Ferrari Speciale Factory Collection (and comparison to CS an

I suppose the thing I was most surprised about was the gear change. In Race mode it is fairly brutal and even in automatic mode it is not at all smooth - especially compared to the 12C the transmission calibration is a big difference. The car completely comes together at full chat (with the gearbox giving bullet-quick changes unlike any other I have driven) but is not a patch on the 12C for general smoothness. The Speciale still asks a lot from the driver compared with other cars and I suppose that is where I get the 'still raw' idea from.
It depends if people think raw is synonymous with 'lower/simpler tech' or with 'screw the comfort, this car is about 10/10ths' -if the latter, the Speciale still has it in spades. Even the CS wasn't about lower/simpler tech in its day.
The CS is less comfortable but not massively so, it is noisier but mainly from the outside but it is not any racier - both are fairly hardcore cars in that department. Although the Stradale was an uncompromising car I managed trips to Le Mans, Spa and on the Irish Cannonball in it and it was surprisingly habitable. After 1,100 miles in the Speciale I don't think I was any less tired than if I had have been in the CS which was something of a surprise. Don't get me wrong, the Speciale is somewhere between the 12C and the CS but maybe 70% towards the CS and I wouldn't want to put anyone off the idea of owning one because all these cars are perfectly fine for a long journey, so long as you want to be tired but grinning at the end of it!
Do you have any experience of the 430 Scuderia? Would also be interested your thoughts in comparison against that if you have...It depends if people think raw is synonymous with 'lower/simpler tech' or with 'screw the comfort, this car is about 10/10ths' -if the latter, the Speciale still has it in spades. I personally can't see how an F1 box is better than a DCT box, especially like the one in the Speciale, although I know that most owners rave about the superfast 2 gear change in the Scud.
An 85 mile car just made mad money at a recent auction at Silverstone - about £250k on the hammer I think.
What a brilliant write up. I really enjoyed it and thanks for sharing with us. Congratulations and welcome to the Speciale family......Your wife did a great colour choice! Enjoy the car in the way that both you and wife intended.
Take some time getting to know it, use it around a track (I presume you will given the telemetry and track cameras) and you will get to understand, layer by layer, what your car is capable of. As you have the rest of your life to do so, take your time and enjoy it!
I'm really glad that you have previous experience of both Ferrari and McLaren and appear to have a balanced view, unlike some people on here. Looking forward to hearing how the acquaintance goes! Enjoy!

Thanks for the write up and i love it when people spec the cars to their own tastes and what they really want, not what they think will be easy to move on.
Its a gorgeous colour. However, ferrari can't prep a car for toffee and the cars arrive at the dealers looking dull and covered in swirls and buffer trails. Ferrari like to stand on their high horse, but they need to address their final prep issues.
As seen in this one i did the other week.
how it should look
This is by no means me advertising, but just think ferrari needs to up its game or at least do a refining stage when they machine polish them.

I agree that as a general rule paint finishing isn't their strong point - but should be for the prices they charge. However, they can only allow a certain amount of time per car before it becomes commercially unviable for them - and Ferrari are there to make money after all! But their loss is your gain They just cannot justify the amount of time, expertise and money needed to get the paint shining how professional detailers can get a car Its a gorgeous colour. LOVE that colour, and I am glad you didn't go for Rosso Corsa. Speciale/Scud/CS all seem to suit the 'special' ferrari paints imo! You and your wife did an excellent job with spec, however how much weight does it save by not speccing the lifting kit? As much as it saves weight I couldnt bare the thought of not having a lift kit with carbon at front and rear - might have something to do with all the 'traffic calming measures' aka F**K Off bumps in the vicinity of where I live.
Really appreciate the comparison with the 12c. As I really think people underestimate the 12c/Mclaren, and now Ferrari have finally succumbed to turbos it will be interesting to see if many F owners migrate to mclaren for a breath of fresh air/something different? Although early reports would seem that F will still be the market leader with their baby v8 super car.....

Awesome story! congratulations...
I've just ordered a Speciale here in the US and would love to pick up in Maranello. Have you any advice on how to go about doing this? I assume I work with my dealer here in the US... Does Ferrari arrange for the car to be shipped after I take delivery or is that my responsibility? Any advice appreciated
Thanks Again!
