All of the 964's that I have driven have had the sport wheel. The wheel in the first pic. The RS wheel is the same but with RS script. These wheels are non airbag. The airbag wheel - the second picture - is a whole lot heavier still.

It was only when I weighed my steering wheel that I realised that it wasnt airbag - hence the red herring comment!

it could be that a lot of 964 owners assume that their cars have airbags when in fact they dont.

You can get a cat bypass muffler that is slightly louder than standard but tbh running with the other two silencers in place the car will not be that noisy, especially from the drivers seat.
Would you have any recomendations on manufactures for one? Also, how would you best improve the exhaust on a 964 whilst minimising the increase in noise?

Thanks in advance

Regarding the exhaust, mine has a Dansk bypass which has similar dimensions and the look of the original cat (without the catalyst inside). It also has brackets if you want to fit the original heat shields to it. It's also good quality compared to some other bypasses:

http://type911shop.co.uk/epages/de867ca1-377e-432e...

Along with the two standard silencers, mine usually measures around 102 db (static test at 0.5M) so is good for almost all tracks.

One thing to watch when changing the cat is that the flange from the heat exchanger could be starting to disintegrate owing to its age. Mine was fixed by cutting off the flange and welding on a new one. Much cheaper than a new heat exchanger which is mega money!

Mine bypass was purchased from Turbo Thomas, maybe Danske do one I'm not sure. It is basically a bypass shaped a bit like the original cat but with a perforated baffle inside. Nothing complicated but it works.
You don't say what it is about the exhaust you want to improve, I assume the noise? Either a cup pipe or a g pipe, but with either of these and a cat bypass muffler track day limits could be touch and go. A bigger tail pipe also amplifies the noise level. If more power is wanted then book the car in with Wayne Schofield for a remap.

Sorry. To be clear, I am not looking for noise improvement at all. I suffer from tinitus. I am looking to have an efficient system which is not too noisy in the car or ut of the car - Must be track day friendly.

I would delete the cat for sure, they were a drain on power when new so after 20 years....plus you save 10kg. None of those other mods are what I would call noisy from inside the car and while they will not make the engine any more efficient, again they do get rid of 10kg or so of weight. A remap would certainly help get the most out of the engine, 30-40 bhp increase is quite normal...and if you make a trip oop North you are welcome to try my C2 for comparison.

I tend to find friendly MOT garages don't flag it as long as emissions are OK.

I took the car to Snetterton 300 yesterday to try it on the track. To be honest, I expected it to need a few set up adjustments but it had a lovely balance straight out of the box. I think that It needs a driving technique similar to a GT3 but the trail doesn't need to be anywhere as deep into apex. The 40% lockng factory diff set up was perfect. Where a deep trail was needed, I found the car would rotate nicely at tight apexes with a lift to unlock the diff. The cup 2's did not behave as i was expecting and screeched away in just about every corner. On saying that, the slip angles were small. Quite a different to the original cups which gave up grip much less progressively. Either way, they worked in terms of speed because the pace that the car had yesterday would have put it close to the top of the grid at last year's Future classic race. Not bad for a car with air con, electric windows and a standard engine and gearbox. All it needs is a little more camber. The heat spread on the tyres was a too outer biased. Maybe half a degree on the front and one degree on the rear.

Overall, an absolute delight to drive, lot's of fun, very rewarding and pacy. Also, would be very forgiving for a novice driver. you can take liberties with it that would spit you off instantly in a GT3.

The car is everything that I wanted it to be and more both on the road and track.

I will post up driving impressions in more detail and some in car footage when I have time.

964 was a very expensive cars compared to its pier group at the time and wasn't a good seller.
The main reason for the lower sales volume was the recession during the 964 build window.
The 964 was a very desirable car in period.

That is really something, I bet the noise is much less with some more camber but possibly less progressive breakaway.

Very nice indeed. You are a very calm driver.

Is it understeering a little too much?

Actually no understeer issues. The slow rack just makes it look like understeer. The tyre squeel was either rear or all 4 wheel drifting. As said, more camber will improve the footprint and things will probably quieten down.

Interestingly no bump steer issues under turn in at all. Very easy to drive at speed

I was there for a while on Friday and thought the red 964 might have been you however each time I came over to say Hi you were heading out for some more laps. Seemed to be going well, have you had a remap yet?

Engine still standard. I'll get a cat bypass fitted and take the car to Wayne for a remap. Pity we didn't meet up. What car were you driving?

I thought so, you will no doubt need a nibble of 5th on the straights after a trip to waynes smile

Unfortunately I wasnt driving on friday as my car needs an MOT but went to join the IB massive for a bit of banter and some passenger laps: http://www.impactbumpers.com/forum/index.php?/topi...

Let us know what you book next, be nice to see the car in person.

Nice Guys, I had a chat with a few during lunch. They trotted off to crack a bottle of champers to toast someone sorely missed. A nice touch I thought.

Looking forward to some more BHP. The long back straight was a little too long for my taste on Friday but the little car redeemed itself through the complex, the bomb hole and Coram.

Will post up next time I'm out. Will be good to meet up

What the hell was that little black thing that left you standing on the standing on the straight? Nuts! I know it didnt have the legs on you for a lap....but respect to straight line speed!

:-)

Oh and cup bypass keep rest standard for exhaust, never any noise issues. Keep a cup pipe for those days at spa (should come in at about 104 with a cup pipe and cat bypass).

Thats what I run on my NGT, same as many others who track a lot I think.

Think that is was a Corsa or Similar with a little turbo work - looked like a lot from where I was sitting.

Thanks for the heads up on the exhaust. I'll get it done along with the revised geo and remap asap.
