Buying a 981, red flags?

Lovely car and prepped well but figured PDK was now for me and the spec on this one is outstanding.
Your car really has it all, spec wise.I went PDK for the first time with my 981, I had my doubts, driven plenty of cars in my time but have always considered autos to be for old gits.
The truth is once you adapt your driving to embrace what they can do there really is no down side to them.
IMO they are a masterpiece of engineering and far from being just an "auto".

Tks . The Spec really wowed me and having never tried PDK in sport I had no idea how great it was. I went PDK for the first time with my 981, I had my doubts, driven plenty of cars in my time but have always considered autos to be for old gits.

Ten year old car and yet feels brand new .
Guess that's why we love and buy Porsche .
Those gear changes are incredible
I think there is more to consider with PDK when it's a used buy like this. With older Porsches and I'm not talking 50 years old but 15 plus you have to start thinking about what's past it's best from a maintenance and renewing perspective. The clutch is an obvious one for manuals. This can cost over a thousand once you add a flywheel into the mix. But there is much more too. The clutch is hydraulic and I've had to renew the hydraulic system on a couple of Porsches. Then to complete the picture the manual lever itself can get sloppy over time and use. Some fit a new shift mechanism and some choose aftermarket solutions. Finally there are the 2 cables which take the shift's movements to the box itself. These also need replacing eventually. So if you add all that lot up you easily have 2500 quids worth of stuff plus fitting. With a PDK obviously none of this will ever need to be done. Now obviously my experience is with the 9x6 platform but this is largely the same on the 9x7 cars. It could of course be different on the 9x1 platform but we can assume some if not all may be similar.

Great write up many tks . I'm not in the least mechanically minded, however I bought my first Porsche ( 930 Turbo targa) at the tender age of 23 over 30 years ago and naturally have learnt what to look out for and check during that time.
That said i tend to look at what's in front of me rather than get on my hands and knees and dig around.
Fair to say I've come unstuck once or twice although one episode was particularly bad with a North Essex so called " specialist" .
Now I'm an old barsteward I'm wanting an easy life with cars.
I intend to keep this car ( for now ) within the OPC network for servicing and warranty but will monitor how that goes.
The OPC warranty, once this one expires, at 2k for 3 years looks attractive although of course servicing has to be done by the OPC.
Reassuring to know the PDK box is pretty robust.
Sorry OP we have hijacked your thread.
Might be easier I start a new one

The one think i will need installed is CarPlay although I don't want to change the original unit .
Any clues on this ?

Try it in Sport Plus too with a full bore red line up-shift. I don't know how it works mechanically, but the PDK box gives you more of a slam in the back during up-shifts..

Re CarPlay there are a few kits out there, basically opening the PCM adding a board and plug in I'm not in the least mechanically minded, however I bought my first Porsche ( 930 Turbo targa) at the tender age of 23 over 30 years ago and naturally have learnt what to look out for and check during that time.

ribbon cables. It is DIY-able. I’ve considered for my 981 GT4 but wouldn’t fancy removing the unit and damaging/marking something in the process. The actual job looks relatively easy though.
There a PH threat on the subject and someone who took the plunge.

The only slight issue is if you have the extended warranty and you open up the PCM that is the end of your PCM warranty.ribbon cables. It is DIY-able. Actually doing it looks easy enough.

Sounds like I can get it installed without disturbing the OEM screen

Ah good point tks. Actually doing it looks easy enough.
I guess I could find a stand alone unit although it'll look ugly on the dash. Also I won't be wanting to permanently fix a new unit above the PCM.
I don't doubt my local OPC could add a pcm unit but of course for a frightening amount!!

A grill mount, iPhone & Waze does the job. T’internet tells me it’s now possible to retrofit PCM 4 from the 718 to the 981 but I’m not fussed enough about the tech on offer tbh.

The possible warranty issue is why I haven’t pursued adding CarPlay though it would be nice to have. My PCM doesn’t have Nav, has the button though…

Mine has DAB, Bluetooth, Jukebox, Phone and Nav that has worked faultlessly in UK, France, Switzerland and Italy so far.A grill mount, iPhone & Waze does the job. T’internet tells me it’s now possible to retrofit PCM 4 from the 718 to the 981 but I’m not fussed enough about the tech on offer tbh.
So whilst the addition of CarPlay would be welcome I can live without it.

You cannot upgrade to a PCM4 IN a 981 if you have Bose (or I think Burmeister) audio as the PCM output / amp input is in MOST25 with the PCM3.1, but MOST150 in the PCM4.elan362 said:

Ah tks . I do have Bose. More research needed . I was told at Harbour cars for around £750 there is a fit but I need to find out a little more.
I've gotten used to CarPlay and will especially miss not having the ability to voice text and use Spotify .

Yup . I'm a fan of the 981 platform having had a 981 GT4 and various other cars .
Loving open top motoring now and this fits the bill perfectly.
Hopefully my car for a long time.
Is this your retirement car then?Loving open top motoring now and this fits the bill perfectly.
Hopefully my car for a long time.
My Cayman will probably be my last personal car until then.
