', obvs!) going on the car.

We've had plates on a number of cars in the past, but not for a few years. I really cannot make up my mind...and worse still, my OH kinda does that female 'scrunch face' thing when I mention it, which means she is not keen.

I think (rightly or wrongly) she feels like we are kinda running the line of appearing to be trying to be 'flash' by having a Porsche in the first place - but perhaps adding the private plate might just tip public perception into the 'knobhead' spectrum.

So I really don't know. For some reason the plate seemed totally acceptable on a Freelander 2 when that was new and a Golf GTI and so on and so on, but this time its perhaps a step too far....

There is a DVLA Auction coming up.

http://www.dvlaauction.co.uk/index.php/live-auctio...

As always, some cheap/naff plates, some obscure, some very nice and tasteful, some expensive, and some potential investments. Invariably, you get what you pay for.

But take the 'guide prices' with a pinch of salt.

And a real tiny pinch at that....

Had a Cayman Design Edition 1 (777 made) with the reg number P777CAY. Perfect for the car but not related to me in any way. I am not a great fan of personalised plates but some say they make a good investment if they can be interpreted in some other way. 'F1' on a Bugatti Veyron is worth more than the car!

Really what's your experience with the guide prices? Do they have reserves?

Would have thought most are snapped up by websites.

RUF911P at £250 looks cheap for anyone with one.

Around where I live private plates are really popular some are quite tacky and others really well thought out, I have them on my two cars as they were relatively cheap.

I spent ages on DVLA's web-site trying out different combinations then a mate sent me a suggestion which I'd never thought about and on my Cayman it looks great so it was a no brainier going for a plate for my daily driver too.

I followed the 'Live Bidding' on one of these - some don't sell, but most go over 'guide' and some for massive amounts.

The general rule seems to be, the shorter the plate (minimum letters/numbers) the better.

fk what people think - buying a Porsche is not flash, it's you buying whatever you want with your money. Equally I don't see what's wrong with a private plate , I know of people that have private plates on their £5k cars and they're not knobhead's it's just what they like.

I've got my eye on a few of those coming up in next month's auction with a view to bagging something 'ageless' for my Mini project, those with a U, X or Y in them (or a combination of all three) can be had relatively cheaply since they're not exactly common as people's initials. I've never bought one before but fancy a punt.

To many, buying a Porsche IS flash and, like it or not, may influence others perception of you. Putting a private plate on it (or have an in-your-face colour) may well re-inforce that impression.

'Potential investments' or, to quote you earlier, 'very good investment': really? Can you explain why? I'm not expecting my two to appreciate any more than they have now. (I don't think they have. And they are both letters plus numbers.)

I don't dispute what people think but for someone to prejudge me based on what I drive / what clothes I wear wear wouldn't bother me personally. Do whatever makes you happy as long as it's not negatively impacting on others is my view.

If someone initially thinks i'm a cock because I have a Porsche or a private plate then i'm no worse off for it.

I'm in two minds about putting a prefix style personalised plate on my early 981c, something ending CAY as a few can be had for not too much money on the DVLA.

I just wondered what the general consensus was on such plates. A bit of fun or does it scream kn0b and attract abuse from random strangers?
With a strategically placed screw you could make it read Gay and you will then attract knobs hehe

Joking aside, it's your car do what you want - joe public will always be jealous over something!

Don't have a problem with private plates, although I couldn't justify spending a lot of money for one. These are mine, just a very few hundred quid for the pair.

IMO "CAY" can look like "GAY", which is fine if you are.

Best to go with your name or initials so you can move to your next car.

My wife (Cat) has this:

Just a shame she didn't like the Jag test drive.
