Gents, I sincerely appreciate the comments on this, but...

This engine isn't being built by a retard (me) in his shed. It'll be the work of a bloke who knows more about this kind of stuff than all of us here put together, cubed.

When I say I might 'lighten and knife edge the crank' firstly I don't mean 'I' and secondly I don't mean 'I'll do the work, AND NOTHING ELSE, then nail it back together and rev it to 8k around Oulton.'

Yes, this kind of stuff requires finesse, in depth knowledge and a general understanding of fine tolerance engineering. Rest assured that is in hand.

As for bracing the oil pickup. Yes, good point. It looks like about 5 minutes work and will be addressed.

This project is total folly. As Simon said above I may see 185bhp after spending £Xk. That's fine, I enjoy doing it and what will be will be.

I'm also learning a lot, something equally as important to me. I've never done anything like this before so playing a part in doing the monkey spanner work makes me happy. End of.

If it sts itself on the first outing I'll shrug, walk home and have a cup of tea. This is a hobby after all, not life and death.

If the previous comments were aimed at Andy then just ignore the above post wink

Definitely worth bracing the oil pickup while it's out.. Quick job if you have the skills (not so quick to do it on the car..)

The oil pipe in the race car is not braced and no issues so far. Of course, it could all go wrong next time. This wasn't a decision taken lightly, but everything I read from US spec racing indicated that it was a far lower risk at race car revs.

Andy, Dave C's & Ed H's cars both suffered pickup pipe failure. Both people you know and neither have run without balance shafts.

Completed the last bit of breaking down the block today. So far everything in this engine has been utterly spanking and I'm very pleased with it indeed. The bores are perfect, in fact everything is damned impressive for an 80,000 mile 33 year old engine. Michael said it must havereally been looked after all through its life.

Now begins the massive clean up job. Everything will be getting media blasted and cleaned up before reassembly. Got quite a shopping list building now for a whole host of bearings, bits & bobs.

Well we have some movement as there is some ramp availability at Talkwrench's gaff next week so it's going in for a 2 week love in before FoS.

In no particular order that will include:

Rear wheel bearings
New steering u/j
Topmounts rebuilt
Rear Bilsteins on
Oil catch can fitted
New speedo cable with Brantz in line sensor
Wishbone ball joints replaced

Think that's about it for this trip. I've also just bought a rare factory LSD for the car so that will get rebuilt along side the new competition engine and we'll get all that done some time before the end of summer.

I've also just specked up some Yokohama A032R tyres for the gold Teledials. Should look a bit swank.

Feels great to be back on with it after a break. Can't wait to get it back and out on the road.

Update as the car is going in to Michael tomorrow for some love. Not a minute too soon either as FoS is looming and I've also decided that what I really need is yet another mind bogglingly expensive hobby - so I'm going to start hillclimbing in the Porsche too thumbup

The competition engine is now back to pretty much new thanks to the magic of air and a miscellany of media. I've decided, due to a number of factors, that this quick engine will be done and dusted by the end of summer and we're not rushing to get it done sooner. I've also picked up a LSD and another gearbox so those together with a new clutch and lightened flywheel will go in at autumn some time.

Really can't wait to get it back in action. Have just ordered some nice sticky tyres for the wheels too.

Excellent update Ben! Would you like a set of front springs to go with that lot? They're just about to come off the car... wink

Another update as the car has been dropped with Talkwrench today (yay) but there is an issue (booo).

First the good.

All the parts are together so sort the suspension, steering and misc other little niggles after last season's rather punishing rally schedule. Also the competition engine blasting is pretty much there. The sump is now immaculate too.

The bad news is that the head off the competition engine has been blasted and is now just a large paperweight. The reason is, amazingly, mouse piss.

When I first got the engine apart there was partially eaten/digested corn and mouse st in the bores. This hasn't affected the pistons or bores but has eaten into the soft alloy of the head. It's not pretty and would be utterly futile to reuse. A shame really.

It won't slow down this part of the rebuild as the new engine wasn't due to go in until the end of summer anyway. A bit of a bummer though.

Still, never mind. Feels great to be on with this now. Can't wait to get it back in a couple of weeks for some hooliganism. I'll be over there for a couple of days before then to do some bits myself while Michael does the important stuff.

Bugger! I wonder if you're the first ever car enthusiast to ever suffer a wrecked engine component (electrical hardware excluded) as a result of mice!?..

The Weltmeister springs we discussed on TIIPEC wink will whip them off tonight and will drop you a line on there.

Ah yes, I recall.

TBH unless they're a bit of a bargain I'll probably wait. Having just splurged on a LSD and now needing to buy a new head funds are stretched.

No worries! I know the feeling well, I've been busy building up those coilovers and have just 'invested' in a brand new set of fuel lines from an OPC and as you can imagine that wasn't cheap!

I was busy with something else in the end last night, but when they're off I'll drop you a line just in case before listing them to the masses.

Hope the prep goes well for FoS! Although not quite as prestigious, I've managed to bag a place at the CPoP in the 951 so the rush is now on to get the car ready in time...

Had a lovely day pottering at the workshop today. I sorted out the rear deck with some NVH stuff and have asked the wife to whip me up a nice lightweight carpet set from acoustic cloth. Should look better than the bare metal, will cut out some of the boominess but weigh in at next to nothing.

Michael gave the new wheels a lick of paint. He hates them I think but I think they're well swank. Going to look great with the A048s on.

Work starts on front end tomorrow. Should be good.

Had you consider coachtrimmer's carpet Ben? Its the stuff that they trim the walls in mini bus conversions with. Looks like carpet but very thin and light.

I hadn't, until now!. Cheers, will have a look at what's available.

What I really want is a nice open weave and quite hard wearing, but light - a la Singer.

It has a clear backing too which is particularly amenable to heat forming. I cant show you a picture as all that I have is rolled up and tucked away in my loft.
