Since the subject of sat navs raised its head in the Gen F thread recently, I thought that I would query the accumulated forum wisdom on my options for an E3 satnav.

So, I have an E3 with no satnav fitted. Personally, I actually quite like the built in units - I have one in the E1 VXR8 and whilst it is a bit of a pain getting the address entered, once you are off and running, it is quite effective and gets me all around the UK and France quite happily. I also detest stick on units like the tomtom or garmins or ipads or phones - just dont like them stuck on the trim or windscreen or the marks that the suction mounts leave behind afterwards. So I want to be able to use the built in screen.

I have been told that the E3 unit is the same as the ones used in the E1 - but those come in at £1200-£1500 which is a bit steep - to put it mildly.

So I am guessing that my only viable option is to look for a second hand E1 unit (and hope that it works) unless anyone knows of a better solution that would still utilize the built in screen. I did see something about people using bluetooth to connect something from their phone but that was on a VF.

Does anyone know of any other approach to getting satnav in place using the existing built in screen?

Thanks

Phil

Before I start, this might get a bit confusing with regard vehicle types. An E3 is equivalent to a series II Commodore. An E2 was an in-between model which had the series 1 interior but an E3 exterior!
E1= Series I Commodore interior
E2= Series I Commodore interior
E3= Series II Commodore interior

My 2012 series II Commodore did not come with SatNav but I had the OEM stuff fitted aftermarket by JHP. Unfortunately it didn't display the nav instructions on the dash but a quick visit to JezzaB and he fixed that up for me.
There is a faceplant link to people who look after this sort of thing.
So not sure to put these links up.

You should be able to get the E3 SatNav or equivalent for $1800 in Aussie Dollars which probably works out to 58p at the current exchange rates!
If you go on Ebay Oz there are some retailers on there of new and used stuff.
I only know the 2 above people but I know a few others can do this with OEM stuff too.

I fitted one of these to my E1 (there may be something similar for the Series 2):-

Uses the stock screen and 'SatNav' button. But has a remote.

Box in the glovebox .. not had new maps in a while though.

There seems to be a bit of misleading info given here.

The E1 and E2 have the same radio unit but the E3 is totally different.

I know. I was a bit surprised but have been assured that that this is the case.

I went looking for all this a while back, this is the information I found.

There was an asl navigator option available
http://www.asllogistics.com/catalog/VE529-SatNav-T...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXosJNHZxfI

From the downloads I took at the time its a little unit which was fitted behind the panel left of the drivers footwell:

which you can then buy updated maps from here:
https://www.naviextras.com/shop/portal/newCatalog?...

so if you can find one of these units for sale & installed correctly, you should be good for getting nav.

Thanks - that looks quite interesting.

Did you ever get one? If not, what put you off?

No I never got round to getting this. Can't remember why. I use my phone as satnav now, with the audio through bluetooth.
