Suggestion / slight change request:

On the filters, some of them don't have sensible options, usually an upper or lower boundary isn't necessary and makes it less functional. For example, on the MPG filter, it lists 0-10mpg, 11-20mpg, 21-30mpg, etc etc (this obviously isn't the first one most PHers will pick but it will do for the principle...) In this example what would be more user friendly is >10mpg, >20mpg, >30mpg etc, or smaller increments around the centre of the bell curve.

Yep, completely agree. We've made some changes to some of the filters to make for bigger ranges of choice, but we've got a few more to look at including MPG. I think we'll actually head towards more multi choice actually. So if you look at how the colour filter now works, you can choose all, some or just one very easily. That same principle would allow you to cover everything from 20-50mpg, but exclude the really fuel heavy stuff with under 20mpg, if that makes sense?

So that's a work in progress. We just couldn't get everything done in time for the beta launch though, so you'll see this stuff start to come through over the next 6-12 weeks most likely.

Beta looks good. I'm using Google Chrome for my browser, version 12.0.742.124 (Linux). A couple of things I've noticed;

The back button behaviour is a bit odd; it first returns to the point on the previous page where I had clicked from, then it jumps to the top of the page, then it jumps back to the correct place again. It takes 1-2 seconds to do this, which is enough time to go and click something else and this often results in clicking the wrong thing because the page jumps just as you mouse down.

The mileage is a bit hard to find on the page. It's one of the first things I look for when browsing a car, but it is hidden in a relatively small font on the RHS of the advert details page. I'd like to see it either in the title next to the year or displayed prominently at the top of the description.

Good feedback, thanks. Back button stuff is a known conundrum which we're working on, and I'll note the mileage comments. Cheers. thumbup

Is the Beta version just a sample selection of the old classifieds? If not AM DB9's on the old lists 120, on the Beta only 110?

In theory it is all of the ads on the old site, however there are a couple of reasons why the number might be different:

1) The new site runs a few hours behind the old, so if you see newly uploaded cars from the old site missing, that's why.

2) The old site is actually a little bit unreliable in the way it removes cars which have expired or been removed. So it's possible that in your example the 110 number is the right one, and not the 120. This is particularly the case for cars submitted from dealers via a data feed, because the new site has a separate process for importing these cars.

3) In a couple of categories we're still closing down a couple of bugs in the migration process affecting which categories cars appear in. So your missing 10 DB9s might have landed elsewhere in Aston. We'll have nailed all of these by the end of this week I would think.

If you can allow multiple selections in the filters, I think this is almost perfect. 8 filters would be nice.

Re the mileage comment, I think most people would agree that it's not a reliable measure, too easy to fiddle. It might be nice if full dealer service history or dealer/Indy was filterable or easy to spot.

So you want eight filters, but not mileage?

Blimey.

I reckon that six is fine - I'm unlikely to use even those. I'm happy to see some variations on my specific search, after all.

On another UK car sales site, there are 33% more cars in the 80-100K miles category than cars in the 100K-infinity category. 1/3rd of 10 year old cars have done 33% less than average annual mileage.

So I don't trust mileage.

It's easy if you know you're looking for a certain car, but I'm not sure what it is I want. I'm looking for a certain engine configuration, price range, manual, driven wheels, petrol, and I prefer certain bodystyles and don't want an excessive distance.

I guess the number of filters is a tradeoff against search time. Each to their own.

Well fair enough, but i suspect that if you were looking (for instance) for a straight six engined, RWD convertible, between 20 & 25k, then you'd have a pretty good idea what would be in the results, and you're not going to be suddenly surprised by something you'd bever heard of before smile

I don't tend to use filters anyway, as I make specific searches on specific cars, so horses for courses, as you say.

Stuart! More filters please! biggrin

Don't forget that while you're limited to 6 filter [b]boxes[/] you're not limited to 6 filters. There are some which contain more than one filter criteria, even if they are grouped with others by the same theme. So:

Bodystyle (number of doors, bodystyle)
Performance (0-62 time, top speed)
Fuel (Fuel type, consumption)
Drivetrain (driven wheels, engine position)
Engine config (cyl number/layout, aspiration)

If you were to just have those 5 filter boxes active you'd have 10 different facets working, even if there is some overlap between them.

We did some work on all the possible combinations of search and it felt like 6, with these facets above having more than one facet contained within, covered almost every conceivable base. Ultimately though the data will determine if we deploy more. If it looks as if people are maxing out 6 searches constantly, then perhaps there's a case for more.

The other thing to consider is the impact of all of this on performance, and this will need to be a consideration. A few of the searches above combined with a complicated make/model selection (let's say 4 different all-makes and then 8 individual models, entirely possible) and you've got a tremendously complex set of facets against which to interrogate over 80,000 cars, particularly as we're insistent on that search result being delivered in <1 second.

When you think about it like that, you can see some of the complexities we've had to contend with in delivering this...

Would it be possible to expand the options within some filters?
For example under fuel, at present we can only select one, could it be extended for example to tick petrol + LPG?

Yes, that's absolutely what we're going to do. So those filters where you could conceivably want more than one choice from a list (but less than all, in which case you wouldn't need to use it at all) will get the same treatment as the colour filter, if you look at the way that this works.

We just haven't got to that stuff yet is all. There's an awful lot of under the bonnet stuff which isn't really visible which needed a lot more work first.

The new classifieds look great smile

A quick suggestion.. If you hit 'remove all' in the model selection, there is no intuitive way to get them all back without checking all the manufacturers in the list. I was pleased to see that you can type 'all' in the search-box and they return - but not everyone might think of that.

Perhaps another box to add them all back in?

Great job though! biggrin

You don't have to add them back in again. If no Makes/Models are checked then it assumes you want to search within all makes and models. So just hit the search button after filling in the criterion you wish to search for and you'll get the results returned from all Categories.

I can generate a list of cars but I can't view the actual adverts - I get all the other page features - menus, other car suggestions, oily pages etc but nothing for the advert itself (Firefox, mac).

You have adblock enabled. Either disable it, or add an exception for beta.pistonheads.com and you'll be fine.
