Why have 964's grown in popularity?

Had a run out in a 2.4S several years ago and absolutely fell for the cars charms. The brakes though were shockingly bad. Always surprised by how much grunt the 964 has on track ask anyone that has raced on the same tarmac as them, its depressing as hell to suddenly hear that bark followed by the sight of the car in front warp speed off into the distance. I think they were very conservative with the power rating on these, a healthy C2 seems much faster to me than the numbers suggest.
Hi Neil, a friend of mine will agree with you. At the last track day we did at Oulton Park he was taken aback at how my 964 could pull a gap on his 996 on the straights. His very words were, "that 964 has got some grunt!" The 5 speed 'box in the 964 has perfectly chosen ratios. They in turn allow the driver to utilise all the engine's hp and torque very effectively.

Did a Rennlist N. Wales run a couple of years ago, I was in my K400 Manthey Mk1 996 GT3 (or my Gen 1 997 GT3) can't remember, either way, the 964 punches well above its weight (as I know from having owned several 964 RS's)

Looking at Ade's pic, would that have been a certain Mr Boggiano in the Guard's 964? If so, he certainly knows his way around those roads! The 5 speed 'box in the 964 has perfectly chosen ratios. They in turn allow the driver to utilise all the engine's hp and torque very effectively.
Well this thread has been a nice surprise - here's mine; I bought this last Summer as it was, in my humble opinion of course, the best looking 964 I had ever seen It's an RS replica by Jasmine Porsche (their fifth build, I think). 80% of the RS experience with 20% electric windows, more compliant suspension and A/C (all of which I found to be a major bonus!).

OP back again - interesting posts and glad to see it grew some legs. Has it answered my original post - kind of.
The talk of values and investment always intrigues me. They may have gone up in value, but so has everything else!
Just look at that blue one above your post. I can't think there are many better looking cars for the money. They are beautifully built and great to drive. I know this can be said of most air-cooled Porsches but the 964, for me, just has that dash of je ne sais quoi,The talk of values and investment always intrigues me. Are you in the market for one? What about them has stirred you, or do you not really get their rise in popularity?

We are getting a lot of enquires about them at the moment and interest in 964 has really exploded from our perspective at least. I have always wondered why they were less favoured than the 993 but I do think the 993 is a better looking car. I guess some cars grow on you and rising prices of other 911 models seems to have helped the popularity of and appreciation for the 964. I'm beginning to think that the 996 is looking pretty good too.....

I don't think the prices can go much lower on 996's can they? I prefer the later 996.2 cars with the 3.6 engine. I smashed so many miles on our C4S demo's over the years I sold them, lovely cars.I'd still rather have a 964 in my garage though...

st tends to stick for a while though - until people are happy to see a nice car for what it is.
I wish I had bought the very low mileage, one owner, Jade green Triumph Stag that nobody wanted back then when people scoffed at them. I wouldn't stretch the extra £500 to her meet her asking price but that particular car would be worth a small fortune now.
Hindsight is great but foresight is great too - especially when it means having a 964 parked up In the garage.

Ok, maybe not quite the car that is the 964 but I do have a little soft spot for the old triumphs. I have owned a mk2 GT6 and a TR4 in my time so I am allowed to like T cars! :-)

I have a soft spot for the old stag. Bit of a cads car in its day, and a lovely sound not entirely backed up by performance.
Drove one at 6 that belonged to my neighbour that he still owns, (down a private road i lived in as a kid, on his lap) but left a lasting impression not enough to actually buy one though.
Compared to a 911- no contest!!!!
