I keep seeing these and the desire is growing! The new offering from Forza isn't helping either.
Having trawled through old threads 2 things keep coming up. Windows and shocks.
Windows - spare parts no spare parts, hours of work and £££ or an hour at an indie and its all fixed.
Is there any updated news here?
Shocks - £1k per corner every 3 years or a £80 rebuild cost again every 3 years or so. Any progress on the current thinking?
Bob Houghton isn't that far from me so I might pick his brain sometime but I'm assuming a decent car from a dealer with a (good) warranty shouldn't be too heart stopping. I can live with 2-3k a year with a reserve just in case but I'm thinking these tend to be looked after especially if it comes from a dealer (Rardley, Forza Emblem etc)

buy the best you can, and keep it serviced. Superb cars for covering long distances comfortable with others (though back seat passengers need to be short if journeys are longer than an hour). Good size boot so quite practical too. Brakes not upto it for use a track car.

some parts can be expensive or unobtainable, some cheap if you find out where - e.g. brake discs direct from Brembo are 20% of the Ferrari price.

Had mine 8 years now, no major issues

Window fix - see here http://www.ferrarilife.com/forums/modern-v12s-456-...

Shocks - had my refurbed once £60 each, due to weeping, it will come back - come fault on BMWs of the same era too !

email me and I'll talk you through any thing else you want to know.

Don't listen to all the bullst banded about by people who've never owned one. I had one for just over 5 years and never had any issues.

Yes i'm sure that some people have had some problems - no different to any other car, but its not as common as people would have you believe.

Its a bit like not flying because plane's crash, yes sadly they do but if you put it into perspective its actually very rare.

I keep thinking that if i chanced upon the right car at the right price i'd buy another, but prices seem to have gone up since i sold mine, typical!

Don't be put off by the mileage - make sure that the service history is good though.

Thanks all. I don't think I'd chance a private sale as I'd want some support (unless maybe it was a good 5k less to allow for issues).
Good to hear there are fixes now.
M or not M? I imagine a MGT will be out of my range so again that nice blue 94 car at Forza... but it won't be this year.
Dave456 I'll drop you a line thanks for the offer.

I was specifically after a Rossa Corsa GT (not a M - they don't look as pretty without the Daytona bonnet scoops, in my opinion), and I was never going to notice the additional 6 bhp!

Of the 141 UK supplied RHD GTs (not GTAs), only 14 were Rossa Corsa - most are TDF or Silver in my opinion.

Rear seats (particularly if you get 5 seat option) are better in a M, as is stereo, but don't see much else - loss of moving rear spoiler too with M.

I drove 5 of the 6 for sale at the time I bought mine, and only 1 was private sale - I bought that one as it had the best history, and was the best car, so don't discount it.
I got a PPI, but the Ferrari specialist found nothing I hadn't already spotted, so I did feel it was a waste, but maybe was because the car was so good in the first place.

Take your time, and like I said buy the best you can afford.

Good Luck.

Thanks. There's a rosso pre MGT for sale now!

But what about the cost of a replacement carbon bonnet? *

  • OK, so I'm joking, but it always seems to have been brought up on these threads smile

But I will caution that these cars were worth sod all money up until very recently and I've seen some used, abused and unloved ones in my time. I'd really make sure the service history supports the cost of keeping one of these on the road over the years. I'd be willing to bet some of the higher mileage (now) nice looking cars have in their past suffered from the "worth nothing, spend nothing on it" syndrome and have been tarted up (and may have - shock horror fake histories)

I'd forgotten about the bonnet. £17k wasn't it to replace?
I didn't think the prices has changed that much so far. Little goes up for less than £25k unless its really poor.
I'm just hoping there isn't a 993esq resurgence in the next 6-12 months.

you've got to remember it was a £155k car new, so the parts are priced for a £155k car, so will always scare people with big figures.

How often do you replace a bonnet ?
How much would expect to pay for a FF bonnet ?

Also, isn't that what agreed value insurance is for ?
which reminds me - must increase value of mine :-)

Give it time ,!!!!!!!!!

There are great cars but, are more expensive to run than V8's, whether they are worth the extra cost is debatable, although much like a beautiful woman, once you open them up all costs of ownership are forgotten!!!!!

My car is a 1993 manual on which i've clocked up 178500 kms which is north of the magic 100k miles. managed to blow up the engine at rather high speed, but got it rebuilt and now for the next 100k. Build quality is shocking considering the cost of the cars when new, but thats italian cars for you in general. now its been rebuilt the power and torque are immense. very capable car and extremely pretty to look at. Fit a tubi and you wont be dissapointed

100k + miles - Epic! Although I bet the rebuild cost nearly as much as the car would be worth, right?

Decided to rebuild engine and gearbox at same time. Owed it to the old girl after massively abusing the 1st 100k of her life. Quite a bit of pain when the bill came in cry

Slightly off-topic, but can I just say that when I first saw the 456 GT on Top Gear I thought it looked absolutely beautiful and so well balanced. Am sure I have the original video or DVD somewhere!

I have a 1999 456m GTA. My 2nd 456. They are great cars, very understated. I use mine as a daily driver and take it everywhere. I mean everywhere. Leave it at the station. Grocery shopping. School run. Pretty much all occassions.

I purchased mine in Jan this year and done everything it needed doing at home. I had a Ferrari mechanic friend help me in parts and the whole experience taught me a hell of a lot (I knew nothing before hand!).

I've probably spent about £5k though doing the following
Cambelts
cambelt bearings
fuel/oil filters/air/pollen filters
Spark plugs
oils
brake fluid
recon of radiator plus coolant change
All radiator hoses (every single one!)
Water pump belt
AC Condesner belt
ac condenser (to be fitted still - no point in the winter)
Battery
new windscreen (insurnace covered it)

Plus lots lots more. A lot of things have been preventative, or one of those while we are at it jobs. The car came with no history, so I needed to create a baseline. Its the type of car that for most people the bargepole is too long. I took a (calculated) risk and was left as the winner when the ebay auction ended...

I've made a series of videos of the service for those who are interested. Here is the first. There are 21 in total:
