The Cups look better granted however the extra weight is very noticeable, so for all you
guys running Cups you are ruining the natural feel of your car, get the D90S back on
(correct ones) 245 45 16s on the rear and 205 50 to the front, have it properly tracked
and camber set, and boy, its a different car.

P.S. I know the GTS runs Cups, however they are real Porsche items, a lot of copy
Cups going about, when you weigh them you see the difference....
The 928 never had 205s on the front. Perhaps you meant 225?

Cups look good but only on the GTS in my opinion. The 928 is a very fussy car when it comes to wheels - the original teledials in 18" would be perfect. As a matter of fact, there is a project on Rennlist to offer Teledials in 18" with the correct size and offset. OZ Racing for Strosek 18" pepper-pots also look stunning, but are rarer than rare...

I found that with the correct D90s the car was nimble and agile, light on its toes and turns
on a sixpence..
Agree with this. I ditched the 18's and managed to find the correct set of D90's. There's a good reason why the GT was set up with these and who am I to disagree with the Porsche development team smile

So Porsche 928 is 40 shortly and also rumours of a new 928 type model regardless
of what it wil lbe called it will have a nod to the 928 model, may be 929?
I think what we are seeing at the moment is the begining of the best 928 models
somersaulting in value.
Prices are definitely on the move, especially in silver..

First time on the PH forum and hoping someone can help.

After a few 911's I recently bought a 1989 928 s4 as a third car. Basically a whim as I always wanted one as a kid! Currently I am driving it more than my more modern cars as it is such a good drive.

My issue is I cannot work out the exact model. It is for all purposes an S4 auto with the digital dash. The problem is however the rear panel and lights. They are definitely original but instead of the usual S4 it is the same rear as a GTS with reflective section. The reflector has porsche written in it and above it vinyl type lettering says 928 S4.

I have ruled out SE, GT and GTS but wonder if anyone else has any ideas of why it is an S4 with a GTS rear end. It is the only one I have seen like it.

It's an 89 S4 auto with a replacement rear panel; the GTS panel with the space for the reflective strip was available after the standard S4 PU had been discontinued, so anyone requiring a brand new rear during that period got the GTS version (or had to settle for a secondhand one if they wanted originality).

Mine having made a 2500km round trip to a wedding in the Czech Republic, at the museum in 2013. Heater was stuck on, drank oil as fast as fuel, and decided to pack up completely in Dijon but what an experience.

People on the motorway waved and tooted, parked in the Dorint Hotel next to the ring and surrounded by real exotica ( 3 McLarens etc) , it was to mine that people gravitated.

I was even pulled over by an unmarked Merc with non uniform police ( carrying guns & I have to admit I cra**ed myself a bit at this) only to be told that they just wanted to look at the car!! wink

Superb machines, but don't ever buy at the bottom and expect to run on a shoestring. I always maintained that even if it turned out to be a lemon I would park it outside my lounge window and just look at it!! cool

Lovely look car, shame you had a rare and serious issue, but glad you had a memorable trip smile
I literally haven't had to top up the oil in 2 years with the S4. On the GT have topped up with 1 litre probably due to a couple of track days.
Bombproof cars, if properly maintained by previous owners.

A Countach stored in identical environment would've been in far worse condition. There is always a financial point of no return when restoring these supercars, unless a blank chequebook magically appears.
What happened to this one ?

Maybe it's the one from risky business...

What did happen to it? Was this the one that had a resto thread?

Wow, that looks absolutely stunning, you will have to bring it down to the Thoresby classic car show in a couple of weeks time.

Congratulations, sounds like all the hard work paid off - funnily enough I changed the front tyres on my 928 this year.

As I mentioned previously, if you get the chance for drive out, bring it down to the Thoresby show this Bank Holiday Monday 31st August 2015, address is Thoresby Park, Ollerton, Newark, Nottinghamshire NG22 9EP. For further info visit: http://www.classicshows.org/component/ohanah/43rd-...

I took quite a few pics at the Thoresby show a few years ago when it was dry and sunny. Was a brilliant day out with hundreds and hundreds of cars of all varieties to drool over: https://www.flickr.com/photos/100047767@N07/albums...

Totally agree with what you have said, the manual does feel more alive, whilst the auto is just plain lazy when you want it to be, but it needs to be remembered that the auto is no slouch, if you select '3' in auto at standstill it will quite happily select 1st gear, spin the rear wheels, and charge right up to 121mph if driven in anger before 4th gear needs to selected, my first 928 S4 which I purchased back in the early 1990s used to change up at 60 for 1st gear, 90 for 2nd gear, and 121 for 3rd gear, and bearing in mind autos tend to pull off in 2nd gear if left in 'D' means that 928s can pull away from standstill to 90mph with no gear-change which tends to crush everything in their path.

I actually chased an early manual 928 S2 back in the 1980s along the main road on my super-bike which at that time was king of the road, and I have to say the 928 sounded awesome as it went through the gears, and though the bike was faster to 100mph I chose not to overtake it because it sounded just so good, and it was a wise decision because when this thing pulled off the main road onto the side-road it was quite astonishing to watch it accelerate through the corners whilst I was hanging on for dear life. Absolutely stunning, awesome... it was just sensational...

Ought to mention I'm a far more experienced and patient driver nowadays so haven't actually tried these redline antics with my current 928 S4, plus there are far too many taxpayer funded safety [tax revenue?] camera jobsworths looking to justify their parasitic existence, which rather ruins the whole driving experience.
we had a Murcielago behind us last week, and when we stopped the driver commented how awesome the 928 sounded.

Digging around some literature I found this snippet from Tony Dron:

Then the 928 GT came out, a sharp and focused driver's car with 330bhp, 171mph top speed and, crucially, a five-speed manual gearbox and sports suspension. To quote Porsche racer and journalist Tony Dron: "The 928 GT was set up to satisfy those who liked to drive hard, yet still not scare the pants off them... a true driver's car with bags of character. A strong, growling beast, there really is something rather grand and magnificent about it."

There is something truly unique about the GT. Slurring through those gears one feels
very empowered, and that sound......The way the vehicle shifts its weight as it
sets up for bends and the engagament with the steering when you turn in,
couple this with the extra weight to the pedals and the feeling of one whole solid
piece being directed as one. Truly is a vehicle that very few have properly
experienced, and the Auto is just a blunted version of what the car always should be,
it has its place of course and is a superb GT only softer.
