Hi

Has anyone had PPF installed by Porsche themselves, rather than after-market? I know that the the film which they apply is good (XPEL Ultimate), but I'm interested in any observations as to the standard of installation. This is on a new car so paint correction is not an issue, and to be done at Reading.

Thanks!

They are doing mine now.
Inspected it yesterday, looks perfect to me.
Can't wait to see the final car finished.

I got a quote from them to do full cover on my GT4. There is something to be said for the convenience of having it done prior to collection.

When asked what sort of preparation they do before applying the film they said "none". If you have confidence the paint will be in good condition from the factory that's fine to apply the film over but if you are of the opinion that some level of paint correction might be required then they won't do that.

I collected my car from West London and drove it 5 miles straight to a detailer that said they would do whatever level of correction is required before applying the film. Doing what was required seemed a more rational approach than specifying a two stage correction or whatever as it may not be needed.

I paid a lot less than was originally quoted, get a couple of quotes, play them off each other and the numbers start getting smaller.

Good to hear all.

I think the porsche paint is pretty good from the factory, except for the usual orange peel. Unless going for a level 5 detail / wet sand, I'm not sure it needs a detailer's touch. + Porsche have quoted much, much less than at least 2 popular PPF installers so unless their work is not up to par I'd rather have them do it.

Had mine done at Reading last week. Picked up the car Sat. We inspected the car before it was fuitted and had a detailer ensure the paint was good and mark free first.
The wrap is ok but you can see the edges, especially when muck gets on them on a Yellow car lol.
There have been a number of objects that have hit it and stuck - bugs, etc. They seem to clean off ok.
So far so good.

Thanks OldBob. Any chance you could post photos of the edges? They should be very hard to spot.

Although not fitted by an OPC, here's a few pictures of Xpel film being installed on my GT4. Most edges were neatly wrapped, although some of the panel corners do show an edge as can be seen in a couple of pictures, but this is just how the kit sections have been designed I think.

^ This

I must say it is not very obvious, but if you look you can see the edges where they don't wrap. It's really not an issue imo (at least from initial experience).
I think they wax over it too. The rain beads that formed on the front of my car were huge spheres that simply run off, just like after the best Carnauba waxing.

When you look at the bugs and dings on the front of the car following just normal driving (let alone any track / fast driving) you will appreciate having it.

re the muck noticeable, I mean when you clean it off you have to concentrate on the join since the wet muck accummulates at this junction as you wash it. I had to give a reasonble elbow to remove it from these slightly raised edges.

FYI, most PPF installers do very basic maintenance on the car first, as the PPF itself actually hides a significant number of imperfections, including swirls and marring. Personally I would have a car fully detailed first, but then I've decided against PPF by anyone.

I haven't seen another wrapped GT4, or any other wrapped car at all so not points for comparison but one of the things Topaz Detailing pitched me on was the fact that they are not exclusively tied to Xpel.

Areas where they feel the Xpel template was not ideal they made their own template and part of that is the desire to roll more of the edges (rather than have a visible cut line) than the Xpel kit caters for. Might be 100% sales pitch, might be something in it, we didn't go into details on what additional edges get rolled.

They are not the only one, some other installers have also adjusted the designs slightly for when they bring, to allow additional coverage to key areas, as some, such as a small overlap on the arch edge weren't being protected. It isn't anything special they do, but is an advantage over those still using the default pattern.

I did not realise that Porsche offer this as a service, does it come with any guarantees? I was thinking of going to Paintsheild however I have the expense of a transporter to and from their premises which adds extra costs. I presume the local Porsche dealership contracts out the work to a local specialist?

West London Porsche told me they used to contact it out but stopped doing that now they can do it themselves at Reading.

Correct - and they use Expel.

In future, I suppose they could do this at the factory in the exclusive department.

Are all cars delivered in to Reading first, then out to the dealers? Does anyone have a PPF quote from them that they can share?

IIRC the whole Front, Mirror backs, Sills and rear Haunches were quoted around 2.2K
Try negotiating it to be included as part of your purchase. It's very difficult to get Porsche to discount anything on the price or options of a new car against list.
If you're spending a lot of money it is not unreasonable to ask for a level of incentive to do so, be that all or some of the wrap perhaps.
They can always say no though and you can always then choose to walk away from that OPC or not..

I was quoted £2448 inc VAT at Paintshield -5% for being returning customer including:
1) Full Front kit: bumper, full bonnet (wrapped edges), full wings (inner edges wrapped), wing mirrors
2) Side sills
3) Rear Wheel Arches
