My mate had an early 4.5 v8 for a few years until about 3 years ago. He loved it. Still goes on about it whenever we talk cars. He even bought newer shape diesel version but didn't like it quite as much. Although still says both very good cars. He keeps trying to push me towards 4.8 version as he thinks engine slightly better. Ones we discuss priced more like 15k. His mate has had 2 from new and has test driven different suspension options and claims simple steel springs drive better than air so don't think you're skimping with steel.
I mentioned this thread to my mate yesterday. He reiterated again that he loved both his Cayennes. He sold his 2007 v8 as it was costing him around 700 per month in road tax, insurance and fuel. He only got 5000 for it. A couple of things broke in close succession which put him off.

As always with these things once you start adding up costs then the car has to go. He says the newer shape diesel with 8 speed auto was a better car. The interior quality was much improved.

He believes bore score is only an issue on the earlier cars of pre 2005.

Totally depends upon mileage and how the previous owners have looked after them.

I bought a 2007/8 V8S 4+ years ago for ~£10k ~90k miles. The reason I chose it was because it was a one owner car that still had 2 years OPC warranty.

Under warranty it had the propshaft replaced (they all do at <100k) some sensors, a bit of engine loom and a couple of switches. The 2 year's worth of OPC warranty and servicing cost ~£2.5k. Was it worth? Definitely for peace of mind (it's the wife's/kids battle wagon) but I don't know how much the work would have cost without the warranty.

It's now done ~136k and I recently replaced all the discs/pads/sensors for <£500. Fitted a new battery last week as it was getting a bit tired. Haven't spent anything else on it in 4 years other than tyres (it appears to be a magnet for nails and screws - I've had more punctures in this car than every other car in 30 years) and service items. Oh yeah and fuel. Lots of fuel. It needs a new thermostat and due another service soon. I have recently bought an iCarsoft POR V3 scanner and the only issue that it's showing is the aforementioned thermostat.

Plan to run it into the ground for another 3 years (depending on whether it has a catastrophically expensive failure before then) as it's not worth much more than £5-6k I expect. But better the devil you know when it comes to second hand cars.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. So much car for the money if you get a good one.

YMMV thumbup

Oh yeah, get one that is properly specced up: V8, Air Suspension, extended leather, BOSE, heated seats, multifunction wheel etc. If you get a V6 or diesel, you may as well just buy a Toureg.
