That's not bad if it's built nicely. Hard to see the welds on the photo as they're under the carpet!

Do you think those top mounts are the Eastern Bloc made ones that eBay chancers are importing?

Just had a reply from those dudes.

Topmounts - £150 for a pair and they're in stock.

Rear brace & wheel dooberry - £125 for weld in item with single harness eye per side £135, double per side (as per pic above) £155. Optional tie strap for wheel is £40.

Sump and fuel pump guard £250 and £95 respectively.

An update here because, as usual, things are starting to get out of hand smile

I bought a pallet load of stuff. And I do mean a pallet load. Here it is delivered to Talkwrench's workshop. I've blanked out his eyes so he looks like Andy McNab off of the SAS.

Inside the pallet is stuff.

That stuff is, amongst other things:

An complete 80,000 mile 2.5 engine with all ancillaries
A lightweight composite front bumper
3 x fuel pressure regulators
2 x fuel rails
3 x AFMs
2 x Throttle Bodies
2 x exhaust manifolds
1 x intake manifold
Misc other bits

Michael is about to order me my own special engine prep workstation for the workshop and we're going to do something special. At present the general idea is:

Head gas flowed and ported
Bigger valves and uprated springs
Lightweight pistons and conrods
Lairy high lift cam and associate gubbins
Crank shaved, lightened and reprofiled
Exhaust ported
Throttle body ported
Lightweight flywheel
Bespoke 4 branch manifold
Baffled sump

This is all going to be done off the car so all the above work will continue and we'll hopefully drop this in at some point in the summer and see what it chucks out. I'm obviously hoping for 8 million bhp.

The bottom pair are wired directly with an in line fuse. When rallying in daytime I'll just tape over them and remove the fuse.

Night rallying and I tape over the middle pair so the bottom set (crazy bright Hellas) can be used.

Never had a problem with scruts.

Michael (Talkwrench) sent me a photo from the workshop of the first few bits that have been blasted before some experimentation.

The engine holder thingummybob has arrived too so I really need to clear some time to get over and start taking the main block apart.

Indeed. Call me Mr. Porter and call the porter to bring me a pint of porter while I do some porting.

Quick update on this as I'm over at the workshop again this morning for some engine tinkering.

I broke down the engine last week and organised all of the parts that are going to be fiddled with.

Delighted to see that the piston faces and bores are in great shape. I did have to clear out a bunch of munched up wheat from the chambers that I assume was from some particularly mad pot-holing mice.

Then I organised all of the bits I got in the pallet. The list goes on and on but there is some great stuff there for modifying.

This morning I'm hoping to break down the bottom end and remove all the ancillaries. Also have a look at the cam. I'll be replacing that with something gnarly but if it's in good shape I'll clean it up and stick it in the stores for the other road engine along with these pistons, rods etc.

I feel like a real mechanic today having done mechanicky stuff under the expert tutelage of Michael.

Stripped down the bottom end by removing both balance shafts, sump and auxiliaries.

We're going to delete the balance shafts but that's not as simple as first thought as they're fed with oil through the housings. This will mean permanently sealing those oil ways but Michael seemed pretty laissez faire about it so, you know, whatevs.

Michael was also surprised at the sheer damned size of the crank. I have to admit to even my amateur eyes it is quite a piece of kit. It'll be interesting to see just what can be shaved from it.

So far pretty much everything about this engine is spanking. I bought it as a '80,000 mile engine' and I can quite believe it. Everything important is looking tickety boo.

Lots and lots and lots of media blasting about to happen, plus I've got to go back and remove the ladder and crank (and presumably all the other engine bits like pistons and rods and stuff). Aiming to do that on Thursday morning so the bare bottom end can be blasted. Then the phoenix from the ashes will rise, mightier than ever. Probably.

Delete the balance shafts and lighten the crank and you'll be rebuilding it again before too long.
Why's that then?

For a road engine expected to do X,000 with just a filter and fluid change I'd agree. But this isn't going to be one of those wink

Gents, I sincerely appreciate the comments on this, but...

This engine isn't being built by a retard (me) in his shed. It'll be the work of a bloke who knows more about this kind of stuff than all of us here put together, cubed.

When I say I might 'lighten and knife edge the crank' firstly I don't mean 'I' and secondly I don't mean 'I'll do the work, AND NOTHING ELSE, then nail it back together and rev it to 8k around Oulton.'

Yes, this kind of stuff requires finesse, in depth knowledge and a general understanding of fine tolerance engineering. Rest assured that is in hand.

As for bracing the oil pickup. Yes, good point. It looks like about 5 minutes work and will be addressed.

This project is total folly. As Simon said above I may see 185bhp after spending £Xk. That's fine, I enjoy doing it and what will be will be.

I'm also learning a lot, something equally as important to me. I've never done anything like this before so playing a part in doing the monkey spanner work makes me happy. End of.

If it sts itself on the first outing I'll shrug, walk home and have a cup of tea. This is a hobby after all, not life and death.

Completed the last bit of breaking down the block today. So far everything in this engine has been utterly spanking and I'm very pleased with it indeed. The bores are perfect, in fact everything is damned impressive for an 80,000 mile 33 year old engine. Michael said it must havereally been looked after all through its life.

Now begins the massive clean up job. Everything will be getting media blasted and cleaned up before reassembly. Got quite a shopping list building now for a whole host of bearings, bits & bobs.

Well we have some movement as there is some ramp availability at Talkwrench's gaff next week so it's going in for a 2 week love in before FoS.

In no particular order that will include:

Rear wheel bearings
New steering u/j
Topmounts rebuilt
Rear Bilsteins on
Oil catch can fitted
New speedo cable with Brantz in line sensor
Wishbone ball joints replaced

Think that's about it for this trip. I've also just bought a rare factory LSD for the car so that will get rebuilt along side the new competition engine and we'll get all that done some time before the end of summer.

I've also just specked up some Yokohama A032R tyres for the gold Teledials. Should look a bit swank.

Feels great to be back on with it after a break. Can't wait to get it back and out on the road.

Update as the car is going in to Michael tomorrow for some love. Not a minute too soon either as FoS is looming and I've also decided that what I really need is yet another mind bogglingly expensive hobby - so I'm going to start hillclimbing in the Porsche too thumbup

The competition engine is now back to pretty much new thanks to the magic of air and a miscellany of media. I've decided, due to a number of factors, that this quick engine will be done and dusted by the end of summer and we're not rushing to get it done sooner. I've also picked up a LSD and another gearbox so those together with a new clutch and lightened flywheel will go in at autumn some time.

Really can't wait to get it back in action. Have just ordered some nice sticky tyres for the wheels too.

Another update as the car has been dropped with Talkwrench today (yay) but there is an issue (booo).

First the good.

All the parts are together so sort the suspension, steering and misc other little niggles after last season's rather punishing rally schedule. Also the competition engine blasting is pretty much there. The sump is now immaculate too.

The bad news is that the head off the competition engine has been blasted and is now just a large paperweight. The reason is, amazingly, mouse piss.

When I first got the engine apart there was partially eaten/digested corn and mouse st in the bores. This hasn't affected the pistons or bores but has eaten into the soft alloy of the head. It's not pretty and would be utterly futile to reuse. A shame really.

It won't slow down this part of the rebuild as the new engine wasn't due to go in until the end of summer anyway. A bit of a bummer though.

Still, never mind. Feels great to be on with this now. Can't wait to get it back in a couple of weeks for some hooliganism. I'll be over there for a couple of days before then to do some bits myself while Michael does the important stuff.
