I stumbled across this video of a variety of Porsche exhaust notes recorded at a US OPC a while back, thought it may be of interest. A variety of 911s and a couple of 718s. Only previous Cayster is the GT4, though.

No you cannot - on a subjective, rather than objective issue, say that someone who takes an opposing view is wrong. Sound appreciation is subjective. If you think a flat plane V8 and I a 2 plane crank sounds better, neither view has more merit - and I can't argue that your view is wrong. If you prefer hard rock and I prefer classical music, it is irrational for me to think you are wrong. I prefer green, you blue - are you wrong?

It may be that a majority view prefers the sound of the 981 to the 718, but so what - fashion in that regard is decidedly fickle.

Interesting - 991.2 S w/ PSE sound fruitier than the one I test drove which was too quiet for my liking. Wonder if it's a side effect of having such a well insulated cabin?

Nothing muddled - simply logically unarguable . And far from counter- productive it actually recognises that there are differences of view which are equally valid. The alternative on more serious issues than cars, is the sort of thing that causes wars - religious, ethnic, cultural. Frankly not sure what cognitive dissonance has to do with whether green is better than blue.

What on earth are you talking about? That statement isn't true at all.

Does anyone here think M2 sounds a lot better? Would you buy one instead of 718?

Yes it does but no I wouldn't. But that's just my view and I'm biased having a 718 on order.

I like the sound of that one. Curious why the Turbo S sounds so feeble in comparison, though.

I don't care what it sounds like, the M2 is an eyesore... in my opinion.
Especially sat next to a 718.

...as most BMWs have been since that fool Chris Bangle came along in the early 90's. After 9 BMW's I struggle to find any that aren't an eyesore nowadays following his legacy.

The comparative M2/718 sound now pales into insignificance against the look of the two cars, let alone the driving experience.

Mind you, some BMW owners do have the sense of humour to take the p*ss out of their awful cars...

They certainly sound a lot better than M4. I've seen a few around lately and they look good in Mineral Grey and Black, quite an aggressive and purposeful design. My biggest complaint is that the interior is essentially the same as a base 1-series. Just a dearth of cheap plastic and generic fittings, doesn't feel like an interior commensurate with the price. Sound aside, 718 beats it on every level. So no, I wouldn't get one instead of a 718. Same with the M4.

Having owned an M235i for two years - and a 135i coupé before that - and many different BMWs prior to that - an M2 was the natural next step up for me.

I did seriously consider it, it is fabulous car, makes a great noise. Wasn't totally sold on the looks though, the front is overly fussy with vanes all over the place...

Besides, it was too similar to the M235i for me, and I wanted a step away from that style and into something a bit more exotic and perhaps less boy-racer, hence my move into a Cayman.

...PLUS, my wife's 2016 X1 tried to kill me, TESLA style, with its intelligent "collision avoidance" system.

Driving down an A road and it saw a truck approaching on the other side and slammed its brakes on full force!

Another reason not to have a BMW.

Christ!

I really abhor these automated driver aids.

The beeping is bad enough - had a huge Nissan X-Trail 4x4 as a hire car on the Scottish borders last weekend, which would beep at me on the odd occasion as a collision avoidance warning - but it didn't override my inputs (or I just wasn't that close ...).

They are not infallible, and in my view should ONLY be a warning and NEVER take control of the vehicle.

Must be terrifying when it happens.

Dunno, I do see what moose is saying. If I think a Zafira is pants, I can understand the point of view that you might think it isn't, but I'll still think my judgement is better than yours. Otherwise I'd hold the same opinion as you.

Basically, you can say all opinions are equally entitled to be held, but not equally valid or correct.

My son and I were flung forward in our seats as the ABS activated. If the truck had been on a collision course, how am I supposed to steer to avoid it if the car has decided to brake?

I phoned BMW. They said they hadn't heard of this before and would investigate. That was two months ago. Nothing. Not bothered?

The default collision warning setting was "maximum" which I've since turned down, but not off. Maybe I should?

I really don't understand why the government is encouraging these "stupid" robot cars to interact with those being driven by humans.
After a few more deaths the decision to have driverless cars will be reversed, so why bother in the first place?

I think you are missing the point - we are/were talking about entirely subjective characteristics, where there is no logical rights and wrongs . There might be perfectly valid and logical arguments as to why a Zafira is pants, but there no logical arguments as to why my preferred choice of blue for a car is "better" than your choice of green.

Moose has changed the word "prefer" I used to "believe". Of course if you "believe" that either colour is INTRINSICALLY better than the other, you would be an idiot and might try to convince someone of the error of their ways - hence my (serious) comments about racial and religious intolerance. And of course you might argue that green is better camouflage than blue - but I doubt that would cut much ice.

Hence I might (and do) much prefer the sound of 981 over a 718, but I cannot sensibly argue that someone who genuinely prefers/likes-as- much the sound of the 718 is wrong - there is no rational basis for doing so.
