I’ve seen many a post regarding how hardwiring a dash cam will invalidate an OPC warranty, which is something I’d like to avoid.

Ideally I’d plug it in to a switched 12v socket but both sockets on 987.2 CSs are constantly live (as are many other models).

The only solution I have found so far is connecting it to the USB port in the armrest. After some experimentation it only powers up when the car is unlocked, which is ideal, and as a further bonus it powers the cam up for 20 secs when the car is locked and the door handles are pulled.

This of course restricts iPod usage. Otherwise it seems to be the best solution unless anyone has found an alternative?

Cannot see why it would void the warranty.

My OPC fitted mine for me before I took delivery!

Sorry, should have said extended warranty. The claim is that a hardwired dashcam ‘could’ affect the car electrics. Nonsense I know, as all we’re doing is using the fuse box as a power source, but them’s the rules...

Luxury. Back in the day (2008ish) my standalone, non-wired, not connected to anything m-track tracker apparently voided the extended warranty. That was the last time I had work done by an OPC biggrin

I guess if it is Porsche approved you're fine but otherwise it voids warranty, both original or extended. Mine plugs into 12v socket so was fine for my extended warranty.

My OPC (Portsmouth) advised they would not do the extended warranty with a dash cam hard wired so I plugged the power lead into the socket in the passenger foot well. Works fine!

That’s my OPC too smile

Do you leave it plugged in all the time?

It does not void the warranty. At best it causes issues with claiming for an item which “could” be impacted by the installation or with the checks required for extension of warranty.

If it voided the warranty then they would send you away with a warranty claim where your petrol tank is leaking or your air conditioning leaking gas etc just because you have a dash cam fitted. This is of course ludicrous and not true.

Surely just unplug it all if it needs warranty work.

The socket is supposed to shut down 30 minutes after you turn the ignition off, but yes I tend to unplug it - if I remember!

Portsmouth were happy with that. It’s just hard wiring they had an issue with.

Correct, if you’re considering the factory warranty. However, that’s not what this topic is about.

The contract you may volenterily sign for an extended warranty, states “NO MODIFICATIONS OF ANY KIND”
So if you take out the warranty and then make ANY changes, you have breached your contract, which you might consider to then be void.
