Driving the 430

Its just possible the initial issue came from you starting the engine before 'check ok' came on which is why when you turned it on and off it went away - the 'auto' mode query may be different - might it be worth reading to see if there are any hints in the owners manual ?

New owners often get the kangarooing because they are not positive enough on the throttle from zero to engage the clutch

Thanks. The 'kangarooing' was caused because the car did not have enough power to move off smoothly.

If it was red then that's the cat temperature warning. Did the message appear when the car was warmed up or was it there from a cold start? In any case you're going to need to visit someone with a diagnostic computer so if you let us know where you are based we can recommend someone.

The message appeared when the car was warmed up. Im in the West Midlands (Birmingham)

Check your hydraulic pump. How long does it spend 'charging'when you open the driver's door? It may be strugling to cope with the e-diff and F1 box...

Thought the box always started in Auto - mine does. Changes to manual as soon as I start playing with the paddles

If the warning light was red then the cat overheat threshold has been triggered. If the car was warm when it happened then one of two things could have occured:

a) The temperature in one catalytic converter got too high
b) The temperature probe has malfunctioned (Thankfully, Ferrari got rid of the dreadful Cat "ECU" on the 430)

When the temperature threshold is reached the car will flash the warning and if it continues to climb the fuel will be shut off to one bank (hence the low power and rough running).

It is impossible to say what the problem is over the internet - the safest option is to get the car to someone with a proper diagnostic computer to take a look at what errors have been logged.

Well well. I had mine for 5 years and drove it for 27K and never knew it did that! Pressing the A button was the first thing I always did when I jumped in!

I thought only the 430 Scuderia defaulted to auto mode during startup?

My 2005 F430 F1 always starts in manual mode so perhaps it depends on the age of the gearbox ECU?

Well mine has got a Scud rear grill so perhaps it's confused?

Yes, it's down to software level, which is programmable. Ferrari brought out several revisions. One (in mid '07) included default to auto on startup, (something the federal market wanted, but the euro cars got it too) so some cars do this, others do not. The '07 reflash also included changes to increase clutch longevity, particularly when using launch. The later version after that one also used a really neat bit of programming called a "torque transmittablity curve" to further extend clutch life. The only way to know which version you have is to have it hooked up to a diagnostic machine..

Is the software update something a dealer should do at service time or do you have to ask/pay for it?

It was done while the car was under warranty, it wasn't a recall , just a software update, so would be chargeable. Unfortunately, only a few specialists have the updated SD3 files, which means it may be an expensive visit to a main dealer to find out...

When is a visit to a main dealer ever not expensive?

If the later update was released before 2009 then I guess a 2007 should have had it done under warranty then? Mine was still covered under extended power cube warranty until last January if that counts?

' cube doesn't support items like software updates IIRC, it covers failures of items only. Unless you have the very earliest ('05) software and plan to use the launch button all the time it isn't worth worrying about...
