I've got Ad Aware 10 installed and the Shop and Bank Safely Online was causing thhe pictures not to display. I first got an error message when I clicked on your link Matt, but after I disabled the Shop and Bank Safely Online and refreshed the page it was fine, then I thought that could of caused the images not to display so I refreshed the classifeds and got pictures, so thanks Matt for that link. Phew! Presumably you can add an exception for our domain and still have those tools running?

You should be able to. I run adblock on a lot of sites, but not on PH and it does it without any problems. I run sentinel or some such thing for banking and that doesn't have any issues either.

It appears that Ad Aware have something called Bad Website Blocking, which blocks the pictures from the new classfieds but not the old classifieds. I've disabled that and enabled Shop and Bank Safely Online and the pictures are still showing.
I've also got Microsoft Security Essentals, so I'll leave the Bad Website Blocking disabled as all I can do is enable is and disable it. There doesn't appear to be anyway to allow websites to be on a trust list.

Quick question, I find it quite handy to browse by most recently added. On the old classifieds it seems that dealers relist their stock regularly which is a bit annoying as it's not really new. Have you solved this with the new classifieds?

Not a proper answer to your question, but when I asked if the new look classifieds would be filtering out ultra high/low prices or mileages Stuart said: Yes, that one too. There isn't an easy technological solution.
One thing we have done is change the default sort mode so that it now shows "newest with images" first. If you remember last time (and this is an issue on the current site) the search results are often dominated by dealer cars with no images attached, usually because the dealer wants to get the car up ASAP, and images follow a day or so later. Now we'll prioritise stuff with images by default, although you can override this if you want to see the very latest stuff. Hopefully this means things will be better?

They'll no doubt get around that by uploading a default dealer image until they have proper photos to upload?

There aren't huge changes to the logic, although that logic will perform better, so we shouldn't see any feed stock going straight to the top again. Fundamentally though there's nothing to stop a dealer from renewing their ad and having it appear at the top of the listings, but we'll clamp down on particularly bad offenders at this.
However by introducing better search what we hope is that we're less reliant on expecting people to plough through pages and pages of stock, particularly in some of the bigger categories. That should make finding cars better.

I think a notification service would work well. Put in your search criteria, save the search and get an email notification when something matches your criteria.

Phase 2 is finishing off the back end stuff - account management, ad upload etc, and the save/email alert is part of that. Where you see recent searches on the right hand side - that'll have a little email and save icon, so you can send the search to someone, or save it to create an email alert.

Is there a way us Trade advertisers can have a play with uploading adverts etc and see how user friendly it is? It went so horribly wrong the last couple of times, I'm very worried it'll happen again........ Has an email gone out to Trade advertisers advising of this Beta? It was mentioned before there was zero communication to dealer advertisers about upcoming classified 'improvements' It'd be good to know what to expect

This stage of the beta will automatically migrate your ads across from the old site to new, with any changes or additions being passed across every few hours or so. As Switch said, the next stage is to test all the back end stuff, and we'll be looking for a group of dealers to do this with. Want to help? Best, Stuart

I know this is an edge case for PH but searching for pre 1940 cars is a bit hit and miss. link. Selected from "pre 1940" and to "1940", (if you choose pre 1940 for both it says 59.987 results!) It seems about half of the results are a touch newer, and a huge amount of wanted ads! The first 37 results are modern cars.

The first 37 results are modern cars. Yes, it isn't great at present. The reason for this is that DVLA data gets less reliable the older the vehicle. However the older the vehicle, the less likely it is to come from a feed, and therefore we've got an opportunity to get correct data when a human being uploads the car. So when we work on the second phase of the beta (Ad upload and management) we'll do a lot of work on trying to make uploaders fill in as much detail as possible - checking what we're returning to make sure that it is correct, changing it if it isn't, and filling in the gaps. We think that this is possible because doing it is very much is in the interests of the seller, but we'll also make more categories compulsory to fill in than they are on the current site.

I'm not sure the old cars are the problem, it's more that there are loads of modern cars in there. For instance this 2010 VW Scirocco is listed. Once you get to the old stuff it works well, it's just polluted with the new fangled stuff. Is there any way of filtering out all of the wanted ads? If I try and enter -wanted it just returns ads with wanted in, it returns 114 out of a total of 217 for pre 1940 cars.

Filtering out wanted ads would be a great idea. I've noticed that when searching by power, a number of cars come up with the year down as their power (e.g., 1994 bhp): http://beta.pistonheads.com/classifieds?Category=u...but when you click on these cars, the power and year are both correct.

One of the things we need to do is improve the intelligence of the free text search so that it will allow you to do an OR search. At present it doesn't. I'll talk to the techs and see if we could also look at a NOT search. So for example you could search within Mercedes for "SL63 OR SL55 NOT wanted" - either of the first two, but exclude the third.
It will only ever be imprecise because if someone includes "I really wanted to keep this car but we've got a baby coming" in the description then it'd exclude it, but it should be pretty effective.
Incidentally wanted ads won't appear in searches in which you've used filters, because they don't have any facets (such as engine power or capacity) attached to them.
