Seriously! Just no.

I understand that the 718 is an improvement in everyway over the 981 but for me personally I can't see me ever wanting one.
So it's a bit faster, better midrange and handles that little bit sweeter but, the 718 has not rendered the 981 obsolete. A bad car. I couldn't say goodbye to the F6 for the noise of the F4 and if those 2 vids represent an improvement... jeez. Is that it?
Those who have gone for the 718, they are not wrong. I accept the noise an engine makes is not a priority for everyone, that the low down torque of the turbo appeals more and faster are all factors in their decision to go that way. I'm more than happy revving the engine out to make progress. It puts a smile on my face just starting the thing... I love the noise and drama as it gets high on the range. Passengers really get to feel part of that too. FOR ME... No amount of additional speed or a small finesse in handling could replace that.

Christ on a bicycle, if that's the best aftermarket exhaust people can do to make it sound sexy it's a sad state of affairs.
As always though, digital replication is never able to match reality.

I've not found a single youtube clip of a stock 718 that sounds much like it actually does. In fact I've not managed to find a single online clip that matches the sound of any car I've owned, either on youtube or other sites. Having decent hardware, software, amplification and speakers helps a little, but it is in the recording and digitisation thereof where most of the depth and quality of sound is lost.

So I doubt the clips here do much in the way of true representation of these aftermarket solutions

I would therefore be loath to consider any aftermarket exhaust setup before spending ample time actually in situ to really hear it.

Not that I myself would purchase any aftermarket exhaust for the 718 S with PSE, as I find the stock sound truly ...

With respect, I think you may be hearing what you want to hear to a certain extent. This clip sounds exactly like my recently departed Boxster GTS....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1LhUzL3qdU

....within the bounds of differences as to where the mic is mounted on the car (a bit more/less engine noise component than you get from the driving seat or as a spectator etc), the only difference being the gear changes are a bit slower as it's a manual. I listened to it before I ever drove one, and after I got mine and my opinion never changed. Unless the you tube vids of the 718 have all been made with shocking mics and/or there's some fundamental part of the F4T noise that just can't be picked up on a recording, we've all got a pretty good idea of what a 718 sounds like and whether it's to our particular taste. I happen to think it sounds pretty damn good for an F4T, but just not compared to its NA F6 cousins.

There are roughly five elements in a car which define how enjoyable it is to drive....how it handles/rides, how fast it goes, what the engine response is like/how it delivers the power, what it sounds like.

There's no right or wrong answer....a bit like PDK vs Manual. For a lot of people they'll prefer the way a turbo'd engine delivers its power especially if they've got used to that style of engine if they've had them in other manufacturers cars.

People aren't necessarily buying the 718 despite the noise of the engine ya know. smile

Sound is certainly a priority for me - and I absolutely love the sound it makes. Gruff idle and harsh aural character up the rev range, replete with angry bark on overrun complements the punchy and vigorous nature of this brilliant F4T through and through.

Well put. I'd agree with your five elements.

Indeed, no right or wrong answers here - whether you are moved by the sounds of One Direction or Rachmaninoff, or enjoy the thrills of sky-diving or collecting stamps

I'd also argue if PDK is your thing the new engine is less of an issue than if you want a manual box....there's something about a manual box and the marriage of a great naturally aspirated engine. I love manual gearboxes though not sure I'd spec one with a turbo charged engine.

I actually don't like either of those, but if I was forced I'd choose the first one.

They make it sound even more like a modified F4T, which isn't good IMHO.
Nobody is forcing you my friend wink

Not sure it's possible to be that specific. What turns you on is whatever turns you on. In retrospect I think I've had more fun in underpowered cars that needed to be thrashed to keep up, like a Fiat Panda back in the 80s. Don't think the Panda meets the five criteria.

I'd completely agree with that. I had an early Daihatsu Domino which by most objective judgements left a lot to be desired. But because it was slow (but eager) and dynamically unforgiving it was enormous fun and very rewarding to drive well when you were in the mood. (Bit of a pain when you weren't though)

718S (haven't tried the 718 base) is a bit..
...slower off the line when playing traffic light grand prix (unless you use launch control perhaps?). But that's turbos for you.
...turbo-laggy in the midrange.
...poorer riding with PASM (718 has harder PASM suspension settings than 981).

The less people buy the new 718 because of sneery comments is fine by me.I love driving around in something that isn't coming the other way every 5 minutes and the retro beetle noise just adds to the ownership magic .
I respect the views of previous 6 cylinder owners but please don't look down on us mere 4 cylinder boys as pretend Porsche owners . The DNA is still there in the build quality , performance ,looks and handling . If you dismiss one because of some turbo lag and a growly exhaust note then I think , overall , you are missing out on a great sports car. Thankyou and I hope you enjoy your 240 is, TTSs and secondhand 981s !
I read this twice thinking I must have missed the joke, even noted the date posted. I'm afraid to say adlum that this really doesn't read well. I don't normally add my opinion on PH where I feel I can't offer any help but I have taken exception here.
I'm really glad you enjoy your new car and wouldn't worry what others think of your taste/choice. There really is no need for your last line though; it does you no favours. A bit of banter is all well and good.
PH is steadily declining in manners and gentlemanly conduct though and this is a bit below the belt IMHO.

A good point well made. One of the things I love about my 997 GTS is the manual box (it's got the factory SSk)...sold me the car before I'd made three gear changes and over 30 mph.

my 718 was picked up by the AA yesterday, car in driveway, guy said start her up what does it sound like ?...........on initial start car was loud, throaty, popped a bit, after about 1min settled down to normal drone. He was impressed.......not quite like the Ferrari I picked up yesterday but pretty good.
I didn't buy for sound, just looks, handling, performance & comfort....a bit like my previous girlfriend......but I used to collect stamps !

But the important question is why your 718 needed to be picked up by the AA?

It's just the usual irony present in many threads - writes about 'sneery' comments, asks not to be looked down on and then closes with a sneering, condescending jibe, linking the 981 to two totally different six cylinder cars and implying that a 'secondhand' car is inferior.

There is a defensiveness which is entirely understandable - people have spent a lot of money on 781s and don't like to hear others question their choice. However, attacking other choices just fuels the flames.

There's a third option although I hold little hope it will ever materialise.

Make comments about a car, positive or negative, but don't

  1. make personal insults
  2. use offensive language
  3. confuse personal preference with facts. It's not possible to say a 981 sounds better than a 718. All you can say is I prefer the sound of a 981 to 718
Obviously it's a pipedream that people around here will cut down on offensiveness because quite clearly many of you have got very small penises and these forums are one of the few outlets to vent your frustration smile
