I own a 90 964 C2 manual and need some help to see if I have a gearbox issue or nothing to worry about.

I was in central London on the weekend and was probably driving around for a couple of hours in very intense stop start traffic which required a lot of gear changes and I could see general oil temperatures were rising. On the way home once off the M4 it became almost impossible to select gears, especially first gear but really it was all of them.

I parked up at home and the car was hot. I left it for a couple of hours and still hard to select but slightly better, then an hour or two later it seemed fine.

Is this a common thing for the gearbox to seize/get sticky when very hot?

Those symmptoms are typical of the clutch slave cylinder and hose needing changing or bleeding at the very least.

Is this a fairly easy (read reasonably cheap) job to have done by a specialist garage?

Long shot, but I had similar symptoms in my 3.2 Carrera. Initially 1st gear, and then 2nd + 3rd became tricky or impossible to engage. No noises from the gearbox to suggest a major problem. Temperature wasn't at issue but I had been changing gear a lot more than usual that morning as a group of us were driving twisty roads towards the foot of Stelvio Pass

I discovered that the bottom edge of the foam / neoprene shroud underneath the leather gear stick gaiter must have dislodged and was obstructing the gear stick from engaging gears

Shroud removed and problem sorted

Bleeding it is fairly easy but fiddly without a lift. A specialist garage would charge you about the same as brake fluid change i.e. about 50 quid. If they need to change the slave and hose my guess would be about 250 quid because of the parts costs and there being more work involved. I had the same symptoms and solved it by bleeding the slave. I later had the slave and hose replaced for good measure when the garage fitted a new clutch. I think we get the same question on Rennlist about once a month. So it's a very common problem.

Great thank you all. Apologies if recurring question ;-). I'm going to do a test this weekend when I next drive the car and see whether it's still there. If still a problem i'll try to resolve armed with the info above. Cheers

If you intend doing the job yourself,I would advise investing in one of those kits that pressurise the line by hooking up to a compressed air supply.ie:spare tyre.
People like Halfords sell them.
When I did my G50 gearbox rebuild, I really struggled to bleed it until I bought one.

Had same prob on my 964 C2 I changed slave and master but it ended up being the peddle plate that the brake and clutch peddles bolt onto..and bolt to on the floor had split
After changing all these bits its been working brilliantly
