We know exactly why adblock doesn't show our ads on the beta site and I can assure you we're doing nothing to fix it. Advertising is what keeps the lights on here.

Wrong attitude.

Hi All,

We've had a catch up on this in the office this morning and we'll make a fix to remove this problem with Firefox. Whilst Adblocker is a PITA for us, it certainly wasn't the intention to try and force people not to use it because of this, and we'd rather prioritise usability across all browsers, particularly the big ones like FF.

No idea on timing yet, but we'll update here when fixed.

Cheers,

Stuart

I was reminded of this old story:

Eisenhower had an appealing side to his character. As president of Columbia University, an honorary post which he nevertheless took seriously, he assumed responsibility for the day to day logistics of administration. Delighted at last to have a "leader" who knew how to get things done, the gardeners approached him one day with a long-standing complaint that the students were completely ignoring the "Keep off the grass" signs and had worn a diagonal path of bare earth across the campus green area. They asked the architect of Operation Torch and the D-Day landings how best to ensure that this could at last be stopped for once and for all. Eisenhower's response: "Pave the bloody path!"

In fairness, Matt wasn't the only person displaying 'wrong attitude' yesterday.

To be fair, in Matt's defense, his swiftly written comment probably reflected our collective attitude that, whilst we had many other jobs to do, fixing the website to help people using an adblocker wasn't a priority. Now that we've got through more and more of the jobs list, we can start attending to this stuff.

Certainly not the case that he has the wrong attitude or that this decision was one he made in isolation. We make decisions as a team, so I'm as to blame for not prioritising this sooner. Matt is a top bloke, as anyone who knows him will attest*.

*Well, he is American, but we can't all be perfect now, can we? wink

We could do with some help with this as we're struggling to replicate the issue right now. Would it be possible for anyone who has experienced the issue to just clarify which Adblocker programme they are using and also any particular settings where they've been able to observe the problem?

adblock plus in Firefox (14.0.1) prevents the ads showing correctly.

Also, I have no adblocker in Safari on my iphone, and beta classfieds doesn't work on that either (iOS 5)

  • edit* With Adblocker turned off (on Pistonheads only), it now works in Firefox, stumped on Safari though

John,

Thanks for this. Some more information if I may:

- Would you mind posting screengrabs of your desktop showing exactly how it doesn't show the ads correctly?

- On iPhone, are you saying that the beta site doesn't work, or that the classifieds on the mobile site don't work. Again, if the former I'd appreciate screen grabs if possible. If you don't want to post them, you can email them to me at stuart dot forrest at haymarket dot com.

Thanks,

Stuart

Despite rocketdogbert's help in sending screen grabs we're still, rather frustratingly, unable to replicate this.

So, if you are experiencing this issue I would be really grateful for as much as possible of the following:

- OS and Firefox version used.
- Any settings you're using over and above default. So if you've created a specific profile (as is possible in Adblock Plus) then please let us know what settings you've used.
- Any other factors which might be causing this, in particular anti-virus or other adblocking programmes.

We're really trying to get to the bottom of this, but a solution is impossible to test if we can't replicate it! Not trying to suggest for one moment that the problem doesn't exist though...

It's working for me now.

Adblock 2.1.2
Firefox 14.0.1
OSX 10.8

No antivirus, all standard profiles in adblock.

As in, you're not seeing the problem any more, or you are?

Correct - it wasn't working for me before (but <14 days), I'm afraid I can't pinpoint the date when it started working.

(Also, as I have a better computer now, I'm going to switch adblock off - it was the old one that didn't like lots of flashy adverts...)

OK, good to know that you aren't seeing it. We think it is a problem though. Anyone else still seeing it?
