Just returned from a fortnight in France (without dogs!)& the car was it's usual comfortable & quick self. On the way home it threw it down with rain & the wipers stated making "graunchy" noises (not the blades, but from the motor or mechanism). It did this a few years ago, but , on the principle of "it'll get better or worse etc", it went away.
No doubt the wiper assembly is a PIA to get at as I expect it was fitted early in the assembly process. Anyone have any hints or suggestions how to get at the motor and/or linkage. After the holiday I don't feel like sending it in for a doubtless expensive investigation.

The mechanism went on my 968, which was expensive at the garage but not hugely so. On the 968 if the linkage breaks but the motor keeps working, the passenger wiper continues to run - the driver's stops - challenging. Keep some rainex or newspaper in your car just in case (if the wipers pack up rub the windscreen with newspaper - the printer's ink dispels the droplets making visibility a bit better).

The balljoint at the bottom of the wiper shaft often has its grease washed out by rain. Look at the back of your engine bay under the plastic plenum and keep the balljoint regulary greased for a long life

Had a look & I will grease up the joints I can see. The plastic plenum comes free from the engine compartment seal easily enough, but to release it at the screen end it looks as if I have to remove the wiper arms & spindle nuts? I don't fancy just bending it up as it feels pretty brittle!
I'll keep you posted!

The part costs about £8 from your local OPC...

I seem to remember it being more for the bits (linkage and a plastic thing the linkage attached to) but you may well be right. It was more than five years ago.

Hi Davidh, the 944 wiper linkage is no longer available, I had same issue with an S2 for a customer and I ended up fitting the 968 system, with the correct spacers/rubbers and it worked ok, If your car has new shape dash, then you have to remove the heater motor to get linkage frame out.
Please make sure motor is in correct position when reattaching the arms, otherwise it goes all over the place, mark position of main link on the motor and just try and get it back to same.

Thanks for the advice all of you. Needless to say I have done nothing...the sun has shone & you cannot beat procrastination!
Just got a pair of bonnet gas struts to stop having to use a broom handle, so I'll check out the link then!
