I believe that any 16v head will require enough work to justify being removed, which will entail the fitting of a new head gasket.

Its hardly a big job, after all. Try doing a 951!

Oli, I was not necessarily saying all this as an ideal point of view, but would make sense for someone who wants one of these cars mechanically sound as a daily driver that is going to rack up 10k+ miles per year and who can't really be bothered about cosmetic aspects. For an efficient commuter you obviously don't need the best suspension around, but you still need an engine in good nick.

From my experience, corroded HGF is down to old/poor/no coolant. Even longlife has a limited life & it then doesn't get changed its anti-corrosive additives will be zero. If people aren't sharp when it starts to go then eroded heads/blocks & complete HGF are on the cards. At 120K I'd be doing a full head overhaul, recut seats & refaced valves, possibly new valve springs, although if they are doubles then a broken one will just normally give a misfire.
