So... because I've been bored lately and when that happens I find ways to spend money, potentially unnecessarily, I've been having some work done on the 993 to freshen up bits of it that are starting to show their age.
Funds wont yet stretch to having the repaint but I'd like to get some of the mechanicals sorted. Engine and Gearbox are all good they've ha lots of love and attention over the years, the suspension I have booked in for a rebuild.
The part that I'm wondering about now is the steering rack. The car has got 120K on the clock, and its not causing me any concerns in the way that it steers, I'm just thinking "while its apart" what else is worth looking at from a preventative point of view?

Also anyone had a rack refurbished and have any recommendations for who to send it to?

Ive seen mentions for Western Power in Bristol and Kiley Clinton in Birmingham...

Oh dear.

Why would you take apart anything that is working correctly, with no sign of impending failure?

ETA why are you getting the suspension 'rebuilt'?

I told you... cos I'm bored!... and Im not allowed to buy a motorbike biglaugh

The suspension has been on the car for more than half its life... When it was last 'checked' it was borderline on its performance and Bilstein do a refurb service so having a rebuild is a bit more cost effective than buying a new kit.

As far as something showing no signs of impending failure.... its nearly 30 years old... I know from past experience impeding failure normally doesn't give you much warning.

Just tell SWMBO to increase your life insurance?

Sounds like a good plan. I'd source some new top mounts before you start.

...but here I disagree - if you were entering the car in a 24-hour race, maybe, but the 993 was built with quality parts - you might actually cause problems that don't yet exist. If it does start to leak next year, and it needs work, how many bolts would have to be undone twice? Two? hehe

Top mounts were done not long ago on a previous visit to CG, but I'll have them checked again. and good point on the rack... if its not a big job then that can wait until its a problem.

and... dont be giving SWMBO ideas!! I thought it was suspect enough when she was suggesting putting down rugs in places that I thought would result in going arse over elbow on a regular basis...

...apologies for going off track - what did CG fit - OE from Porsche, or what? I'm doing mine very soon.

Use kiley, very good, and a good move as 993 were/are prone to just dumping your steering fluid.

That’s interesting, when I had my suspension refresh I was told they were the limiting factor in getting a decent geo, so adjustable are on my shopping list

I guess its how you use the car, I'm not tracking mine (much) so I don't need massive amounts of camber.
