I have been thinking about investing in some classic pork, and feel the 2.4s is a good punt? What do you all think?

No, you've missed the boat by about 18 months and they've already shot up in value. How can it be an investment ? If anything chances are they may drop a little if the bursting bubble theory is to be believed.

The more threads that include the word 'investment' leads me to think we might be nearer to the bubble deflation than not.

Funny how everybody starts thinking about investment when the prices really start to go up, I agree with the other post after a big rise (relatively speaking) can't see much more of a rise, maybe stabilise, but I would say they are a hold or sell.....

buy one because you want one & enjoy the back to basics proper 911 drive etc ... not as an investment.

I'm lucky to have a 2.4S and it's still my favorite drive of all the Porsches I've owned & sampled over the years . They ( old porkers ) can be frustrtating at times but also give you the best high when things all come together

I'd agree with that.

Since 2000, there has definitely been a recovering market for interesting/recreational/collectable cars that may protect their capital value - with the better air-cooled 911s being particularly sought after. But 'investment' alone is too risky.

My advice would be:
- Buy for the long term - because you really want one, and 'get' and 'love' them
- Buy carefully - lots of over-priced tat on the market at the moment
- Take time, get the best advice - don't rely on the classifieds
- Expect the market to see a bit of a correction (perhaps in the winter)
- Consider other options such as the 911'E'

Classic car price index

Could keep going up, flatten out or be a repeat of the early 90's

One point to note the values only tend to stabilise after a crash (drop)

Data updated (porsche values dipped by 3.7% in May compared to April)

Index Period Price* % change/month

HAGI P May 2014 215.40 - 3.77

The HAGI Top Index (which is the graph pictured is our overall market measure for exceptional historic automobiles. The HAGI P Index (figures highlighted) is measuring the rare Porsche automobile market.

Does anyone have an overview of what is classified as in the 'rare Porsche automobile market'?

That graph seems to suggest that people are selling gold to buy classic cars!

The data for 1972 2.4 s is even more extreme (tripled in the past 3 years)

Intrestigly it appears it would have been better (from an investment point of view) to have bought three crappy ones in 2007 than one really good one.

715% rise in value verus 460%

yes an excellent place to put your money for enjoyable driving with a delicacy rare amongst modern machinery and a perfect interface of car and driver. The relative rawness of an early 911 is a treat in itself, notwithstanding the looks of a car unswollen through the march of regulation and electronics.

As for values. No idea, I still drive mine as the maker intended. I am also receiving many unsolicited expressions of interest to buy which would make me feel values have further to go, coupled with the fact Porsches still look cheap vs their Ferrari, Mercedes and other cousins.

I am confident in saying the $ sign can replaced with a £ sign for an accurate reflection of current market

Alas to some money is all things. The unfortunate outcome is that those who bought to enjoy have the consequence that their motors are worth so much now that the thought of accident or more mileage will effect values, and to most that is understandable unless money is no object.

Not being judgmental as we all get pulled in with house prices, car prices, etc, but for fuchs sake don't forget the fundamentals of getting in, turning on, putting the foot down and living a little.

Priceless.

One of the top specialists (cant remember which) has said that many old 911 including the 993 are being put away like fine wines by collectors.

Its one of the reasons that there are so few good cars for sale.
