I've been looking at the Macca too but does it have the Magic of the 458?

458 v F430 is like chalk and cheese. F430 manual might be having its magic moment in terms of prices but its not a patch on a 458 and the DCT box in reality.

At some of today's prices I wouldn't even say its a guaranteed investment so if you want a car to drive and accept it could depreciate short term you cant do much better than a 458 unless you want to defect to the mighty McLaren laugh

Don't really want to spend 650 money and really liked the 12c plus in the future it would be the original starting point of the new brand. There was something about the pureness of the first shape whereas the 650 seems a little contrived and trying too hard IMO

Looking for the next weekend toy, I currently have GTR35 650BHP GTR34 720ATW EVO7 Wide Body Road Race Reg 722BHP Will probably sell 35 and EVO to make way for the 458 ! I've owned a 430 Spyder and loved it but at the time didn't use it enough as I was worried about miles and depreciation ? Done most Porches and they are now silly money and also looked at the Macca MP4 but going off that idea!
Why did you go off the McLaren? - have you driven a 650S? it is a huge upgrade on the MP4 and 10x more car for the money than the 458 if you are actually going to drive it (rather than polish it)

Juno, check out the latest issue (#218, February '16) of evo magazine. They have a 3-page 12C buyer's guide in there.

I'm in the lucky position where I've owned a 12C, currently have a 650S (which is just a more polished 12C) and have driven my fathers 458 a good few times, so have driven all 3 cars regularly and back to back. All are amazing cars, no doubt.

The 458 is rev happy and is pure noise heaven. The 12C/650S less so but still a great noise despite what you read, its just different. The upside to the Mac noise difference is the power curve - the 458 is very rev happy and I found I was playing with the gearbox a lot more than I was in the Macs - the Macs are torque torque happy. The 458 gearbox didn't seem as snappy as the Macs until it was in race mode although the 458 box seemed smarter in selecting the right gear if left in auto mode. Driving position wise, much I prefer the seating position and the interior lay out of the Macs. My fathers car has the Daytona seats so not sure if that was a factor in me sitting too high? Simplicity is the Macs cabin philosophy while I struggled with the 458s steering wheel button and dash arrangement - although you would get used to that over time. Both are great in the handling and braking department. I probably still prefer the steel brakes my 12C had but the carbon brakes on the 458 and 650S are good - once I learned that left foot braking provided the same level of brake modulation and feel that the 12C steels offered.

The 12C, 650S & 458 are all great and have moved the game on from previous generation of the supercar - which is probably thanks to Nissan and its GT-R ;D I think its purely down to personal preference and which one you feel is the best. Performance wise, they are all good and if its just for road driving, there is very little to separate them. Can't comment on track driving as I've not braved the track as yet.

Have a look a don drive of a 12c. I was originally looking at 458 but found myself being drawn to the Mac very quickly after seeing one in the flesh. They look insane in real life and have much more of a supercar look than the 458 does (awkward from some angles). The 12c looks poised to pounce. Low roofline, wide haunches around huge air intakes. I feel it's a bit more exclusive too - there's very little chance you'll drive past another one on the same stretch of road.

Power and performance? On paper the Mac is better but I never push to things to the limit so can't really comment. I'm feeling that my 12c could end up being a keeper. It's a future classic IMHO - first of its kind and low production volumes.

I drove the 12C back to back with the 458 on the Las Vegas Speedway and came down in favour of the 458 (just) after that one drive. It was so close that I'd say the 650S would shade the 458 for me anyway on track. I'm not sure that is comparing like for like though, as the 488 is the relevant car to compare? Anyway I bought a 458 after 5 years with a 430 Spider (which I sold for the same price I paid for it in a rare and unprecedented for me avoidance of depreciation). Admittedly it was an F1, not a manual, but to me the 458 is a different animal - a quantum leap ahead of the F1 430 Spider. The 430 always felt to me like a 360 turned up to 11, the 458 is a new generation thing. I loved (and still do love) the f430 and wouldn't feel in any way short changed by staying in one, but the leap ahead of the 458 in overall capability is enough to mask/let me forget the to me minor advantages in the subjective digital v analogue comparison. Everyone to their own, drive them all, buy/keep the one you like best. Everyone will come out differently on this question and I think no-one is actually wrong.

458 is a leap ahead of the 12C, but then the 650 is a leap ahead of the 458 in my opinion.

Still I do personally prefer the McLaren Brand over the Ferrari brand. paperbag

Yeah I tend to agree with above, 12C and 458 are different and very close but McLaren really got it right first time with the 650S and its a marked improvement on 12C and 458 IMHO.

Love both brands to bits but for slightly different reasons.
Ferrari has the heritage and brand awareness/recognition for which sadly you pay a prancing horse premium
McLaren is pure quality and technology and more exclusive with an air of mystery and the unknown. Amazing value for money and potential for future classic status
Most people that speak to me see it as the next step up from Ferrari because they are not so common.

Naaa. You can argue the toss over this has that and vice versa when comparing but neither car is a leap ahead of either. Both in the same ball park in my view. The technology/engineering in a 12c is better but not a leap ahead better. I had the choice of either, went 12c. In the flesh it looks more of a serious car too, whereas a 458 looks "pretty". My cousin who has a 458 is moving to mclaren also, although he's going stump up the extra for a 650..

I was just thinking the same about an advert for a Yugo Delux I've seen with special wheel caps, one owner,FSH, very low miles (never ever clocked honest) price seems high. I really don't want to buy until the prices have bottomed out. Perhaps I should wait ?
