356 Speedster replica wanted LHD/RHD

Dougie,
Looks like you had a great trip, bizarrely I was parked in exactly the same spot outside the casino during the 2008 historic grand prix. love the look of your car and take on board what your're saying about the gear box. I've since met a really good guy who has a drag bug (0-60 in 3 seconds) as well as his day bug which is pretty quick. We are going to begin with the sports exhaust which arrived this week and then fit a set of twin port 40 webers. He is also fitting a petronix ignitor which replaces the points system. He reckons this will help acceleration a lot and we can think about the gearbox before the trip.

I picked it up from Chesil last Thursday and drove around 490 trouble free miles including a slight detour back to Edinburgh. Not as uncomfortable to drive that distance as I had thought although I think you tend to stop more often in an older car. Comfortably sat at around 70 on the motorway and very nice to drive with the roof down on the country roads I took to Bath. Gear shift is a bit tight from standing start but I suspect that could be something to do with it being a new box, change was fine when rolling.
No more wind noise than you would expect with the hood up and completely dry when it did rain. Back in Edinburgh the cobbled streets make for a bumpy ride but otherwise not a lot of cluncking on smoother roads. Absolutely no idea about fuel consumption, I think perhaps around 75 litres did the trip. Sounds a bit like a Beetle on steroids so looking forward to having the sports exhaust fitted (see pic).
This is a car you buy for aesthetics more than performance. It will ultimately live in France and not be doing much more than 50klms up and down the coast.
For a bit of fun I would recommend one. A
Nice, welcome to the 356 Speedster club - the sexiest curves in the Porsche family IMHO No more wind noise than you would expect with the hood up and completely dry when it did rain. Had my Chesil since 2001. Just doing a complete overhaul and update to vintage 356 engine spec but with modern performed, sound and handling (classic car performance not Supercar ) plus 5 stud hubs and wheels...
some Speedsters out having fun:

That's quite an outing of speedsters..... I'm getting through a list of improvements with mine also including sports exhaust, electronic ignition, twin dellorto's, deep sump and 5 stud fuchs alloys
I am now near the end of the development. Should be running and rolling by early next week.Sports Exhaust, yes, nice idea. This is the custom S/S one that Rich at Turbo Thomas weld for me (assembled on slave engine as template):
Deep sump yes, but not the standard deep sump, use the thin EMPI thin sump, which allows you to lower the rear of the car. The other one catches Sleeping Policeman...
Electronic ignition, yes definitely.
Twin Dellorto's same as I have, great!
5 Stud fuchs, a bit "Street" for me on a Speedster
I will have lots of pictures to provide next week of finished car.
This is my beauty:

How do these handle? Can you hustle them in the twisties?
They handle ok, but they're not a spot car. A classic tourer. If you want to drive one around like a sports car and put a monster engine it, you will surly kill yourself. They are about raising smiles and making friends everywhere you go (plus ALL ladies love a speedster, having a speedster is like having a puppy - winning formula) Does anyone know where I can get a matching mirror for the passenger side ? Plus the gear selector is quite short and straight which makes it a bit of a reach for her. The pictures I've seen of others show a longer lever with a bend in it. Could this be an easy swap if I can find one ?

Long gear stick is a classic beetle gear stick : VW Heritage. Easy to fit.Door mirror, is it a Chesil?
With the soft-top up, there is a massive blind spot N/S so make sure she knows. Also make sure she understands there is absolutely no safety in the car, so treat all road users like the are crazy drivers and she will be fine
Without sounding too crude what have you guys been paying over the last 6-9 months for these. I was looking at buying one a year ago and the prices seemed in the high teens or more. If they are more like £15k then I might have to go shopping again ... I also made a few enquiries directly with Chesil but they did t seem that interested.
There's a chap in Balsall Common near Kenilworth that builds 356 Spiders and Coupes.
I assume that this is the chap

Don't know much about him except that a friend of mine has a unit at the same farm.

Hi W1111AM,
Nice looking speedster and very interested to hear how your new exhaust sounds. I've completed everything I intended doing for the time being but not quite convinced by my new stainless sports exhaust. I'll post a picture of how my engine bay now looks and take some more with new wheels etc when the rain stops. Cheers AOC

New twin Dellorto's now fitted with elelectronic Petronix ignition, deep sump, performance oil breather tower, new inline fuel filters, new stainless braided fuel lines, and stainless sports exhaust system.
Yet to have it dyno tested and decide whether to go any further on the engine. Seems to have a bit more mid range torque and now sits more comfortably at 75mph. Touched about 85 but think that's pushing her a bit.
W1111AM,
Would be good to find out a bit more about what you've done to your engine as it would seem you have a similar set up albeit I haven't touched the block yet. Also interested to hear what you think about the custom exhaust.
Cheers
AOC
