Probably the worst I've ever known the mobile site. Can't get into any threads in the lounge, keep getting the timeout error.
Seriously, is this how the website is going to continue? Everytime you say a fix is in place, a few weeks later it fails. So frustrating.

PH Towers have said several times what the problem is. The database is struggling running the forum and the classifieds. I think it was Switch several months ago, that said adding more servers won't cure the problem. There is no quick fix, otherwise it wouold of been done.
In my limited knowlege of IT, I think it is possible to ease the load on the database, but it isn't quick. I don't think PH Towers ever thought the site would be in it's current condition, as the new classifieds were meant to of gone live in november.

We are working on it, albeit indirectly with the new classifieds system. Once that is out and the old classifieds is put to rest, the forum will be able to keep pace with the traffic currently being thrown at it. -Matt

FFS.
I always know when its not just me having issues with the site, because you click in Website Feedback and this thread is already at the top.
Do flash-type ads slow thing up on the mobile site? Because since the more complex ads have been along, the mobile site is worsde than ever.
Does it make any sense to clog an already sub-optimal method of viewing the site, with ads thast make it even worse? On my train commute, I can view the site about half as much as I used to. Is the phone now devoting so much time and energy tpo loading the ads up, that the whole service suffers?

The ads are called through an asynchronous request. They don't slow down the site.

As has been said several times, the issue is down to the size and number of calls to the database, and is therefore not a simple thing to fix. We're as frustrated by this as everyone else and whilst we're looking at any and every palliative solution while we get the new classified site ready to take on more of the load (itself now but a matter of weeks away) there's little that will be as good a solution as this option.
There are two things behind this. The main one is that we expected to have launched the classified platform last year and therefore anticipated relieving some of the load on the existing platform much earlier than now, but we've also been taken aback by (frankly rather astonishing) traffic growth over the past 12 weeks, and this has really pushed us over the edge. We're seeing in excess of 5 million unique user sessions per month, and this is way more than anyone who has ever been involved with PH ever felt confident to write on a business plan, me included!

Maybe set up some sort of rota system... Username starting with an A to E get to visit on Mondays Username starting with F to K get to visit on Tuesdays Username starting with L to Q get to visit on Wednesdays Username starting with R to U get to visit on Thursdays Username starting with V to Z get to visit on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays are a free-for-all!

Hmm i like it! Stuart I can understand the shared frustration so thank you for keeping us informed. Out of interest 5 million hits seems an astonishing level are these all genuine? I mean what is the level of traffic on Auto trader in comparison and what have other site done to remedy the issues.

We can debate whether 5 million unique users (that's quite different from hits - that number is closer to 200 million) is real people or not (short answer - not) but it's still the commonly accepted measure of website audience size. By comparison AutoTrader is thought to be around 10m unique users per month, so about double ours. However the issue isn't so much with the traffic in isolation (because in theory you can just keep putting web servers in to cope with that bandwidth demand) but with the speed with which our databases can respond to requests. They are as big as they can easily get without significant re-engineering, and since we know that the new classified site will take most of that demand elsewhere, the best route to a solution is to get the new classifieds site out as quickly as we can, rather than spend time re-engineering a platform which will shortly not have to cope with nearly so much traffic. Hope that this makes sense to you. It almost does to me...

Taking about 30 seconds to load up the menus at the moment, feed the hamsters, it's nearly time for The Apprentice!
