Switch said: Thanks for the encouragement 6500 and rising.... But now... Game of Thrones If you wanted I could knock up some graphs showing "user counts/page loads" vs various utilisations on the Hosts. You could even host them on a few pages so users could see for themselves how the users affect the site. Though you would have to run our software to do it...for a play with some of the cars in the car park I'd think about doing that for free...

I'm so sick of seeing "waiting for pistonheads.com..." Glad it's being looked into, anyhow.

Pistonheads is the only website I visit that has bad hosting/performance. I normally give up on a slow or unreliable site.
Please - someone in Haymarket - buy some new Servers/SANs/Hosting/Bandwidth/IO Capacity - whatever you need to make the site solid and reliable.
Why is the classifieds even in the same realm as the forum ? Just close down the classifieds and run the beta, you'll fix it much faster when it's performance is subject to creating revenue.

I have been getting slow access time on PH for about a week now, is it the Beta CLASSIFIEDS Programme you have running at the moment ?

From what's been said before, they need different code. And that's not something you plug in overnight. And given the size of PH, it's not going to be off the shelf stuff either. (I very much doubt phpbb or vBulletin would cope). And any change has to keep the users happy. Imagine if PH looked like 4chan...or even IMOC. It has to keep it's simple clean format to maintain it's success. Fewer users would help....but that's not a great plan long term. And users were up in arms about turning off the 'old' classifieds. I don't envy them the task of significant change to the back end of PH. The word legacy springs to mind. And legacy = $$$ * sweat + blood.

It has to keep it's simple clean format to maintain it's success. phpBB would cope just fine, configured appropriately. And it would also be able to keep the clean format; turning off avatars and signatures and creating/installing a suitable theme would get you pretty much all the way there. PH's Gassing Station is a busy forum, but we mustn't delude ourselves that it's some kind of giant bestriding the web. There are plenty of very large forums (Ars Technica leaps to mind as an example) that run on things like phpBB. However, as always, the devil is in the details, and migrating to phpBB from whatever it is that currently makes PH go would be a hellish interesting experience.

I don't envy them the task of significant change to the back end of PH. The word legacy springs to mind. And legacy = $$$ * sweat + blood. You've about hit the nail on the head there. Nothing at PH is off the shelf. New code is the answer, and in the near future that means the new Classifieds. Which will take 70% ish of the traffic away from our current hardware, giving it some much needed breathing space. Given the way things work on this site as it stands we cannot just add more Servers/Bandwidth/DBs/SAN/IO. It simply will not "just fix it". We are hunting for the illusive silver bullet bit of code that will make everything a little bit better. But it's a bit needle in a haystack...

For the last week or more I've been coping by opening PH in 3 or 4 windows at once. That way, while my post is filtering its way interminably through the barely porous rock that constitutes the PH Server, I can get on and read others in the other windows. It is much better than staring at a greyed out 'Submit' button.
Parallel processing if you like...

Parallel processing if you like... Past couple of days i have started doing exactly the same, i have never had any loading issues until this weekend and just thought it was ipad connection. In work today and it has been just as bad, everything else is fine just PH.

Yep, very sloooow today. Although no 'Oooops' errors, I normally get lots of those but today it's just long waits.

Soooo, let me get this right. Everything was working just fine, then somebody changed something and now it works less well?
Cool.
Plan A: Put it back how it was?
