Crazytalk saying it's a rubbish engine, it just isn't. A little clattery I suppose but otherwise strong as hell in the midrange. why would you say it's rubbish? did I miss something?
But yeah I thought just this one was a four seater, assumed it was optional. This puts me out of the frame given I have three kids.
Well on the way back in a few mins, much as I like the panamera I'm looking forward to taking the beast home again.
Does it rev to about 7000rpm? Does it scream like a banshee? Does it produce more horse power than torque? Does it accelerate like a rocket? But yeah I thought just this one was a four seater, assumed it was optional. This puts me out of the frame given I have three kids.

The diesel doesn't have any of these qualities all of which are important in a performance car, therefore it's a rubbish engine.
Who spends £70k on a performance car with a diesel engine anyway.
Panamera will be my nexct car - prob a hybrid due to CC tax, but at present I have a lowly 535d, which does 0-60 in 5.3, 50mpg on a run and has recently been on the autobahn at a satnav confirmed 168mph.
The Panamera Diesel engine is superior even to this.
You are wrong.
The Panamera diesel is rubbish, as is your 535D and every other diesel for that matter.
Err no offence of course...

I am well aware of the aural limitations of my current car, coming out of an RS4 Avant of course I am!
However, to make a statement like the above is just trolling.
0-60 in 5.3
50mpg
168 mph
The numbers speak for themselves. Oh and here it is strolling at 4500 rpm a few mph short of 170mph.
Sh 1t really........ It's not even breaking a sweat the damn thing. And it couldn't even swallow a whole tank of diesel going from Dover to the Nurburgring. Oh, and back again.

Again, yawn, nobody cares about on paper figures. That's the problem with you diesel owners, you just don't get it.
I've been up the hill at Goodwood in a diesel panny, and my impressions from this have drawn me to the conclusion that you talk like, what is commonly known as, a tt.PGM said:
I do a lot of European touring in mine with kids and dog quickly and in total comfort whist still enjoying myself, that's the point.
Works well on twisties with good handling, 8 speed box and loads of torque too.
Yeah I forgot, petrols don't work on the continent. Works well on twisties with good handling, 8 speed box and loads of torque too.

I have a tiny bit of sympathy for Pete's view.
Given the other costs of running the car, mpg isn't really important. And it's shame not to have the nicest engine that you can.
(That said, if you're going for an 8-speed slusher and the engine is FI...then petrol and diesel won't actually be much different. I'm persuading myself that Pete is actually an idiot after all )

Any of the petrol engines are a good choice, and they have the option of being fitted with PDK if thats your preference - the diesels have a regular torque converter and you will find imperfections with it.Given the other costs of running the car, mpg isn't really important. If you choose to you can really hustle a petrol Panamera along and you'll have fun along the way, it's a Porsche after all.
With the diesel you can't, the gearbox isnt suitable, the engine isn't happy doing it and if its anything other than warm tarmac you'll be spinning most of the power away.
Given you can have a 100 litre fuel tank, the range argument of the diesel is invalid. The only reason you'd buy the diesel is because you can't afford the petrol, and if performance isn't your thing then why are you buying a Porsche.
Also the earlier models, 250bhp, LOL.

Oh. If the petrol comes with PDK and the diesel with a slusher, then the petrol is still worth having. PDK is a million miles better than even the best ZF 8 speed boxes in my experience. Unless you drive to work on a race track, the ZF just is fine. Given you can have a 100 litre fuel tank, the range argument of the diesel is invalid.
I've had Porsches with both, and I think I actually prefer the ZF, it's less manic and doesn't hesitate from a stand in traffic like the pdk does.
I'll skip on replying to the dry tarmac and range statements.
Funny though...

I found the diesel very woolly to drive and as mentioned above, its lack of traction on anything other than a perfect surface was really quite poor. It was admittedly a very smooth drive but not at all involving. It still felt fractionally more special than a 7 series for example or an A7/A8, which I guess are the closest competitors in terms of size, price, quality etc. If your heart is set on a large luxurious diesel saloon/hatch, the Panamera makes a reasonable case for itself but is not what I would call a drivers car; it's a diesel luxo barge and nothing more.
The performance was fine, pretty much what I expected and it suited the car. The hybrid I drove was much the same.
The GTS is still a big, heavy barge but offers much more interaction than the diesel, which I'm sure the petrol engines do in general. The tighter suspension, the PDK gearbox and throttle response help engage the driver and the trick exhaust system (on the GTS at least) make it quite enjoyable to drive the car harder and use the rev range. It's not quite as entertaining as my E63 biturbo was, but it's a better car overall and much more entertaining than an Audi S7/S8 or a BMW 750i. Whilst the Panamera GTS is not a Porsche for purists, it's more distinctive than its rivals, which isn't something I really felt about the diesel.
Range wise, the least I've got from a tank was 300 or so miles and the best was just under 600 miles from something like 90 litres.
As far as I can tell, people buy the Panamera diesel because, a) they're sucked in by the brand rather than the driving experience, or b) because their mileage suggests having a diesel might be more prudent, or c) they want something a bit different to the competition and don't want to drive around in an upmarket taxi (7 series, A8 etc). All similar arguments for buying a Cayenne or even a Maser Quattroporte I expect. As ORD said above, it's a shame not to have the best engine you can, particularly on an expensive car, for which running costs between the two would be negligible.
