458 5th year warranty extension - ouch!

Hi all my 2012 458 is 4 years old at the end of this year so after seeing the Cali warranty renewal thread I decided to ask the main dealer what the cost of extending the warranty for year 5 is.

I was pretty surprised: £3,720!

OK I appreciate it is a £200k car but still.... Coming from the world of Porsche where my GT3 RS warranty cost c.£1k (only) this seems a lot!

So I wanted to ask whether:

1. People generally extend their warranties with Ferrari after the 4 year manufacturer warranty has expired or do you take the view that car is now sufficiently reliable there is no point and "go commando".

2. If you do extend the warranty is this the standard price or is it negotiable/vary by dealer.

I do c.3k road miles per annum. Thanks in advance.

It was something similar on my RR Phantom. Warranty Direct was cheaper but I have heard stuff about them I don't like. I took the view that keeping 3k per year in a fighting fund made more sense and so far so good. You could argue that having a warranty helps when selling a car like a 458 but if you are keeping it then that doesn't matter. I bought my Scud partly on the basis that it has a Ferrari warranty but I have yet to make a claim.

I always pay whatever it costs, being able to sleep easy at night with a manufacture's warranty is the only way I can enjoy my cars!

But that's just me, I always factor it into the cost of car ownership - and usually end up using it as a way to justify buying a newer model wink

I started the post about warranty extension and I have decided to go for the 5th year Ferrari Power extension. There are 2 Ferrari warranties available - the Power one which costs £3k and the full one which costs £4k. The only difference I could see was that the full warranty covered absolutely everything whereas the power one excluded leaks of oil, water etc but did include engine, gearbox, steering and major electricals including ECU. Both entitle you to Ferrari assist. For year 6 there is a 15% discount and a further 15% if you dont claim in year 5 - so in theory the year 6 warranty could only(!!) be £2k.
My reasoning for going for it was piece of mind. It also adds to the cars value should I decide to sell over the next 12 months.
A painful decision - only time will tell its the right one.

Thought this was automatic? Didn't know you had to physically 'renew' it Tim - how do you go about that?

Expensive but not if something goes 'bang' - imagine the box losing cogs for example..££££ At least there is an option to extend - Lambo owners don't
carry breakdown assist tel no's - they carry bibles!!!

Definitely expires annually. You need to email scans of:
  • V5C registered keeper document bearing chassis number
  • Completed "With You" application form
  • Signed personal information waver

I'm a fighting fund kinda guy. If you own enough cars/things for enough time you will average out on the luck front in terms of big repairs vs no repairs. You need to be happy that should you get unlucky you can fund the repair yourself, but long term you cut out the middle man and end up in profit. They sell these things to make a profit.

I also question the value on sale. When I'm buying it's a nice to have rather than a value item. In my mind it pales next to condition, spec, history, supply/demand etc and I attribute no value to it.

Each of us is different though in terms of risk appetite and the price we are willing to pay for it. I'm an accountant by training so I run the maths and that helps me sleep at night. Clearly I should get out more smile

Somewhat co-incidentally (or maybe not...), very close. £3.4k for 1 yr or £6.3k (from memory) for 2 years. That said Mclaren only have 3 year of manufacturer warranty vs 4 for the 458.

OK so the consensus is that the warranty is priced at about as expected and worthwhile doing. I guess I've been spoilt by years of reasonably priced Porsche warranties - not something I ever expected to say!

PS free Assist is an interesting thing I've learned on here!

My 458 spider reaches 4 years on 1/1/17 and I am faced with the extended warranty question. Wondered whether anyone had any further thoughts or whether anyone has had significant (costly) problems with a 458 in years 4 or 5 and either had, or wished they had, an extended warranty? I extended the warranty on my 599 for a couple of years, never claimed so stopped extending it. Inevitably problems started cropping up once I no longer had warranty cover.

What would make the decision for me would be to know of any major failings during the last few years of theses cars , on my boxster I go for extended Warranty because the engines are known to go bang quite regularly.
I do not
believe Ferrari have any major issues. So I would keep a fighting fund

Am happy to pay for the warranty - the combination of very expensive engine, gearbox, 4RM system, loads of electronics is just too scary for me without warranty. i do think there wont be any engine issues, but the gearbox and electronics are a different thing given how many failure messages I get. Then again I drive 15k miles a year, so a little different to garage cars, which might be less failure prone

I actually think it is the other way round. Garage queens are much more likely to develop fault codes etc if not being used rather than daily drivers. So I would tend to use extended warranty schemes for those rather than the everyday car.

My 430 runs out of warrenty in may and wondering if it's the same 3k as its obviously an older car
