Good point...

Here they are - genuinely interested to know if these are bad or whether they have likely been changed at some point recently.

And here's a close-up of the old one.

Cheers.

Is the one on the left new? There’s two isn’t there, one either side?

OK, so now the engine compartment blower is working but it is very noisy - has anyone tried to service one of these?

Thinking it might just be a case of taking the covers off and adding some lubricant?

That might work for a few days, the bearing will be on the way out, they get very hot in the engine bay, probably why the previous owner unplugged it!

Can the bearings be replaced or is that likely to be outside of my skill range

Probably as well to replace the whole fan unit. The engine compartment one is a) cheaper and b) easier to access.

It's nearly 30 years old and will have had a lot of use so changing the motor rather than just the bearing might be a good option.

Non Porsche part available for £180 and in stock currently................

Thanks both. Another question (sorry) - why is my engine bay different to the one I found online on a youtube video - the first photo is the one I found which appears to have a specific "intake" for the blower and the second is mine. Is this a difference between pre & post varioram updates (not that it is necessarily related to the varioram)...??? Mine is a 94 and I think the red one is a 96.

Interestingly, looking at the underside of my engine cover, there appears to be a square opening that would roughly match the intake on the first photo?

First one is the same as my ‘96 VR, I’m sure OC will confirm the same on his - I think OC has had his even longer than me (2008)!

Yup your 94 car is pre varioram and the heater pipe layout is different to the varioram cars.

My car is 94 and looks the same as yours.

2008? Wasn't that last year? What's the date?

Yes VR setup upper photo same as my '96... but in my preV ignorance I was going to suggest maybe your car had a fixed wing at some time in the past - shows how wrong that would have been hehe

Here's a full bay shot of preV loaned from the interweb.

...but here's a preV with the later air/blower setup?

.....so the blower/airduct changes were probably simple evolution over time.... or the owners changed things over time..... or something else hehe

Thanks OJ. Interesting looking at those two photos. There are quite a lot of differences in the layouts between the two. Shows that you need to be careful looking up info online for "how to" jobs to check you're comparing like for like.

Early 993s had the same fan ducting as the 964, which was then changed in the later, but still non-varioram, cars.
